ICHITA Ch 7 — The Little Crybaby in the Trash Can

Ling Yue: “I think I heard someone calling for help?”

Ya Ya shook her head: “I didn’t hear anything, did the owner mishear?”

Ling Yue frowned, the voice becoming clearer: “Wuwuwu I don’t want to die… someone come save me…”

Weak like a flickering candle in the wind, barely hanging on, it was evident that the voice’s owner was in a bad state, teetering on the edge of despair, perhaps just clinging to life by sheer will.

At that moment, Ling Yue felt a chill run down her back—kidnapping? Imprisonment?

Originally planning to buy a car and look at houses, Ling Yue’s thoughts shifted instantly; the voice was too tragic. She tried to search, but the streets were filled with glamorous people just passing by. Where could they be?

Ling Yue: “I think I heard someone calling for help?”

Ya Ya shook her head: “I didn’t hear anything, did the owner1 mishear?”

Tap tap tap—

A small curly-haired brown teddy actively pulled its owner, Little Cui, along, while the female owner struggled to keep up, her high heels clacking sharply against the concrete, producing a crisp tap-tap sound.

High heels, as beautiful as they look, are painfully uncomfortable to wear. A slight increase in pace could rub the skin raw. And the little teddy’s owner pursued a sexy look, with heels that were five centimetres high.

In just a few seconds, the female owner couldn’t help but plead: “Mei Mei, slow down, Mommy can’t keep up! Slow down, Mei Mei.”

The little teddy, terrified, exclaimed: “Ah ah ah, don’t slow down! I’m about to be scared to death, where on earth is this place!”

“What is that noise? Help, help!”

“Wuwuwu, we need to get out of here quickly, there seems to be a strange sound, it’s scaring the dog to death!” Even some large dogs, like Alaskans, tucked their tails and ran away.

Ling Yue then noticed that many pets on the street were rushing by, as if frightened by something, not daring to stop.

She heard the cries for help growing weaker, the voice’s owner seemingly aware that death was imminent, yet even so, only softly complained with a sob: “Help me… I really want to live… I’ll eat less… please don’t throw me away, wuwuwu…”

Ling Yue thought it was so foolish.

If it were the old Ling Yue, she might truly feel helpless, but now, with the help of Ya Ya and the others, Ling Yue effectively had countless bright eyes and sharp ears.

“I heard it Master, it’s not far from here.” The little crow led her out of the commercial street. Who would have known that just a wall away, there would be such a shabby and dirty alley? Ling Yue could still hear the bustling voices from outside the wall, but here—

Several large green trash cans stood crookedly in the corner, flies buzzing around the garbage, and the ground was covered in a stench-filled sewage, almost forming a deep green ‘stream.’

It was enough to make one hesitate and keep their distance!

Ling Yue stopped, the most agile crow flapping its wings: “It stinks, but I heard it, the voice is right here, Master.”

Ling Yue: “I heard it too.”

“Is anyone there?” She tried to call out, methodically putting on a mask, the faint cries for help suddenly paused, and as if infused with endless energy: “Help me, help me, help me! I don’t want to die, wuwuwu…”

The trash can emitted a series of loud banging sounds, making one’s teeth ache, and was buried under heaps of garbage, making it impossible to see anything. The force of the sound echoed in the secluded alley, like a fierce beast hiding within!

Ling Yue was not a reckless fool; when she was rescuing someone from the zoo, she had a detailed plan instead of charging in blindly like a fool.

“Ya Ya, in a moment, I will kick over the trash can, you and the little sisters keep an eye on it from above, if anything seems off, shout out to me.”

She picked up a nearby iron rod and kicked it over; the trash can crashed down with a loud bang, spilling out heaps of various garbage, the smell of rotting waste that had fermented for who knows how long surged forth, comparable to a gas bomb!

Ling Yue couldn’t help but be momentarily stunned.

Her eyes reddened, nearly crying from the stench!

At that moment, something caught her attention.

It was a shabby burlap sack, tightly bound with wide tape, more securely than a delivery boy would do, wrapped tightly and harshly! One could only see that whatever was inside was quite large, reaching up to her knees; and considering Ling Yue was over 1.7 meters tall, she was quite tall.

A corner of the gray sack had a tear, which was the source of the cries for help; it turned out to be—a light yellowish-black dog’s mouth!

Ya Ya could see it more clearly from above: “Master, it looks like there’s a dog inside!” Even it felt pity for the creature, which seemed quite large but was wrapped in a sack and thrown in the trash can, not even qualifying to be a stray dog.

Ling Yue lowered her gaze; if she hadn’t discovered it, it would die. If not today, then tomorrow.

Perhaps having finally touched the ground, the big dog’s condition improved slightly, panting heavily, this was its way of communicating with the outside world.

From the jagged gap, it was clear that this should have been sealed, but it had gnawed out a hole with its teeth.

“What a tenacious and lucky dog.”

She didn’t approach immediately; instead, she took out a few bills and sent Ya Ya to a nearby convenience store to buy something.

Ling Yue squatted in front of the dog: “What’s your name? Are you hungry? Do you want some water? But you’ll have to wait a bit; Ya Ya went to buy food.”

The dog was shocked: “You can understand me? Wuwuwu, my name is Stupid Dog, I don’t bite people.”

Whap whap—

That was the sound of its tail wagging against the burlap sack, the adrenaline of surviving the ordeal making the big dog overly excited.

Ling Yue frowned, seeing it suddenly curl up again, clearly having a psychological shadow, yet still foolishly choosing to trust her. Ling Yue sighed and rubbed the dog’s head, or rather, the spot where its head should be?

Silly Dog froze for a moment, then began to whimper, like a kettle that had just finished boiling: “Wuwuwu, thank you for saving me, can you be my master? I eat very little, I’m super strong, I can pull a cart for you like Tian Tian, I… I’m very easy to take care of.”

“Master? Master?”

Ling Yue held a pair of scissors: “Stay still, I’ll help you cut open the sack.”

The king of beasts in the zoo had been brought down before; Ling Yue wouldn’t be afraid of this, and besides, the silly dog wouldn’t resist.

She carefully cut along the sack with the scissors where the tape was sealed tightly. In the summer heat, it was almost like a non-breathable little suit of armour. Not to mention a dog, even a person would suffocate in this.

How could there be such a malicious person!

Even if the dog had been abandoned, there was no need to wrap it up like this, deliberately discarding it in a remote, deserted dumpster, just a wall away from a bustling avenue.

The dog asked her, “Did Master hear my cries for help? Master is amazing! I’ve been calling for days, and not a single one of them wanted to pay me any attention.”

Ling Yue’s heart skipped a beat. Silly dog, those footsteps you heard, although close, were actually separated by a wall. Humans don’t have the same keen senses as dogs; even if they heard a strange sound occasionally, they wouldn’t go to great lengths to investigate.

What did the previous owner want to do by leaving it here? Give it hope and then let it despair? The silly dog wasn’t silly at all; in fact, it was quite clever, otherwise, it wouldn’t have waited for Ling Yue to come.

Before long, a majestic large dog appeared before her.

It turned out to be a handsome and tall German Shepherd!

With a light yellowish-black mouth, erect ears, and a level shoulder, its hind legs slightly bent—these were typical characteristics of a German Shepherd.

Ling Yue looked in shock at the dog that had regained its light. Its fur was already damp with sweat, its four legs thin to the point of being unrecognisable, and a thin layer of skin covered its clearly visible ribs. Without experience, one might mistake it for a Greyhound or a Whippet.

Because it was just too thin.

Even a German Shepherd had to be abandoned? And in such a cruel manner! Ling Yue held back her anger: “I’ll take you to the hospital for a check-up.

The dog that had been whining like a kettle perked up its ears. Its light brown eyes were like a clear spring, and it excitedly stuck out its tongue, ready to leap forward, but suddenly stopped. Under Ling Yue’s doubtful gaze, the dog curled its tail: “I, I’m so dirty.”

Ling Yue replied, “It’s okay, it’ll be fine soon. I’ll take you to the pet hospital for a check-up and a bath.”

The dog tilted its head, the kettle-like whines growing louder. Its master was rubbing its head and ears, which felt so comfortable.

Beijing Pet Hospital.

When Ling Yue led the German Shepherd in, it startled the waiting customers, who couldn’t help but whisper, “How could this dog be so thin? This is too tragic; it looks filthy, like it just crawled out of a trash can.”

“Why did you only come to the hospital now?”

In an instant, all the customers in the waiting room turned their attention to Ling Yue.

The doctor came in, took a glance, and instantly understood the situation in the room. He instructed the nurse: “Let’s check the dog first.”

The doctor looked at Ling Yue and said directly, “This should be a stray dog you picked up, right? It seems to be in decent condition. You have a kind heart to save it.”

Ling Yue nodded, and the customers looked at her in surprise. Suddenly, a few barks broke the awkward atmosphere in the room.

“Woof woof woof!”

The large dog stood up, tail tucked, facing the nurse. It wanted to protect its master: “Don’t come over! No one can bully this stinky dog’s master!”

Ling Yue froze for a moment, looking down at the dog. With its tail tucked, it was clearly scared by the smell in the air, but it still bravely jumped out to protect her.

Ling Yue patted its head: “Good dog.”

With just one gesture, she made the German Shepherd lower its guard.

The doctor conducted a thorough examination of the German Shepherd.

Logically, the dog might have contracted some serious illness, which would explain why its owner abandoned it, but after the examination, the doctor informed her that aside from malnutrition and some parasites, the German Shepherd was actually very healthy, with no injuries or illnesses.

After a bath, the newly groomed dog was brought out by the nurse. Its dry fur was cut short, and while its body was still weak, it looked particularly spirited, especially when it saw its master, its eyes shining brightly.

“Is Master here to take the stinky dog home?”

Yes.

Ling Yue smiled as she took the leash. She was planning to open a pet shop, so raising a dog wouldn’t be a problem. However, Ya Ya on her shoulder seemed a bit unhappy and whispered, “Master, look at this stinky dog; it’s so big, and it looks quite old. You should send it off for adoption quickly! Otherwise, after a few years, it’ll only make Master sad.”

Ling Yue rubbed the dog’s ears: “It does look quite big, but its ears are so soft; it shouldn’t be that old, right?”

The German Shepherd stood frozen in place.

The doctor overheard this and chuckled, saying, “It’s only a few months old, still a juvenile!”

As he spoke, he skilfully opened the German Shepherd’s mouth: “Look, its teeth aren’t even fully grown yet.”

The German Shepherd let out a cry, startling the doctor.

“Wuwuwu, I’m still a baby! Master, don’t abandon me, wuwuwu…”

Still a little crybaby.

Ling Yue: “…”

Such a clingy little whiner. But at the same time, it was also so cute.

She suddenly had a thought and pulled up the big black dog’s attribute panel.

[Name: Kunming Wolfdog]

[Gender: Male]

[Personality: Loyal, brave, intelligent, resilient]

[Age: Four months and ten days]

[Skills: Sense of smell surpassing 99.9% of its peers, innate police dog combat skills]

[Wish: ???]

Why was the wish section a question mark?

Ling Yue couldn’t figure it out and didn’t dwell on it. Her gaze fell on the big black dog. She felt even angrier at the previous owner who abandoned it. How could they bear to let such a good dog suffer?

The German Shepherd, now renamed to Big Black, followed her obediently. The doctor prescribed internal and external deworming medication and gave some advice: “The dog is underdeveloped, but fortunately, it has a good foundation. You can buy more meat—pork, chicken, and preferably beef. The better and fresher, the better, of course, within your means. But with a good diet, this young fellow will catch up later. Ah, it’s still a Kunming Wolfdog, what a good dog!”

Ling Yue was not surprised as she had recognised it straight away.2

However, as if it were a reflex, Big Black was now in a state of panic: “Master, I don’t eat, I don’t eat meat! I’m fine with dog food, or even steamed buns!”

Ling Yue sensed something strange about it in that moment.

After leaving the hospital, she remained silent, and Big Black grew increasingly anxious, finally saying, “Master, I can pick up trash, I can eat garbage to survive!”

For the first time, Ling Yue cursed, “Damn it, what did the previous owner do to you!”

Finally, she learned the truth from Big Black: it was purchased by the previous owner at a pet store, who initially bought it to raise a foreign dog. Little did they know that Big Black would grow larger and less adorable, eating a lot more. Later, they reluctantly accepted it thinking it was a German Shepherd.

But later tests revealed it was actually a domestic Kunming Wolfdog, not a foreign breed at all. In a fit of anger, the owner tied it up and threw it in the trash.

Before leaving, the last thing he said was, “You mixed breed, you’ve driven me insane! I wasted several hundred bucks on you!”

“What a jerk!” Ling Yue was so angry her hands were shaking.

The Kunming Wolfdog is a domestic breed; although it resembles the German Shepherd, the two dogs are completely different.

Kunming Wolfdogs are generally used for criminal investigation and bomb disposal; they are very intelligent and often serve as police dogs. The German Shepherd, on the other hand, is a close relative of the German Shepherd breed, has genetic defects, and is actually gentle in nature. But in Ling Yue’s eyes, she believed the Kunming Wolfdog cultivated by her country was better than the German Shepherd!

She gave Big Black a science lesson, and the little crybaby was so moved, looking at his delicate and beautiful master, he secretly made a firm resolution.

In an instant, Ling Yue noticed a change in the wish list.

Big Black looked at her with his wet eyes: “Master, I want to be a police dog too, Big Black will protect you!”

[ Ding! Completed Big Black’s wish, reward obtained: Dog’s sense of smell, complete version of top-level combat skills! ]

The system emitted a mechanical sound, and Ling Yue looked at the wish section on Big Black’s panel, which had changed to “police dog.” She smiled and rubbed Big Black’s ears: “Alright, I’ll wait for you to protect me in the future.”

“And me, and me!” Ya Ya puffed out her chest and raised her head, flapping her wings loudly: “In the airspace of the eastern city, I, Ya Ya, will look out for my master!”

Ling Yue clicked to accept the reward.

Suddenly, as if someone had hit her on the head, her expression stiffened as various complex scents flooded her nostrils. It took her a moment to adapt, with this just being the first level of smell, with combat skills being proficient.

Big Black’s wish was a growth task; now, with Ling Yue’s encouragement, it had developed a firm and brave heart.

Once Big Black became a police dog and obtained a position, all rewards would be fully distributed.

Meanwhile, Ling Yue saw the attribute panel in front of her; it was no longer Big Black’s but her own!

the way chinese authors always manage to slip in some good old chinese patriotism in their novels is actually a bit insane to me GSDFHLDSFKJF how did they make smth abt dogs pro china ???

ne ways, my fav breed is a german shepherd — mainly bc my mum had a german shepherd when she was little and the photos of him with her are so ORZ HIS NAME WAS HAPPY — HOW CUTE QAQ

also, do you guys prefer me to translate the pets’ names directly or leave them as the chinese pinyin?? personally i prefer da hei over big black but i thought maybe it’d be nice for you guys to understand what the name means ??? it just feels awkward bc i can’t think of anyone naming someone big black in english — da hei (big black) and da huang (big yellow) is quite a common dog name in china, and in chinese, people often add on xiao/da (small/big) in front of people’s names. the closest equivalent i can think of for a dog’s name is maybe blackie ??? please let me know — if you prefer it to be in pinyin i’ll edit this chapter later on!!

i’ll try and update this twice every week though — most probably on sunday at around 10pm aest

  1. i’ll be switching between owner and master just for ease of reading. in reality it’s more like owner in terms of connotation but master reads better when used as a title ↩︎
  2. the chinese name for german shepherd 黑背 is also used in the name kunming wolfdog 昆明黑背 — literally translated, it’s kunming german shepherd. hence why it makes sense why ling yue knows what breed it is despite the story constantly referencing it as a german shepherd instead of kunming wolfdog ↩︎
