IBSGAD Ch 1 — Five Year Old Child Bride

The Ether Dukedom.

If the family protecting the northern part of the continent was the imperial family, then they were the guardians of the southern gate, responsible for blocking the sea of fog.

A place where fog with strange powers creates all sorts of strange things.

A place where bizarre monsters that can’t be seen on the mainland run wild through the thick fog which blocks all vision and leaves you unable to see even an inch ahead of you.

The man who blocked such monsters and protected the South.

It became widely known that Duke Ether, who could even relentlessly cut down the monsters who came to him in human form, had a coldness that was unlike a human’s, and thus his notoriety spread as well as his influence.

Then, he was put in check by the imperial family.

The Emperor requested for the Duke of Ether to be summoned to the north.

We1 are well aware of the pain of being swayed by a maternal family.”

In short, it meant that he should marry a young lady who came from a powerless family.

Duke Ether was originally a man who had no dreams of a married life.

As the head of the Ether Duchy who was called the ‘House of Sea Guardians’ and guarded the border between the sea of fog and the land, the time he spent on a boat and on the battlefield was more than that which he spent with women.

“I’ll do as you say.”

The Duke of Ether didn’t think it would matter who came as his bride. After all, he wasn’t going to be able to enjoy a married life anyways. No, rather, he thought it’d be fortunate if the bride didn’t end up choking on the chilly and humid air or running away.

Thus, he accepted the Lebouire Barony’s marriage request.

‘Nothing much will change.’

There would just be one more person staying in the mansion. That’s what he had thought.

A few days later, Baron Lebouire’s shabby carriage arrived at the Ether estate. The carriage, which had passed through the foggy forest, was in poor condition with dirt everywhere.

“Hello.”

Nothing would change… Or so he had thought.

However, the moment he saw the bride’s face, the cold face of Duke Ether cracked.

The Lebouire Barony’s young lady, was in fact, a little girl of five years old.

A shabby ceiling appeared. I had never in my previous life slept in a shabby place like this.

“…”

When I opened my eyes in a different world, I had stubbornly thought that that sort of bullshit wasn’t part of my story.

But that sort of thing really happened. I was screaming until the last moment.

[Layton, how could you…!]

I shouted like that until I fell into the lava. A scorching heat enveloped my body, and I lost consciousness. When I opened my eyes, I found myself in this state.

“…”

Exactly 5 years have passed since I’ve found myself in this state.

“Ah seriously, this is ridiculous.”

As soon as I opened my eyes, the first sound that had come out of me was “Wahhh!”.

It wasn’t like the regretful voice of my previous life, when I yelled, ‘Layton, you corrupt fucker, the next time I meet a bastard like you in my next life, I’ll make sure to give him a hearty beating to the back of the head!’.

At first, I thought it was a dream.

A year passed by while I felt emotional about being unaware of the fact that I liked him so much.

And then the me who could only cry, was finally able to move about freely and crawl around the cramped room.

By then, I had no choice but to admit it.

I had reincarnated.

Furthermore, the family I had been born into was a noble family. It was different from my previous life, where I was born as a commoner who couldn’t even enter the wizarding academy and had to study on my own to become an archmage.

Oh, a golden spoon, how nice!

That’s what I had thought, but somehow, my life just doesn’t want to turn out properly.

My previous life had been one that had started poorly and ended in betrayal. Then, would this life be better since I was born in a better place?

“Cough!”

The cough that burst out countless times a day and had the taste of blood. The problem wasn’t with the throat or the lungs.

The heart, this brat’s heart was the problem.

Although I had reincarnated into a completely different body, from head to toe, strangely enough, I had been born with the mana from my previous life surrounding my heart.

Wow! I’ve been reborn as an archmage!?

However, as much as I liked it, the body of a child was still too weak to handle my mana as an archmage. In addition to that, there were unfortunately no doctors who were knowledgeable on mana near where I was born.

“This disease… cannot be cured until she’s taken to Allehara Palace.”

The doctor who looked at my body said so.

Although I wasn’t sure whether he had said Allehara or Aloha, if ‘palace’ was attached onto the back of it, it probably referred to the doctors that belonged to the imperial family.

In short, it was something that generally couldn’t be cured.

“Although you won’t die straight away if you make a decoction with the Sillia herb… if you continue to grow weakly like this, your heart won’t be able to beat properly and you’ll die.”

The doctor declared it as an incurable disease with a nonchalant expression. At first, my parents, the Baron and Baroness of Lebouire, tried to find the medicinal herb in question.

“What? Why are medicinal herbs so expensive?”

But after seeing the price, they gave up coolly.

The grass, which was said to only grow on certain areas bordering the sea, was too expensive for a baron to bear.

“Money devouring bitch!”

“To be born so weak…!”

Since then, my treatment within the Barony has degenerated from the master’s precious half-daughter to a nuisance.

As a matter of fact, the Baroness merely regarded me as a thorn in her eyes, since she never liked my biological mother, who was a maid who died giving birth to me, either.

Knowing that I would be consuming a wad of money just in time, she drove me to pretend to be sick in order to get attention, even if I wasn’t sick.

As if that wasn’t enough, she’d even slap me on the cheek in front of the servants.

—Slap!

“Can you not even go into your room immediately?”

After being diagnosed with the disease, the Baroness hated me for even wanting to come out, afraid that she’d get infected.

Several years passed, just like that. Without the herbs, the mana gradually swallowed my heart.

“Cough, cough!”

That day, I was gasping for breath from the dry cough that had burst out as well. Whenever I coughed, my heart seemed to be squeezed in a vice grip.

Although it would’ve been nice if I was able to release this mana, it was obvious to me that if I attempted to use up my mana in this state, I’d merely end up collapsed and rolling on the floor in pain.

Magic can only be used when you’re in good condition.

—Bang!

“Nassia!”

One day, when I had been passing the day just like so, Baroness Lebouire broke into my room without any prior notice.

“Cough!”

I jumped in surprise and coughed again. The taste of blood in my mouth was bitter. Of course, there was not even a single maid to help me.

“So disgusting…”

The sound of the Baroness’ muttering pierced my ears.

This bastard’s house, I need to get out of here, quickly!

It was at that moment, when I had decided to definitely do one of the two, to get out by dying from my weak body, or miraculously becoming healthy and using magic to escape.

“Change into this outfit immediately.”

A bundle of white clothes flew in front of me, who was still sitting, suffering from sickness. The clothes I had managed to pick up were somehow too bulky and big for a five year old child.

“…?”

When I unfurled the clothes, I couldn’t help but be flustered. The clothes which I had never worn in my previous life, despite enjoying almost all the wealth and fame that came with being an archmage.

“…A wedding dress?”

There was also a foul item, made just the right size for a child to wear.

She was using her whole body to show that the object with a jewel attached to it was not a toy.

“Put it on, and that hand!”

The Baroness looked at my hand and was horrified. The hand that had covered my mouth while I was red.

As if she was afraid of getting infected, she said without reaching out towards me.

“Wash your hands and put it on! I’ll get stains on my clothes.”

I guess the reason you came here wasn’t to suddenly give me clothes you’d think I’d like.

Ever since I was reincarnated as Nassia de Lebouire and turned five, I realized that talking to the Baroness would merely get me a slap in the face.

But I had no choice but to ask.

“Why these clothes…?”

An unintentionally cracked voice came out. The Baroness replied casually.

“You’ll be a bride, starting from today.”

“What?”

Bride? What bride?

“You’ll become the bride of Duke Ether.”

What did you say? A five year old bride?

[ / / / ]

Rather than believing I had reincarnated, it still seemed more like a silly dream, if anything.

I had also heard of the Ether Dukedom, who acted as the guardian of the southern coast.

The Duke, who seemed to have abandoned his humanity in order to stop all kinds of strange monsters from crossing the sea of fog, was clearly a man who proved the saying, ‘to catch a monster, one must first become a monster’.

The story of all outsiders who entered the Duchy at a certain time being beheaded at the Duke’s orders in order to kill all the monsters who came from beyond the sea in human form, was particularly famous.

To the extent that even I, who was confined in the house and couldn’t even have a simple conversation, had heard of it.

But on top of that, I never thought that he’d be on a whole other level of trashy scumbag, to even welcome a five year old bride!

—Rattle!

The carriage I rode on shook violently.

The complexion which had been pale from suffering from an illness for a long time now had a red flush tinged on it.

And seriously, the child-like hands were covered with a bride’s white gloves, a white veil covering the small head of pink hair.

And the round eyes were a vivid brown.

Like cherry blossoms.

“…”

My reflection on the transparent part of the carriage wall was tragically cute.

My cheeks, which were hidden under the pure white veil, were still chubby, not able to shake off the feeling of a child.

Below her blushing young cheeks, a wedding dress made of fluttering lace came down to her knees.

Sitting on the chair in the carriage, her feet, which couldn’t even touch the floor, were suspended in the air and extended all the way in front. The carriage chair, which was made for adults, became a floor for her, who was able to sit with legs stretched out and her butt all the way on the inside.

The ankle parts of the white socks were once again, laced with pretty pink lace. Beneath them were black shoes.

“Hmm…”

When I wriggled my toes, the round point of the black shoe would also move. I popped my foot, the round, black shoe nose moved. The bouquet in my hand was just ridiculously excessive.

“Ah, how can I be this cute?”

I’m cute, but what’s the use of being cute…

It would have been great if the situation had been where a young child was just playing around with a pretend wedding dress whilst receiving affection and love.

Unfortunately, however, I was being transported to the mansion of a scumbag with a supposed personality failure, who was going to marry a five year old.

“We’ll arrive at the mansion soon.”

Knock knock!

The sound of knocking on the carriage was heard, along with a man’s voice. It was the voice of one of Baron Lebouire’s knights.

“If you go in and start spouting nonsense, your neck will be the first to fall off!”

A voice full of phlegm threatened me. It was confusing to the extent of wondering whether he was bringing a family’s young lady or a slave.

If I could’ve used magic, that kind of bastard’s head would’ve already been blasted off and blown away.

I had the impression of my heart tightening and the mana within my heart increasing.

—Rattle!

After a while, the floor shook again.

Just like a bride’s carriage, the outside wasn’t able to be seen properly from within the carriage with the blinds down.

Instead, all I could hear was people swearing and saying that they couldn’t see anything around them.

I wondered how much longer it’d last for.

“Here’s the promised amount.”

Those words entered my ears as I was about to fall asleep. The unfamiliar man’s voice was different from that of the Baron’s knights.

Have we arrived?

It’s been a long time since the carriage has come to a stop.

Soon, the sound of the nearby knights moving away was heard. There was only one answer, since the Baroness wouldn’t have married me off to a family without money.

“So I was sold off.”

A chuckle slipped out.

I knew that Duke Ether was looking for someone to marry.

Of course, since I was only five years old, I just wondered how brutal and inhumane the Duke would be in his search for a bride, but I had thought that it was someone else’s business.

[It doesn’t matter who it is.]

The terms for marriage were unconventional. As long as he could get married, he was able to get married to anyone. It didn’t matter who the bride was.

It was almost as if Duke Ether was buying a bride.

‘Even so, how can I get to the Ether estate though?’

‘It’s no different from wasting your life, since you’ll be near the sea of fog.’

Rumors circulated all the households.

Although they didn’t know who the young lady marrying Duke Ether was, the demon who knew nothing but war, they all felt sorry for her.

But, tada! The bride was only five years old!

I laughed out loud due to the ridiculousness of it all.

In my previous life, I was an archmage who could even pose a threat to dragons, yet now I was just a child who was crushed by her own mana and had contracted an incurable disease.

“I can’t believe I’ll end up marrying some bastard who readily accepts a five year old bride.”

It’d be a relief if you just turned out to be a war fanatic. All sorts of terrible thoughts ran through my mind.

It was then.

“Bride, welcome to Ether.”

I heard a voice from outside. It was probably the voice of someone who belonged to the Duchy.

“Bride, you say…”

I snorted and put my arm on the chair.

Since I was a child, I had to jump off the chair with my short legs.

However, this needlessly cute wedding dress interfered with my freedom of movement.

“Bride?”

I heard a voice from outside again.

Well, if you know I’m five, can you at least help me? Are you telling me to come out on my own?

—Click!

Because of my small body, I had to push the door open with my whole body.

As soon as I opened the door, I saw a huge blue mansion.

And in front of it, a man in a black uniform who was wearing white gloves, was preparing to serve the bride.

The first thing I saw was the neatly arranged bright blond hair.

Dark blue eyes turned towards me in the carriage.

Oh, so this is the trashy scumbag, Duke Ether, who said he was going to marry a five year old?

My own curious eyes met the trash’s eyes.

DILFFFFF YESSSSS LET’S GOOOOOOOOO #nassiaprotectionsquad

“…”

“…”

It was silent for a moment, before the Duke’s face contorted.

“A child?”

Oho?

The Duke also seemed flustered.

He strode up to the carriage.

Duke Ether, who had his back against the sun, somewhere in the misty sky, was so tall that I had to raise my head to look at him.

The shadow cast by his tall stature completely covered me.

At the same time, a knight of Baron Lebouire greeted him.

“I’ve brought the bride.”

“…What did you say?”

The Duke looked inside the carriage again. Of course, I was the only one in the carriage.

What the hell, you didn’t even know how old your bride was?

“You don’t mean to say that this child is Ether’s bride.”

A cold air emanated from him.

RMHM Ch 10 — A Man With Strength So Overwhelming It Makes You Unable to Budge

I couldn’t even sleep a wink at night.

That’s right, I was nervous.

Although I had already made my debut, at that time however, I had a chaperone as well as my father and brother resolutely supporting and guarding my back. But now…

“D-Do I really have to go?”

“…”

“…Right, I should go.”

There was only Count Acacia, who was on the brink of death.

Since the majority of the immediate royal family was going to participate, I couldn’t go alone without a partner to such a big party.

Many other young ladies will also be making their debut here today.

Although it was an unspoken requirement to have a dashing gentleman escort you to the party, that was something I couldn’t choose.

I wore the most inconspicuous green dress Blair had ordered.

Of course it didn’t match the debutante dress I would’ve normally imagined myself wearing since it had been chosen from among the many dresses which were ‘ordered by Blair’.

The back was cut deeply, as if there was no fabric, and the front was no better, so Yona had to sew it up using the trimmings from other dresses all night long.

If Marge hadn’t been able to find a suitable shawl early in the morning, I would’ve been dressed according to an evening party despite going to a debutante.

My face was also made up in a way I never would’ve in the past.

Although I had asked them not to do it too poorly, the maids, who were excited for their mistress’ first debutante, dressed me up extremely well.

The only thing that bothered me slightly was the makeup that seemed too heavy according to my standards, since I had asked them to do my makeup ‘like it was before’.

Blair seemed to have thought that her charm was her sensuality.

The alluring effect she had was one that was similar to those actresses that belonged to a theatre company who often appeared on the cover of the gossip tabloids or magazine covers.

It was a look that I would’ve never done on my original body, but it suited Blair when she ‘did what she used to’.

With this get up, even if they saw this figure, even those who knew Adrienne’s face to some extent wouldn’t be able to think of Adrienne at once.

It’s the perfect way to break free from some of those prestigious nobles who might recognise me and sneak up on Novian.

As soon as I got onto the carriage, Marge, Yona, and a few other maids clenched their fists and cheered me on.

Even the old butler’s eyes were shining as he stood from a distance away.

The warm reception was different to when I first met them.

Despite the fact that I found myself unable to break free from the memories of my past, they continued to approach me, as if they were crossing the line, however, through their care of me, little by little, I gradually started to feel as if I was their mistress.

‘I think the biggest reason was probably because I was invited to the victory ceremony and brought ‘honour to the family’.’

I waved to them lightly. Yona liked it and jumped up and down.

For some reason, I felt a strange, soft and mushy feeling in my heart.

I waved to them lightly. Yona liked it and jumped up and down.

For some reason, I felt a strange, soft and mushy feeling in my heart.

As I looked at them getting further and further away in the window, I heard the sound of Count Acacia taking a breath and sighing deeply as he looked at me.

When the carriage passed through the capital’s central square and reached the entrance of the imperial palace, where it began to get congested, the volume of that sigh reached its peak.

Furthermore, his face grew paler and paler the closer he got to the palace.

“I, Countess. If I happen to fall… Please don’t worry about me and go have fun.”

“…Pardon?”

Hoo, hoo, hoo-!

After taking several short breaths, Count Acacia took out a small cylindrical tin case from his breast pocket and poured it into his mouth.

Smelling that pungent scent, it seemed like a drug that relieves tension.

Since it was something I had tried when I had small seizures, it was something I was extremely familiar with.

“Are you nervous?”

“What are you saying…!”

Count Acacia’s resentful amber eyes turned to me.

I was no longer nervous or polite in front of him since he never once treated me like his wife.

“Lord God, all glory goes to you…may all our sins be forgiven through the sacrifice of your Lamb…”

Suddenly, he began to recite a series of Lord’s prayers. He must be extremely religious.

I sat up straight and watched Count Acacia’s aging hands clasped together as he recited prayers.

“Since you’re already married, even if you don’t have a chaperone, everyone will understand.”

“I know.”

I just said that I knew, yet your expression whilst looking at me seemed to ask how I could possibly know.

I guess if it was Blair, she wouldn’t have known.

I just shrugged my exposed shoulders.

The victory ceremony was held quite grandly, with carriages lined up from the entrance.

After waiting for a while, we finally stepped into the entrance.

Although Blair herself wasn’t very tall, Count Acacia however, was quite short, and now that I had donned high heels, we were now around the same height.

The servant at the entrance of the party who rang the bell to announce who entered glanced at us with a very strange expression.

After the coachman handed over the invitation, the servant alternated between the guest list and our invitation for a while before ringing the bell and announcing us reluctantly.

“Announcing the Count Acacia couple!”

As expected, the party hall was boisterous and noisy with no one paying attention to the announcement of the Count Acacia couple.

When I had attended a few parties with Novian before my health deteriorated, it had been quiet when we showed up since everyone was paying attention to us.

Compared to that time, however, the occasional glances I could feel that were directed at me were of less interest than that which was directed at the champagne the servants were carrying.

We stood close to the wall, away from other people’s attention.

All the while, Count Acacia’s arm which I was holding continued to tremble.

The anxiety that had barely subsided within me was slowly increasing again because of the Count, and at this rate, I was bound to become as stressed as him.

“…Calm down, Count.”

“T-The Grand Duke doesn’t seem to have arrived yet.”

I tried to calm him down quietly from behind the fan, but the Count, who was far from calming down, suddenly startled himself when the word ‘Grand Duke’ came out of his mouth, and abruptly shut up.

It was approximately when he was trembling pitifully.

Ding-! Ding-! Ding-!

The arrogant attendant that had been at the party entrance rang the bell three times.

The people who had been sitting down on the chairs for a while suddenly jumped to their feet, and those who had been giggling along with them as friends suddenly shut their mouths, looking up at the stairway at the distant entrance.

“Announcing Your Majesties, the Emperor and Empress, masters of the Great Empire of Ronta! Announcing Your Highnesses, the Crown Prince and Crown Princess, hope of the Empire! Lastly, announcing Your Highness the Second Prince, who accumulated honour by subjugating the rebels of the west and showed them the Empire’s might!”

Applause broke out once the aging Emperor and the young Empress who had just been crowned, entered at the same time.

The applause, which continued for the Crown Prince and his wife, reached its climax when the Second Prince, Roadnez appeared.

“Ah-! It’s my first time seeing His Highness, the Second Prince!”

“Me too. Wow… How is it possible for him to look as finely carved as a sculpture? By the way, his eyes…?”

“Shh! Be quiet!”

Amidst the chattering voices of the young ladies, I looked up at the man who showed an overwhelming presence with my eyes wide open.

When his gaze, which seemed as if he was looking for someone, skimmed through the entire hall, I hid behind Count Acacia and covered my face unconsciously with my fan.

Badump! Badump! Badump! Badump!

My heart, which had already been filled with anxiety, suddenly started to beat like crazy.

It was my first time seeing the Second Prince, Roadnez, whose name was famous and held in high regard, in the flesh.

And the problem with the Second Prince was that…

‘Crazy.’

He was the very man who had cried in front of my tombstone not too long ago, as if the whole world had caved in!

I glanced over Count Acacia’s shoulder and pulled my eyes away.

Roadnez was by far the most exceptional figure amongst the glittering royal family.

Although the Crown Prince was also attractive, his beauty went beyond the bounds of what it meant to be ‘beautiful’.

With shining platinum blond hair, bright red eyes that flashed like a wild beast and melted languidly, an arrogant expression and sensual lips, he was the very image of what he was often called, a man of pleasure.

There’s no mistaking it.

The man I saw in the graveyard was obviously him.

“Then, I hope today we’ll be able to celebrate the joy of victory and enjoy it to the fullest!”

After giving his warm welcome, the Emperor patted Roadnez on the shoulder and congratulated him, raising a glass of champagne and toasting.

Everyone gathered in the hall also toasted in unison.

“Glory to God! Prosperity in Ronta! Loyalty to the Emperor!”

“Glory to God! Prosperity in Ronta! Loyalty to the Emperor!”

A round of applause erupted once again. Everyone laughed with champagne in their mouths.

The Emperor and Empress, who looked at the crowd below happily, nodded slightly before going up the stairs to sit at their designated seats.

As the band situated at the bottom of the stairs started to tune their instruments in unison, people made space and cleared out the centre of the hall, as if they were waiting for something.

The Second Prince, Roadnez, who was the main character of the victory ceremony, along with the Crown Prince and his wife, descended down the stairs to the main hall.

Soft squeals poured out from wherever Roadnez’s line of sight happened to linger on.

“!”

I grabbed onto Count Acacia’s arm, trembling unconsciously.

Those bright red eyes looked straight at me!

When our eyes met, I felt as if I had merely become prey in front of a wild beast.

The arrogant and cold expression on Roadnez’s face cracked slightly.

‘No way, no way! Don’t come over here!’

At this point, I couldn’t tell if it was me or the Count who was trembling.

Although the things we were afraid of were different, we shared the same feeling.

I had barely managed to obscure my face which had turned deathly pale behind my fan and hidden behind Count Acacia, who was already shaking like an aspen tree, before people suddenly began to chatter noisily.

Roadnez, who had clearly seen my face, casually looked down at a young girl who had approached him and asked for a dance.

Even though his face was excessively stiff, the blonde girl grabbed his hand, the tips of her ears red as she walked to the centre of the hall.

When the band started playing, the Crown Prince couple as well as the Second Prince’s pair both started to dance in unison.

“Haa-.”

That was a close call. Contrary to my worries, he didn’t seem to recognise me.

Anyhow, the person in the graveyard at that time was the mysterious Second Prince, Roadnez…

As the waltz’s melody reached its climax, I secretly pulled my eyes away and turned my gaze towards the centre of the hall.

Although the girl stumbled occasionally, Roadnez really danced to the music perfectly.

The young ladies around me let out a deep sigh whenever his hand touched the girl’s waist or shoulder.

“Ughhh-.”

And beside me was Count Acacia, who wiped away his cold sweat with a strange moan.

We also had to go out to dance soon.

After the first dance of the hosts, the party’s rule is for the guests to immediately pour into the hall and dance with their partners.

“Is everything okay?”

After I calmed down, I turned my attention to the Count.

“Ah… I’m, I’m sorry.”

The Count had a genuinely apologetic expression.

The first dance was already over.

Perhaps it was because the Count had barely finished wiping off his cold sweat after being hit by the waves of nobles rushing onto the dance floor, like a flood.

“T-The Grand Duke…”

Count Acacia, who had raised his head to some point, eventually…

“Kyaaaa-!”

“Sir!”

“Count!”

In a small voice that only I could hear, he begged, ‘Save me, save me…’, and collapsed.

The second dance’s song was fast and extremely grand, so the commotion only caused a small disturbance on the side.

I quickly tried to help Count Acacia up, but he just sat down, slumped against the wall and unable to get up.

No one willing stepped forward to interfere, so only after hearing commotion from the shallow screams from the elderly noblewomen, a night came and laid the count down.

Shortly thereafter, several knights who came with him carried the Count off to the common room.

Although I should’ve followed them, I had completely come to a stop and couldn’t do anything.

“…!”

In the midst of the crowd, someone from behind crossed my arms and held me lightly with one hand.

My shawl fell off, goosebumps erupting in an instant as my bare back was revealed.

Although it wasn’t painful, the strength of the man was so overwhelming that I couldn’t even budge.

I was so startled that I couldn’t even scream and stiffened.

RMHM Ch 9 — A Dangerous Invitation? A Family’s Honour!

Yona looked up blankly at the mistress in front of her. It was the same for Marge, the head maid.

An upright posture. A low pitched voice which was eerily subdued.

Their mistress was scolding one of the attendants in the boutique, just like one of those ‘noble ladies’ that came from outstanding aristocratic households.

She wasn’t being unreasonable or causing a ruckus like she normally would, but was ‘rebuking’ them instead.

Adrienne herself was personally pointing every little thing on the bill and matching it with what it corresponded with on the dress.

“You said that this was an S-grade emerald?”

“Y-Yes, it’s obviously…”

“Obviously?”

He had already received criticism for three or four of the dresses, but Matias still tried to deny it one more time.

Adrienne directly tapped a rather large green jewel that was on the chest section with her finger.

“So you’re saying that, in your eyes, this is an S-grade emerald.”

“I, I’m merely in charge of transporting the goods, so I’m not too knowledgeable about the grading of the jewels, Miss.”

“Then you should let me tell you.”

Adrienne leaned towards the servant who had folded his waist in half, bringing her face closer to his.

Matias flinched when he met the twinkling light green eyes.

He had never seen a noble lady’s face from this close of a distance, furthermore one that was filled with hostility.

“Look at it properly.”

“Y-Yes.”

“Because the colour of an emerald of the finest grade is just like this.”

Adrienne used her eyes to gesture at it as she said so.

When the rough dark green emerald gemstone is cut again and again, a special liquid is poured into it and crafted, a light green emerald tinged with the clearest turquoise colour of the highest grade is born.

There was no way Matias could have known.

He had merely ordered for someone to replace it with an emerald of a lower grade.

Furthermore, the original emerald had obviously been extremely similar to the colour of Countess Acacia’s eyes.

“Y-Yes…”

“I really can’t believe it.”

Adrienne sighed lowly and looked at the rest of the dresses.

Each one was gorgeous and beautiful, but some of the jewels on them were subtly different from the ones on the bill.

In some cases, there were even gems that looked closer in appearance to the original uncrafted gemstone.

A quick glance through the order merely yielded a form full of scribbles that had just simply said, ‘with the most expensive item’.

It was a common order for people who didn’t have an eye for such things. Or people who didn’t need to worry about the price.

Of course, Blair had been the former.

She wouldn’t have known, so she would’ve wanted the best, the most expensive item.

However, Adrienne, who had to maintain her dignity as a princess from a very young age without a mother to guide her, was different.

After following her brother’s fiancee, Bianca, for a while, she had developed a good eye for picking reasonably good items.

Even though the Duchy of Piretta was the richest in the east, she still didn’t want to be scammed of her money, simply because she ‘didn’t know’.

“Ah, in any case, I must’ve brought the wrong one, Miss. I’ll bring Miss a new dress by this evening.”

“It’s fine.”

Matias signed in relief when the lady shook her head quietly.

Madame LeBlair was a famous designer in the capital, someone whom all the noblewomen wanted to get close with.

Since it was the fault of an employee, she probably wouldn’t bother complaining to her about it.

Just as he had thought of such frightening thoughts, Countess Acacia said with a smile.

“I’d like a refund for the ones that were replaced with those of lower grades, and I’ll have to get an apology from Madame herself.”

“I’d like a refund for the ones that were replaced with those of lower grades, and I’ll have to get an apology from Madame herself.”

“Pardon?!”

Madame LeBlair, Matias’ master, was never aware of this fact.

The fact that he makes money by swapping the jewels on a few of the noblewomen’s dresses.

However, if this noble lady suddenly asked for a refund just because of that, it’s only a matter of time before it reaches Madame LeBlair’s ears.

He clutched his trembling hands and politely asked.

“T-This is all my fault, Miss. Please let go of your anger and leave this to me! I’ll speak directly to the jeweler who supplied us this jewel, and of course, I’ll give madam a proper explanation when I bring your dress to you again!”

I have to swap the gems again, before Madame finds out.

That one thought dominated Matias’ head.

There’s still a chance to solve it.

If only I could take these hangers with me and change the jewelry again!

“No, I have no complaints about the dress. I just want the difference to be refunded since I paid too much for gems of this grade. If it was only a matter of giving me back the money, then I wouldn’t have made it this troublesome. However, since this is a matter of trust, if Madame doesn’t have enough time, I’ll also accept a letter of apology.”

“Mrs Marge, did you see that employee’s face earlier?”

“He looked like he was dying-. Madam, if you didn’t like the dress, you could’ve sent it back and received an even more luxurious dress as an apology, so why did you do that?”

Marge’s expression was extremely bright while bantering back and forth with Yona, even as she asked why I had done that.

Perhaps because of my sudden change, Marge, who occasionally toed the line by calling me Miss, had somehow suddenly called me Madam one day and treated me tenderly.

“Well, if I were to wear a dress with an emerald of the best class in my current case, I’d only receive a bunch of useless attention.”

Although the behavior of the staff was disgraceful, the end result had still been pretty satisfactory.

I relaxed my body, which I had focused a lot of strength and willpower on in order to show my dignity in front of the servants.

I was drunk on Blair’s healthy body which hardly ever felt fatigued.

It was like a dream. Although it had only been for a short while, I felt as if I had returned to the time when I had been healthy.

However, will there even be enough money within the County’s finances to spend on the already married Countess’ debut?

Although there weren’t many people within high society who knew what Grand Duchess Adrienne’s face looked like, wouldn’t it be troublesome if I met someone who recognised me?

However, making a debut couldn’t be avoided.

It was very unusual for Blair, who didn’t come from a noble background, to become the wife of the elderly Count Acacia, furthermore without even making her debut.

‘And I have to somehow find a way to meet Novian using this debutante season.’

“Nothing good comes out of receiving unnecessary attention. It’s enough just to show your face.”

“P-Pardon~?”

“Why… Why are you looking at me like that?”

Marge and Yona had the exact same expressions on their face as they looked at me, looks that said ‘Hey, I thought you always liked to be in the spotlight, no matter the time and place?’.

I turned my body slightly to avoid them, who had gotten used to putting their hands on my forehead.

It was still somewhat awkward being called ‘madam’ and being treated kindly after living a life as a princess and grand duchess.

I chuckled as I glanced at the dress hangers that I had put inside with an awkward gaze.

“N-Now that I look closely, aren’t these too revealing to be worn to a debutante?”

“Yes, it’s made exactly to your preferences.”

Yona answered brightly.

Ah, the dresses that had deep cuts in both the front and back must’ve been the shit that Blair added in.

I touched my head and wondered if there was a shawl that would be able to match it.

However, as soon as I recalled some of the shawls I had seen in the boutique, I had the impression of an opera singer, or some sort of flashy figure.

I shook my head in resignation.

“If you walk around dressed like that, instead of being inconspicuous, you’ll have all sorts of eyes following you.”

“Didn’t you always say that ‘To not show off such beauty is a sin.’?”

Yona said with a twinkle in her eyes.

Blair, this woman, just how many shameful words and actions did she have?

Although clothes are clothes, in order to meet Novian, who only participates in big parties, there was no better place to make a debut than the victory ceremony I had seen in the gossip tabloid earlier.

“I have to attend the victory ceremony…”

As soon as those words came out, Marge had an embarrassed expression that seemed to say, ‘so you had another dream like that?’, while Yona had a slightly awkward face.

“I, but… The victory ceremony is tomorrow. Madam…”

“Hmm?”

So we’re pressed for time. Thankfully I had a dress to wear though.

“There’s no invitation…”

“What?”

But I have to meet Noah soon!

So you’re saying that she didn’t even get an invitation?

Was she not invited since her origins were too lowly?

Although it was clearly an invitation that was easy to receive when I had been a Grand Duchess, it clearly must’ve not been the case here.

“What about the Count?”

“Pardon? The master was in the study the whole time…”

“I’m going to ask him if there’s any other way.”

I got up in a hurry and left the drawing room.

Tomorrow is the day of the victory ceremony.

Does Count Acacia have the power to receive an invitation to such a grand ceremony in such short notice?

As I climbed the stairs in a rush, the old butler rushed in from the entrance of the mansion.

“Madam! Madam!! Madam, madam!!”

As I stopped and looked down, Marge, snatched the small piece of paper from the butler’s hands and waved it around with an excited expression on her face.

“Heavens! It came! It’s come! An invitation to the victory ceremony has even come to the Acacia County! What an honour!”

“What…?”

You’re saying that an invitation from the imperial family came at this time at night?

I thought I would’ve had to write some kind of report to beg Count Acacia…

“You’ll be able to attend the ball tomorrow right away! Heavens, I’ve worked here for over 30 years, but this is the first time the Countess has been invited to such a big ball!”

Attracted by Marge’s loud voice, the servants all rushed out and tried to sneak a look at the invitation.

Perhaps because she couldn’t open it before me, Marge cheered as she waved the invitation she hadn’t even opened with a flushed face.

The face of Marge, who was leading the servants around like the Pied Piper, seemed genuinely happy.

I grabbed the railing with trembling hands, looking down at the servants who were rejoicing together.

‘Is this perhaps sent by Novian?’

After living in anguish for a few days, I had finally come to the conclusion that I wanted to confirm it directly with Novian in person.

‘Noah, I need to hear it directly from you.’

I won’t believe what anyone else says.

The time we spent together and our relationship with each other isn’t something that can be broken easily just from a few words from strangers whom I’ve met for the first time.

Right?

RMHM Ch 8 — The Pushover Amongst Pushovers

The Count’s pleading voice didn’t go through.

Rather, I suddenly remembered the firm words Bianca had told me before I became the Grand Duchess.

‘Rien, even if the Grand Duke happened to have a mistress… just pretend like you don’t know.’

Since everyone would keep their mouths shut, and he would still have another lover.

This had been what Bianca had given as advice to me, who didn’t have a mother.

Those words that I hadn’t kept in my mind at that time, along with the Count’s weeping, echoed in my heart.

What was worse was that on top of that, when I had been insecure due to my sick body, so weak that I was unable to prop myself up on the bed with my own strength…

‘If you had kept another healthy and beautiful woman as your mistress, how could I possibly tell you not to?’

I guess it was inevitable for me to also have those sort of thoughts at times.

So, even though I was suffering alone, I was able to feel reassured and repeat our secure relationship in my mind through presents and letters that were full of love.

Because he was always so sweet, so warm.

Because he treated me so delicately, as if I was a marionette made of glass.

‘But why?’

Why did Novian have a mistress who resembled me this much?

The same face, height, body shape, even the colour of our eyelashes was the same.

Just what did you discover was so new from this woman?

If it was black hair, then this country was overflowing with them.

Most of those passing by outside had brown or black hair.

Did she happen to catch Novain’s eye, just because he happened to have such terribly consistent preferences?

Then, what were the affectionate feelings that he and I had shared all this time?

We could’ve had sex if he really wanted to.

When we were on our honeymoon, when we had just been newlyweds, my body wasn’t going to shatter as if it was glass yet.

‘Because you’re precious to me.’

Those words which had warmed the anxious body and mind of the new bride, had let me to believe that this man was going to be my companion, whom I would be able to fully trust and my heart with.

At 20 years old, I had still been young.

At 28, he was already much older than me.

Everyone in the aristocratic circles was well aware of the fact that Grand Duke Novian, who had a young bride, was extremely devoted to his wife and in-laws, the Piretta Duchy.

Adrienne was the beloved Grand Duchess.

At least it seemed so from her husband, Novian Trovica.

On a cold windy day.

Neil felt a terrible chill and was more nervous than ever.

His master, Roadnez, hadn’t been able to fall asleep ever since he returned to the capital.

His reaction had been so big that anyone would’ve thought that he was the husband of the Grand Duchess Trovica.

Although everyone had merely thought that it had been due to the Mad Dog Prince’s odd whims, Neil, who had served him closely for two years, had a different opinion.

Roadnez had clearly received a huge shock upon hearing the death of the Grand Duchess.

The reason had been very easy to understand.

Right in front of his very own eyes, a wind, colder than the northern Trovica estate, was blowing right now.

“Duke.”

This was because, within the very imperial palace in which he was meant to be respected and honoured in, Roadnez was facing his uncle with a cold expression on his face, his bare body wrapped in bandages with only a jacket to cover him and a cast on his arm.

‘Please don’t say anything weird and just walk past him.’

Neil who was standing behind him, held his breath in the unusual atmosphere.

Grand Duke Novian’s haggard face was so precariously distraught that anyone who saw him would want to comfort him.

The Grand Duke bowed his head slightly first.

He looked gaunt, dark circles underneath his blue eyes which were normally always sharp and cold.

On the other hand, Roadnez, who was equally haggard and gaunt, but seemed to have all kinds of airs, did not bow his head.

His eyes which shone a bright red in the light, dared to look down at his uncle who was of similar height to him.

‘Is Adrienne Piretta really dead?’

All you have to do is spit out that one sentence.

Contrary to the arrogant expression on his face, Roadnez’s mouth was completely dry and he couldn’t seem to be able to open his mouth.

“I heard that they were holding some useless event called a victory ceremony…”

“Congratulations on your victory, Your Highness.”

“Of course, the Grand Duke will brighten up the place.”

“…”

Neil tugged at Roadnez’s jacket slightly from behind, as if to tell him not to open his mouth, but his lips didn’t stop.

“I’ll be disappointed if you don’t come, especially since I won the battle due to the troops you dispatched to the battlefield.”

“I understand, however…”

Novian’s blue eyes swiveled to look directly at Roadnez.

“I’m in mourning right now.”

“…”

“I have to guard my wife’s last path she’ll walk on, so I’ll be leaving court for now.”

Novian’s harsh voice echoed through the chilly hallway soon after.

Roadnez forcibly kept his head up.

The last path.

Those words deafened his ears.

“…I’ll go pay my condolences then.”

mio: god why are they both so FINEEEE

Novian forced a smile onto his lips.

It was unknown whether that smile was out of gratitude or not.

Novian, who had a subtle and sorrowful smile, bowed his head and left.

With trembling hands and feet, Neil, who had been watching this senseless fight, moved closer to Roadnez who was still standing tall and motionless.

“Haven’t you already paid your condolences, Your Highness?”

“Since I haven’t confirmed the corpse yet, it doesn’t count as paying condolences.”

“The Grand Duke must’ve already been informed of Your Highness’ attendance.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“But, Your Highness, after the first day of the funeral, the Grand Duke hasn’t taken out the corpse again.”

Vincento, who had been quiet, spoke up.

“…”

“He told the Emperor directly and said that he didn’t want the Grand Duchess’ corpse to become a spectacle.”

“Woah, isn’t that coming off too strongly? As expected of the romantic of the century…”

“But I wonder how many days the Grand Duke will be able to last? After all, this is still a mandated tradition that even the deceased Empress Lettina couldn’t avoid. If you wish to pay your respects formally, just follow the official procedures.”

“There’s no need for that.”

“Pardon…?”

“There’s no way that bastard will let go of her dead body.”

“What sort of…”

As if letting out a breath he had been holding back for a long time, Roadnez let out a deep sigh while combing his fingers through his hair and abruptly opened his mouth again.

“…Send an invitation to that damn victory ceremony to the estate of Count Acacia.”

“All of a sudden?”

“Wouldn’t they be absent since they’re a vassal of the Grand Duke?”

Even the master had said he wouldn’t attend, so how was it possible for a vassal to haha hihi hoho laughing and talking there?

Neil muttered back and forth with Vincento for a while before looking up at Roadnez abruptly again.

“Perhaps…?”

“The lady of the house is a young woman. Then there should be at least one maid that will accompany her.”

Neil and Vincento both stopped at the same time and opened their eyes wide.

“Are you going to meet Lady Marge in person?”

“Why the Acacia County’s maid all of a sudden…!”

Roadnez, who had stood tall, staring at the hallway where the Grand Duke had disappeared, suddenly disappeared in the other direction without answering their questions.

[ / / / ]

I shut myself in the mansion for a while in shock.

Although I was browsing through the newspapers and gossip magazines that Marge had brought me, my will had disappeared and my body, which had been brimming with strength, suddenly sagged.

“A ball to be held to commemorate the victory of His Highness, the Second Prince, Roadnez. The recently trending dress and hat brands that will captivate and capture the mysteriously beautiful yet dangerous single prince will be…?!”

All I could see whilst browsing the gossip tabloids was news about Roadnez, the Second Prince.

The news of him returning to the capital earlier than expected after recently wiping out all traces of the western rebels and the remnants of their troops seemed to be of considerable interest to the aristocrats.

That was understandable.

The Second Prince, Roadnez, hadn’t been back to the capital in these few recent years.

With the Crown Prince and his wife taking the lead with external activities, the princes and princesses underneath them didn’t show their faces here and there unless they had other people who they were privately acquainted with.

Although the Second Prince, Roadnez, was rumored to be such an exceptional figure that he appeared frequently in the gossip tabloids, he still preferred to roam around the battlefield in order to accumulate merits instead of at a party with dancing and music.

Perhaps the moment the Crown Prince, who is also his older brother, ascends to the throne, he would be recognised for his achievements and receive a fief as a Grand Duke or Duke, just like Altoran.

‘Just like Novian.’

My heart suddenly felt stuffy as soon as I thought of Novian.

“I don’t want to be involved in this anymore. I don’t want to be stuck like this between the two of you. Wasn’t the reason why we had that nonsensical wedding between you and I in the first place, just so you could legally become the Grand Duke’s mistress?”

Count Acacia had told me about it plainly.

The reason Blair married him was to become Novian’s “legitimate” mistress.

‘It’s not even funny.’

There’s no such thing as a legal mistress in the first place.

That meant that he had just tacitly gone according to the custom within high society, which was to not take unmarried men or women as an outside lover.

This empire was truly broadminded, to be so tolerant to having outside lovers, even if their partner was standing right in front of them, to even wash away the guilt of having one by specifying that only those who were already married were qualified to be mistresses.

“Ha-”

Although it was a position I wasn’t aware would make me feel so dirty and disgusting until later, that was how everyone lived.

Everyone…

“Madam. The dresses you were fitted for have arrived.”

“Dress?”

It was the maid Yona, who broke my pessimistic thoughts that followed.

It was Yona, who was in charge of me along with the head maid, Marge, the child who talks to me often despite being so afraid of Blair before.

“Yes, I tweaked it just as you ordered it last time.”

I thought of the things that were crammed into the dressing room.

As Adrienne, I rarely ever wore clothes that were made for outside wear.

However, although I had received quite a few clothes from Novian in the name of maintaining dignity, Blair had an absurd amount of clothes for the size of this mansion.

“Didn’t you say you wanted to make your debut this season?”

Yona asked curiously when I furrowed my eyebrows and didn’t think to answer.

A debutante.

Originally, a debutante is not just held once, but throughout the season at parties.

Of course, the original me didn’t participate in many parties since I received a proposal letter from Novian right after my first debutante.

“I…haven’t even made my debut yet?”

“Didn’t I just say that?”

“Aren’t I already twenty two years old?”

“That’s right! You felt so mortified and depressed since you weren’t able to even hold a single debutante at the age of twenty two so you told the Count that you’d burn down the entire mansion if he didn’t prepare for it properly.”

My face turned red in an instant.

Although it wasn’t actually me who said it, the embarrassing thing was that I had actually possessed this sort of person.

What the hell was this Blair woman thinking to have said that?

In any case, it’s clear that she’s not of noble origin anyways.

“So…where are my dresses now?”

[ / / / ]

Matias, who worked in Madame LeBlair’s boutique, swallowed his saliva dryly.

The reason was because Countess Acacia, who was called the pushover amongst pushovers, was furrowing her eyebrows while looking at the bill today for some reason.

Although she didn’t have an eye for products and was a pushover, she still had a formidable temper.

He felt dizzy just remembering when she had thrown a perfume bottle at his head after blaming him for the insufficient dress hemming.

‘But so what if you know?’

Although it was impossible to deceive the outstanding noble ladies, the humble families that tried to chase after the trends of the great nobles were perfect prey.

All it took for them to start nodding their heads was a short, ‘It’s because you don’t know what you’re talking about, if we’re talking about this part…’, and they were fooled, deceived by the fancy rhetoric since they felt inferior.

Countess Acacia was exactly one of these customers.

It was because after placing an order for ‘the best thing’ or ‘the most impressive thing’, they still weren’t able to tell if the gem was real or not, since it didn’t fit their budget.

However…

“Ha, this scam, I’m done with trying to do this legally.”

The cold voice of Countess Acacia, the pushover amongst pushovers, resounded through the main hall.

IBOMLEW Ch 4 Part 2 — A Husband Who’s Shaken By His Wife’s Transformation

After closing the door, Fervin placed a hand on his heart.

Irwen was his beloved wife.

After a close battle with the Principality of Verma, he eventually reached the capital where he came face to face with a woman who also stole his attention, his first love.

It was the first time he had wanted someone so desperately in his life, and it was also the first time he had tried to win another’s heart so desperately.

Although the marriage had apparently been ordered by the Emperor as a diplomatic measure, it had actually been a marriage which he had stubbornly pushed for, even after knowing that the Emperor’s younger brother, Duke Sibelom, was also pursuing her.

After much difficulty and loss, I finally had her.

So I vowed to be faithful to my marriage and did everything for her, who had actually married into a foreign country.

I showered her with splendid clothes, accessories, books, and, countless maids, so much so that even the Empress could not help but envy her.

And he thought that if she could just see his sincerity through his actions, Irwin would definitely be able to adapt well as his Duchess and, above all, be happy remaining by his side.

However, it was his mistake in judging her so hastily.

She had made biting remarks, even during the process in which they were preparing for the wedding.

On their first night together, the amount of swear words that poured out of her chattering teeth that were aimed at him were not even able to be put into words.

Above all else, Irwen’s words of saying that she would rather die than have sex with him made his heart freeze.

Seeing as his wife hated him this much, Fervin’s affection for her had to be sealed to one side.

Now he thought that his feelings for Irwen had already been solely bound properly against a cold ice wall.

However, his heart had suddenly started beating again some time ago when it had clearly already cooled down.

Ever since Irwen woke up from fainting, ever since she started treating him kindly, his heart had been racing uncontrollably fast.

So he was more and more confused.

Whether or not Irwen had been acting in order to deceive him, with such a thought in his mind, he suddenly barged into her room in order to find out.

Although the bar that locked his feelings for her away in his heart was already free, he still stubbornly tried to find his rationality.

No matter how much he thought over it, he still didn’t know why she had become so warm after showing nothing but hatred for four years, so in the end, he wondered whether or not she had devised a new ruse in order to give birth to an heir and solidify her position.

It was like that, since he knew that people wouldn’t change so easily.

It was because he was also like that as well, he whose heart fluttered when he fell in love with her at first sight.

However, I had clearly come in order to make an agreement with her, so I had to calm down and face her properly, but…

Irwen’s blue eyes that were soaked with tears shimmered in front of me.

It was clear that his wife, who was as cold as ice, had changed.

You’re saying, you’re able to shed tears?

Tears as translucent as amethyst fell from the eyes of that venomous woman whose blood wouldn’t spill, even if she was pricked with a thousand needles.

Did you really repent?

Those glassy blue eyes which always looked at me with such a spiteful gaze, were full of sorrow and chagrin as they stared at me today.

It was the first time I had felt so flustered.

So I had spat out more venomous remarks, and treated her even more harshly.

Even though that wasn’t what I had really meant.

Fervin sighed frustratingly and looked back again.

From afar, Mrs Tilly drew nearer to him with hurried steps.

“Did you deliver the dress to madam properly?”

To Fervin, who turned his head without answering, Mrs Tilly gave him advice whilst clicking her tongue.

“You shouldn’t have just handed her the dress, you should have said something to her as well. That’s a pretty dress, or something like that, just everyday conversation or small talk.”

“Do I look like I’m in that situation right now, Mrs Tilly?”

“Master, you should at least give it a go, it’s so obvious that madam is putting in a lot of effort…”

Mrs Tilly’s voice grew smaller and smaller.

Mrs Tilly, who only remained taciturn in front of Irwen because of her attitude which had changed into one that was so kind.

But on the inside, she was very happy with her change.

After observing Irwen for the past few days, she gave a prayer of thanks to God since it seemed as if the result of her constant praying was finally showing.

For four years, she had prayed earnestly for Irwen, the venomous princess of a foreign country, to possess a good heart through the grace of God, and Irwen had exhibited that in the past few days.

Not only did she no longer speak spitefully, but she would also be concerned when the servants sniffed and wonder if they had caught a cold.

And above all, her complexion had changed.

Her complexion, which had been malevolent, as if she emitted cold air, had returned to a face with a healthy complexion.

When she finally mustered up the courage to look at Irwen’s face, which she had never looked at before due to her fear of her, Mrs Tilly was startled to say the least.

Throughout the Principality of Verma and even spreading to Theresia, the rumours of her appearance were well founded, for her face was truly beautiful.

In particular, her face, which was devoid of malice, truly made others feel awe.

The servants who had been afraid of her were all obsessed with her changed appearance.

“I always knew that madam was beautiful, but I think she’s become even more beautiful these days.”

“I didn’t know since I was so scared of her before, but those eyes of hers are really pretty. They’re like a clear lake reflected in the dawn sunlight.”

“It’s as if she’s been reborn.”

Mrs Tilly was deep in thought when Fervin asked in a covert voice.

“Mrs Tilly, I just have one question. What does it usually mean when a woman cries? Other than crying out of sadness, I mean.”

“Uh… Although I usually only cry because I’m sad… But that’s not just limited to women… Why, did madam cry? Then I’ll have to go inside quickly.”

Mrs Tilly shot him a bewildered look.

To Fervin Carlisle, Irwen was the first and only woman to enter his world.

Irwen, his only woman and wife, who had shown him nothing but her anger.

That’s why her crying this time made Fervin extremely flustered.

‘I’m flustered by Irwen’s crying? Why am I like this?’

When Mrs Tilly rushed inside, Fervin gently put his ear against the door.

There was no sound of a woman crying inside.

That’s a relief.

…That’s a relief?

I’m in a really bizarre state today.

Fervin thought that he’d better calm his frazzled state of mind down with swordsmanship and walked off with a quick pace.

The one to blame for his constantly fidgety movements and lip biting was Irwen, who kept shimmering before his eyes.

[ / / / ]

The day of the cultural festival finally arrived.

With guests arriving at the grand banquet hall one after another.

I put on a pure white dress and warmed up my throat in the grand banquet room.

“Ahhhh~.”

“Your throat is in great shape, ma’am. And the pitch is so accurate.”

The pianist who would be playing the accompaniment in the grand banquet room looked up at me with admiration over and over again.

I shrugged my shoulders shyly.

“Do you really think it’s alright? It won’t be embarrassing for it to be performed in front of other people?”

“You’ve shown such excellent skill since the beginning, and you’ve been practicing this song with me for two weeks already. When effort is added to talent, it can’t be more wonderful than this, ma’am.”

Marianne, who was watching from the side, enthusiastically chimed in as well.

“I heard that originally, people who are good at something are often more anxious, but madam, you’ll definitely do well!”

“Thank you, everyone.”

I pushed aside the anxiousness I felt being on stage and ran through today’s schedule once again.

The song I would sing at the cultural festival held today at the Carlisle mansion would be ‘Can’t help but cling onto you who left’.

It was a song that I had enjoyed singing in my past life, except I had tweaked the lyrics into a new version of the song.

I planned to emphasise the phrase ‘Please, just give me one chance, please forgive me’ from the lyrics when I sang.
tl/n: crying, the cringe is too much hALSDKFJDS

Although it may have been childish, I was determined to convey my sincerity to Fervin through the song.

And this was all thanks to the advice I had received from Mrs Tilly.

“Master takes a special liking to songs. Whenever he goes to a banquet, he’ll always listen closely to the minstrels’ singing. Of course, I’ve never heard him sing. He has a nice voice so I’m sure he would sound very dashing.”

That’s right, today’s song will soften Fervin’s heart.

I’m even singing a song this time, so there’s no way you’ll hate this too, right?

Alright, let’s slowly pick up the pieces of this relationship.

At the very least, let’s hope he doesn’t hate me, so I won’t provoke his hatred later.

After practicing my singing for a while, Mrs Tilly rushed in.

Initially, I was excited about the event being held at the mansion today, but now, I was somehow full of worry for some reason.

“His Majesty, the Emperor, and Her Majesty, the Empress, and even the one who wasn’t on the list… His Grace, Duke Sibelom, has arrived.”

“I’ll be right down.”

I clenched my fists as I looked at myself in the mirror.

Today is the first day I’ll introduce the reborn Irwen to the world.

In the meantime, since I’ve only remained in the Carlisle mansion and not interacting with the people of the Theresia Empire at all, everyone must be looking at me closely today.

With this performance I’m going to show you today, I’ll make it clear that Irwen is actually a talented and versatile lady.

And I’ll have to touch everyone when I dedicate the song to Duke Carlisle as a heartfelt apology.

That’s right, I’ll definitely change my image.

A cultured lady who sings moving songs instead of a wicked wife whose tongue is like a thorn.

Just as I was about to walk off in a hurry, Mrs Tilly hurriedly stopped me.

“Madam, please wait a moment. Master said that he would come up here earlier.”

Seeing Mrs Tilly staring at the door anxiously, I shook my head as if it was impossible.

“There’s no way he would escort me, Mrs Tilly. He hates me so much…”

“There’s no way the master would hate you, madam. That’s too much of an assumption, madam.”

“Although it was the first cultural festival that would be held at the residence of Duke Carlisle, I was the one who deferred this duty to the other ladies during that time, so it can’t be helped if Fervin hates me. However, I’ll definitely do a good job starting from today anyways.”

It was when I was about to turn open the doorknob.

The doorknob swung open from the outside.

Fervin, who was one head taller than me, was looking down at me casually.

He was wearing a luxurious navy blue uniform and his platinum blond hair fluttered naturally down to his neck.

His face that only looked at me, no matter which way I looked at it, was always beautiful.

I clenched my teeth at his unrealistic proportions that seemed to pop out of a painting.

He just looked at me without saying a word.

I wasn’t sure whether he had been listening since earlier, or if he had just arrived.

But there was a light blush on the face of him who looked at me.

His green eyes that were looking at me were shaking strangely.

“I hate you? You’re still thinking as you like, Irwen.”

“I’ll withdraw for now.”

“Let’s go together, Mrs Tilly…”

Click.

As Mrs Tilly hurried out, as if someone was going to eat her, Fervin suddenly locked the door.

“Why’d you lock it?”

“Well, I wonder why I locked it?”

Fervin murmured as he quietly approached me.

His gaze was firmly fixed on me.

IBOMLEW Ch 4 — A Husband Who’s Shaken By His Wife’s Transformation (1)

His tone was one that was obviously overbearing, so why did his expression seem to be faltering so perilously?

The way he clung to me was as if he was longing for me.

Although I was only shaken by him for a moment, I still wasn’t able to talk in this state.

I felt as if I could finally understand why all the women of the empire were attracted to him.

Due to our closeness, it felt as if his body was pulling me towards him, as if he was seducing me.

“I can’t talk in this state anymore. Let’s talk properly after I get up.”

“I won’t let you go until I hear the truth.”

“I just told the truth though.”

“I’m still unaware of what you really think, Irwen.”

This guy, seriously.

I glared at Fervin as hard as I could from underneath him, and pushed myself away, shoving the body underneath his uniform with as much force as I could muster.

It only took a moment for that disheveled uniform to become a mess.

Of course, my position, my body, was no longer uncomfortable.

Despite the large and slender shadow that was clearly cast over my body, I didn’t feel as if there was any pressure on my chest that was moving up and down.

He was trying not to hurt me.

It’s just that I wasn’t allowed to leave his embrace.

A strong scent from his body enveloped us.

I could clearly feel all of the solid body underneath the uniform he was wearing.

The tense arms that imprisoned me, and the body that seemed to possess firm muscles too.

I diligently tried to stop my face from turning red.

Fervin saw me in that sort of state and whispered in my ear.

“I’ll say it again. If you’re just playing your shallow tricks again, then you’d better stop now.”

“I’m not playing any tricks. You’ve just misunderstood my sincerity in reflecting on the past and repentance.”

“Reflected on the past and repented… So what have you finally understood?”

“As I’ve been telling you over and over again, fulfilling all of the duchess’ duties and completing this contractual marriage safely…”

Fervin snorted once he heard my words.

“That’s not hard to say, Irwen. You could’ve just been honest with me and said that you wanted to trick me into letting you give birth to the Carlisle Duchy’s heir by saying you wanted to get along with me. So, who made such a suggestion to you? Is that why you changed to such an approach?”

“Wh… What?”

“Since you’ll be able to consolidate your position through a child who has both the blood of Verma and Theresia if you have a good relationship with me. However, I don’t believe it at all, this sudden change of yours I mean.”

“It’s not like that…”

“All you’ve shown me thus far was a ridiculous attitude, and now you think I’ll look favourably on you if you come at me in such a humble manner? Did you think it would be that easy to trick me into giving you my child?”

“I…”

To think of such an absurd thing, seriously, this man!

Tears suddenly welled up in my eyes

This situation was just pissing me off.

Of all things, I was resentful of the fact that I had possessed Irwen who was such an evil wife, as well as this situation in which my effort to change went unacknowledged by Fervin.

Of course, I was also aware that my situation might not turn out as I wish.

During the four years of marriage, she criticises the servants, sends back the specialties of the Carlisle Dukedom which she was told not to send back to the Principality of Verma and also hurled abusive and spiteful remarks at her husband, so he must’ve gotten sick of it already.

Of course he’d doubt his wife, who has suddenly changed.

Still, I felt resentful towards him for not believing the effort I had put in over the course of several weeks.

Furthermore, I felt bitter at the fact that I had entered the body of Irwen Lillias rather than the body of the female lead, Stella. If I had entered her body instead, I wouldn’t have to constantly face those cold eyes.

Tears welled up involuntarily in my eyes when I met his chilly gaze.

These tears weren’t of sadness, but rather tears of resent and anger.

As I tried to hold back my tears and refrain from sobbing, Fervin hurriedly lifted me from my position.

It was him who looked at me with a hint of fluster.

“Are you crying?”

“Can I not even cry when I want to now? Are you going to doubt this too?”

“It’s not that…”

Just as he raised his elegant finger to wipe the tears from my eyes.

Before I knew it, my eyes were covered with tears.

I could feel the tears trickling down my cheeks.

Since you lose if you cry, I thought that I should stop these embarrassing tears of frustration first.

However, I didn’t know how to stop my tears from coming out.

I wiped my tears with the blue handkerchief that Fervin who was next to me had handed to me, but once they burst, the tears showed no signs of stopping.

His sharp eyes stared down at me.

He cleared his throat and struggled to keep his composure.

“Don’t cry. Crying won’t change anything.”

“I’m not crying, it’s just that there are tears flowing from my eyes.”

His shoulders shook as he wiped my tears away with his wet handkerchief, then wiped them away again.

The large handkerchief was already drenched.

I was originally the type who cried more when they were told not to cry.

Fervin stared at me, biting his lip,  then suddenly reached a hand out.

He took my hand, then lowered it.

I glared at him as I cried, out of breath.

“What are you doing? Are you saying you don’t want to see me cry anymore? Isn’t that your type?

Then, Fervin placed his hand on my face.

He wiped the tears from both of my cheeks.

Cupping my cheeks with four slim fingers, he wiped my eyes with his thumb.

Silence came with his sudden action.

Fervin blinked, as if he also didn’t expect himself to do such a thing.

It was gentle beyond measure, as if it was an action done between lovers.

The tears that were clinging to my eyelashes dripped onto his fingers.

The long and elegant fingers trembled.

Fervin’s deep green eyes met mine.

The moment he stared intently into my trembling eyes.

He seemed to have come to his senses.

He hurriedly got off the bed.

After staring at the window where the warm sunlight entered from for a moment, he suddenly turned to me.

He covered his face with both hands as if he were confused, then clenched his teeth.

“If I’m misunderstanding, then make it clear here, Irwen. What’s the point in tiring me out and making it so hard on me for four years, then suddenly changing now?”

“I’m fully aware of how hard of a time I’ve been giving you and how I haven’t fulfilled my official duties as the Duchess of Carlisle. Our marriage is officially recognised by the Emperor for five years. For the rest of the year, I’ll faithfully do my duties as a duchess, so please give me a chance to make up for my mistakes so far.”

“Then the child…”

Before he could come to his own conclusions, I answered hastily.

“I’ve never thought of having a child before, not even once. It will continue to be that way in the future, so don’t worry about that.”

“Not even once… Not even once, never thought…”

For some reason, he seemed to be grinding his teeth.

“Although you were forced to marry me under His Majesty’s orders, fortunately, you can get a divorce after this year, so you’ll be able to have a beloved child with a woman you like. Or you could think of another way. I’ll respect your wishes. Instead, I’ll fulfill my duties as your wife for a year and give you a divorce, so please respect my wishes as well.”

“…”

Fervin quickly turned around.

He strode towards the door.

I thought he was going to grab the doorknob and leave, but he suddenly turned tow3ards me.

His green eyes were thick with emotion.

“Your wishes, I’ll respect it. I can’t guarantee how long it’ll be for though.”

Thud.

As soon as Fervin opened the door and left, I let out a tense breath, exhaling.

That man was no ordinary human.

As expected of the Emperor’s right hand man, it’s not easy to dispel his doubts.

It seemed that the future was not going to be a smooth journey.

Even if I couldn’t get him to look upon me favourably, I still have to do my best to fulfil my duties and earn his trust.

Because that’s the only way I’ll survive here.

Sigh… What sort of sin did I commit for me to enter the body of Irwen Lillias?

I buried my relaxed face in the blanket.

SMCS Ch 3 — Can You Stand Up?

“Ugh, god…”

I barely managed to pull myself up, my sore knees shaking since I had slammed into the floor too hard. At my feet was the fallen door, along with crushed stones that were scattered all over the place.

When I had finally looked back behind me, the spot where the door had been before was empty.

Heok.”

My lips fluttered open again against my will.

The hand that had slammed onto the door was still tingling. That adamant iron door which hadn’t even budged despite my hand turning into this sort of state, had fallen away with just a slight push. Does this even make any sense?

I looked around to see if someone else had done it, but not even a shadow could be seen.

Then…did I really do this?

“No, that’s crazy.”

I pinched both cheeks in admiration.

Seeing as I could feel the tingling pain, this was definitely reality.

Don’t tell me, those cookies…was it thanks to them?

Bonus Cookies? Reward…?

My head was filled with puzzling and mysterious words.

Although there wasn’t anyone that could tell me what was going on with all of this, one thing was certain.

“Now is not the time for this!”

I was a little worried since the sound the iron door had made whilst it broke had been pretty loud, but if there was anyone guarding the area nearby, no one had come to check on the situation.

After all, even I never would’ve dreamed that I would break that thick iron door and escape.

The hallway was dark since there was no need for people to come here unless it was for something particular, and since there were no public candles, the inside where I had been trapped in was extremely dark and gloomy.

“Just what kind of room did you make?!”

My anger levels started rising again as I looked at the strings hanging from the ceiling.

“You crazy character!”

I cursed him with all my heart sincerely before quickly turning around.

First, let’s get out of here!

I cursed him with all my heart sincerely before quickly turning around.

First, let’s get out of here!

[ / / / ]

I rolled up my cumbersome dress with one hand and sat down in the corner of the garden, gasping for breath.

I was completely out of breath after running all over the place, avoiding people’s eyes.

Not far away, I spotted a small iron gate.

It was the back door that was used by the servants and merchants.

That was the last gate.

Although I had somehow managed to get out of the mansion by hiding, the problem right now was that there were three or four gatekeepers keeping guard right in front of me.

How was I meant to get rid of those people?

They were standing with rigid postures and looked around with sharp eyes. It wouldn’t be easy for me to distract them since they weren’t ordinary employees but rather, well-trained soldiers who were more skilled than anyone else.

But I couldn’t just stay like this. It would only be a matter of time before someone finds out that I’m gone.

At that moment, I was biting my lips and wondering if there was anything that could be done.

A thought suddenly flashed through my mind like lightning

“S-Screen! Window!”

When I had almost run out of breath from shouting, the screen really did pop up in front of my eyes.

「Would you like a second cookie?
1. Yes.
2. No.」

“Yes, this is it! The same cookie as before!

I crouched down in order not to be found out completely and whispered softly..

“Please give me a cookie! Right this instant!”

As soon as I finished speaking, a golden gauge flashed in the air again. Filled with anticipation, I slowly crept towards the door.

However, for some reason, the gatekeepers did not move.

…Is this not it?

I looked closely at the status window in front of me once more.

Unlike the first cookie, the rate at which the golden bar was decreasing at was incredibly slow.

However, despite it being so, why wasn’t anything happening? Could I have been wrong?

As I gulped dryly without knowing what to do in embarrassment, a loud shout was suddenly heard from inside the mansion.

“F-Fire!”

I hurriedly turned my head to see gray smoke rising from a window on the second floor.

The mansion quickly descended into chaos. People ran around frantically in front of the bush where I was hiding.

Among them, a man holding a bucket shouted loudly at the gatekeeper.

“What are you doing? Go and get the fire blanket right now!”

“Ah, yes! Right away!”

As soon as the order was given, they ran towards the warehouse in confusion.

The front of the iron gate had suddenly become deserted before I knew it.

I rubbed both of my eyes and looked from the iron gate to the gauge which was still shrinking minutely.

“There’s no way a fire was started from baking the cookies…right?”

I asked myself for a while, but I couldn’t come up with an answer.

There was only one thing that was clear.

That the only time to be escape would be now.

Even if i couldn’t come back once I left, I had no intention of going back from the beginning.

I clenched my teeth and started running towards the empty door.

[ / / / ]

At the same time.

Strict commands were deployed to the servants who were running helter skelter in terror.

“Bring the water, quickly!”

“Yes, right away sir!”

The servants rushed to carry out Periot’s orders. Someone quickly brought a vase with all of its flowers removed while others rushed to the bathroom with a bucket.

In the meantime, Periot took off the cloak he was wearing. Then, he swung it wildly over the frame that was engulfed in flames.

“G-Give it to me. Duke. I’ll do it!”

The butler was startled and tried to dissuade him but his hand was unstoppable.

Every time the wind would blow, Periot’s black eyes would also shake as if they were a storm.

‘What the hell was going on?’

He could have never mistakenly seen it, nor could he ever have dreamt of this happening.

He had clearly seen it.

Flames had suddenly begun to soar out of nowhere from the frame that hung gently on the study wall.

It hadn’t even been windy, nor was there anything around it that could suddenly catch fire, so just how did this happen…?

Furthermore, the document that lay inside the frame was the marriage vows he had exchanged with Lorella.

Most important of all was that since it was a document that remained as a preservation of their devotion, no one was allowed to damage it!

He bit his lip and swung his cloak with all his might. But the fire still showed no signs of extinguishing.

“Duke!”

At the same time as someone’s urgent call, a whoosh sound was suddenly heard from behind.

A servant who had filled the bucket first had urgently splashed the water on the Duke who was standing near the frame.

Hit by a flood of water in an instant, water dripped down from his head. All the servants surrounding him were startled and frozen in place.

However, far from getting angry, Periot took a bucket from the hands of another servant who had arrived, one after another. Then he started pouring water directly onto the frame.

Amidst everyone’s urgent movements, acrid smoke rose in all directions.

Periot, who had not lost his nobility even on the battlefield, was drenched from head to toe as if he had fallen into a pond.

However the unbelievable events didn’t end there.

“T-The fire isn’t going out…!”

“How did this happen?!”

Voices filled with dismay sounded from everywhere. Everyone started to doubt their own eyes.

The fire that had spread to the curtains and bookshelves of the study had been quenched by the water baptism, but the fire on the wedding vows remained unextinguished, rather, it continued to grow in size.

“Let’s try and do this instead!”

At that time, the knight who brought the thick fire blanket pressed it as if to completely cover the frame. Meanwhile, the servants who had refilled their buckets also came flocking in.

The Duke’s study, which had always been organised in a neat manner, became a sea of water. Gray dust fell everywhere like snow as well.

Was this some sort of sign?

“Duke! It’s a big problem!”

A loud cry rang out from far away.

Then, a soldier ran into the room, gasping for breath and shouted loudly.

“T-The Duchess has disappeared…!”

In an instant, silence struck.

As if it was the eve of a storm.

Periot’s head turned towards the door.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“M-My apologies sir. Keuk, hic!

Although he had a low voice, the soldier facing him was so surprised that he began to hiccup. That’s because that was the first time in his life seeing such a scary face.

“By the time I gone in hic, the iron door had already been broken…I deserve to die!”

Everyone there was stunned by those words. But no one had suffered as great of a shock as Duke Periot.

“The iron door…was broken?”

It was as if Periot’s mind was completely empty. It something he hadn’t even experienced on the blood-splattered battlefield.

In the end, all that remained in his head was Lorella’s face. He had never forgotten it, ever since the day of their wedding.

“Oh, Lord God…”

One of the maids who was frightened by the chaos, murmured in a small voice.

At that moment, a single thought flashed by Periot’s mind and pierced it sharply.

…Is this the work of the person you’ve been meeting with secretly?

“So you’re a man of black magic.”

At that moment, the charred picture frame dropped from the bottom of the fire blanket that the knight had been holding with shaking arms.

The only thing that had survived the fierce fire was the round iron ring that had been used to hang it on the wall.

The moment it rolled over and stopped at Periot’s feet.

“Close all the gates of the castle and my fiefdom immediately!”

A harsh voice which had not been heard by anyone in the mansion before came out of his mouth.

“Gather every soldier. We will thoroughly search through this area with every means available to us, whether that be a dog or a horse.

“Yes, right away sir! I heed your order!”

The soldier shouted confidently, as if he was trying to make up for his earlier mistake.

“We will report to you as soon as we receive news!”

“No, I’ll be taking the lead myself.”

Periot spoke as if he was chewing on each and every word.

“Since I have to keep my promise and cut off that bastard’s head.”

The sound of grinding teeth leaked out from between his teeth.

He put on his dripping cloak which had been burned here and there and left the study at a brisk pace.

“D-Duke!”

The startled soldier hurriedly pursued him, but it was as if he couldn’t hear anything.

The sound of the shoes of the servants running down the stairs and the heavy armor of the soldiers gathering in unison resounded everywhere.

It was the first time that a mansion that had always been so still and quiet, was so noisy.

[ / / / ]

I ran and ran with my teeth clenched tightly together.

Night descended quickly in the north, and at the same time, the temperature dropped to the point where my teeth chattered. The wind blew so hard that I could hear a whistle in my ear.

Nevertheless, the sweat on my forehead didn’t cool off.

Heok, heok…”

A shaky breath escaped from my lips, along with a heavy breath.

I wonder just how long I had been running for. The road had gradually started to get narrower, and soon a dense forest appeared on the side.

However, I didn’t stop moving my legs. No, I couldn’t stop.

As soon as I stood still, I felt as if the hand that had pushed me into that room would descend upon me and grab me by the neck.

My red hair which had always streamed down to my waist had already been disheveled since long ago. The lace, which had adorned the pleats of the dress had been caught on a rough branch and had holes in it.

Even now, both heels of my feet were throbbing and in pain due to the high heels.

Ding dong!

「The second cookie has been used.」

「Marriage annulled.」

Another bright window appeared in front of my eyes with another message popping up, but I didn’t even have time to read it.

As I was running on the rough forest trail, something hard suddenly caught my ankle. Without a centre of gravity, my body fell backwards and tumbled down onto the dirt floor.

“Aiyah!”

The sound of a scream suddenly broke the silence. I quickly covered my mouth with my hand and looked around.

The unidentified night1 flew away with a flap of its wings. Thankfully, there were no signs of people anywhere nearby.

“Ah, hic…

My ankles were burning and my palms were a mess of broken skin. My whole body was full of wounds.

However, I stood up immediately and refused to give up.

Then, I started running faster than before. Not only did it seem to burn my sides, but also to the inside of my throat, but I couldn’t care less.

Because I could clearly hear the dogs barking furiously in the distance when I had fallen.

“You, you crazy motherfucker!”

A tearful voice erupted out of nowhere.

There was a large breeding ground on the west side of the Duke’s mansion. It was a place where dozens of Tosa2 dogs were raised.

Goosebumps welled up on the nape of my neck when I thought of the dogs that were bigger than most children.

I heard that those dogs were used to hunt bears that attacked private property since they had nothing to eat during the winter!

Hic, am I a bear? Am I a bear?! Hic!”

No matter how many tree branches I crashed through, the metallic taste of blood lingered on the tip of my tongue, as if I had bitten through my lips several times.

However, my own two legs were already out of my own control and moved automatically like machines under any circumstance.

In the end, I finally took off my high heels and held them in my arms.

“It hurts…! Ack, ouch!”

Even though I screamed every time I ran, I was still able to run much faster than I was before when wearing high heels.

‘If I get caught now, it’s over. I might even be hunted like a bear.’

With that thought, I couldn’t really think of anything but running.

However, the forest that seemed to get thicker the deeper I went kept slowing me down. I had to slow down a few times, relying only on the dim moonlight to navigate the way.

At last, I finally saw a clear path through the dense trees. It seemed as if I had finally come all the way to this road after running through the mountain trail.

But then, the sound of horseshoes was heard from far away.

“Ugh.”

Hiding behind a tree, I glanced around and saw two men riding horses. They weren’t rushed, rather they went at a fairly leisurely pace.

I wonder if the search party has already come this far. Aren’t you going too slow to be finding me?

I bit my lip in frustration and looked around quickly.

Then a large thicket covered with leafy vines suddenly caught my eye.

‘I’ll hide like a dead mouse over there until they pass by.’

It was impossible to for me to run away silently in a forest with so many dry leaves and branches.

It was the moment when I made a decision and took a quick step forward.

Ack!”

Was it because I had acted too quickly? My foot suddenly tripped over a small protruding stone.

And of course it’s the little toe! Of all my damn toes!

“Ahhh-heup…!”

I couldn’t bear the pain and just fell right onto the middle of the road.

“Ah! There’s someone over there!”

At the same time, I could hear them running towards me.

I was urgently thinking of a way to run away somehow, but I couldn’t even move my feet, let alone get up.

M-My toenails…! You didn’t fall off, did you?!

“Are you alright?”

As I was struggling to get up, a soft voice penetrated my ears.

In a blink of an eye, before I had even raised my head slightly, there was already someone next to me, kneeling on one knee. The man who was still astride on his horse seemed to have approached me before I even knew it.

Although the surrounding area was dark and obscured his face, the numerous medals attached to his white uniform shone in the pitch-black darkness. Loosely tied blonde hair was thrown casually over one shoulder.

“You look hurt, can you stand up?”

Woof! Woof!

There was the sound of another dog barking in the dark sky again.

It was different from the one before. It must have been heard from somewhere close by.

“Hold onto me. I’ll help you up.”

Meanwhile, the man spoke to me in a friendly voice, as if he didn’t know who I was.

Fortunately, he didn’t seem to be a part of the search party. Then that’s enough for me.

Without thinking any further, I clung to his arm first.

“Don’t worry, I’m not a suspicious person…”

“Please help me. I, I have to run away, right now!”

Only then did I get a close look at the man’s face in the moonlight. He was staring at me with his eyes wide open in surprise.

Grrr, woof!

Even at that moment, that sound was getting closer and closer.

My heart was pounding urgently with the fear that the ferocious dogs might run into my back at any moment.

“H-Hurry!”

Eventually, a desperate cry erupted from my mouth.

Clear blue eyes stared at me without saying a word.

Before long, a large cloak was draped over my head.

“This way.”

A low but firm voice whispered in my ear.

The only ray of light that seemed to shine through was over the thick fabric.

[1] 밤새: play on words, the 새 in 밤새 or ‘all night long’ means bird. so lorella is saying that the only figure in the night is night with a flap of its wings which refers to the bird. then she says fortunately there aren’t any human figures nearby (but there was a bird)

RMHM Ch 7 — My Husband’s ‘Legal’ Mistress

Ever since attending my own funeral, I behaved as if I was a crazy woman all day.

I would wake up in the morning with a healthy body and feel happy, then cry myself to sleep at night…

When I got out of bed, I would absentmindedly read the newspapers and gossip tabloids over and over again.

News of me no longer appeared in the Empire Daily.

Not only that, but whenever I had the time, I would take out the card that came with Novian’s handwriting and read it over and over again.

‘Just what in the world was the promise between Noah and Blair?’

Although the message didn’t contain a greeting or closing remark, it still made me feel oddly anxious.

Novian was a man who abided by courtesy, even if it was towards someone who didn’t possess an aristocratic title or came from a humble household.

According to what I knew, there weren’t any friends he disregarded courtesy with either.

“Friends?”

Blair Acacia, whose name wasn’t even worth mentioning in gossip tabloids, was his friend?

Besides, the Novian who had a personality that didn’t allow him to get friendly with women, was friends with Blair?

“Relatives?”

He belonged to royalty.

If they were relatives, Blair would also have to be royalty.

Then, it wouldn’t have been possible for Count Acacia to marry a beautiful young woman whose value was equal to that of the royal family.

“Colleagues?”

Judging by the shocked reactions of the people in the mansion every time I read a newspaper or book, it seems that Blair wasn’t a very intelligent person.

The kind of people that Novian, who graduated as the Academy’s valedictorian, despised the most, was also people who lacked a brain.

The kind of people that Novian, who graduated as the Academy’s valedictorian, despised the most, was also people who lacked a brain.

Just judging from Marge’s attitude, that seemed to act too casually with me, wasn’t that the case?

Marge, the head maid, wasn’t a bad woman, but she wasn’t very courteous either.

It wasn’t to the extent where I found it offensive, since I had already experienced the shrewd and manipulative madis of the Grand Duchy, rather, although she was only a countess, I secretly looked down on the way Marge treated Blair as if she were only her niece.

I slowly approached the mirror and looked at my reflection.

Even from my perspective, Blair was extremely beautiful.

It was due to the fact that she bore such a chilling resemblance to me.

After all, I hadn’t been called ‘the Grand Duchess whom Novian, the Iron Chancellor, fell in love with at first sight’ for nothing.

If it weren’t for my weak body that constantly seemed as if were going to crumble, I would’ve been overflowing with the energy that people my age would’ve had.

It wasn’t because my body had a flaw nor was it because my appearance was lacking.

‘You must have looked stupid.’

tl/n: she’s referring to blair

But that wasn’t the case anymore.

Since albeit only for a short while, I had also attended the academy and had even been prided as the only woman in Ronta who could speak  on equal footing with Novian.

In fact, I could feel that the way the servants in the County looked at me was a bit different from before.

I hadn’t only been acting like a crazy woman over the past few days.

I had instructed for the bedroom that was full of that terrifying pink and the drawing room to be changed slightly and distributed the butler’s work a bit as his workload seemed too heavy.

Marge became more cheerful as the colour pink gradually disappeared from the house whilst colour seemed to return to the old butler’s face.

Contrary to the Grand Duchy’s servants who never tried to interact with me properly, more and more people had gradually started asking me what to do with this that.

It was clear that they too, needed someone to properly manage the house.

Although I wasn’t sure what I would do in the future, when I first started interacting with them, I wondered whether I could get attached to the servants of this mansion.

‘I need to find out, quickly.’

Just what sort of promise was between Blair and Novian?

Novian had personally extended an invite to his vassal’s wife, and even after delivering such a peculiar message, never came to find me.

It bothered me that even after he did something that wasn’t like him, he didn’t show any other suspicious behaviours.

Since he didn’t seem surprised to see this face at the funeral, he clearly must’ve known Blair.

‘If you saw me from up close, would you know that I’m Adrienne?’

I was thrilled with the odd expectation that he would recognize me if he just looked a little closer.

tl/n: omg bruh girlie is so delusional pls #getittogetheradrienne2021

How many years had we spent together?

It was time that surpassed any limit.

I couldn’t wait for Novian, who hadn’t even promised to meet me, to contact me first.

‘I have to go find Noah.’

But how?

Without the seal of Count Acacia, it was impossible for a letter that was sent from me to get past the front door and into the Grand Duchy.

As I strolled through the Count’s simple garden, I paid close attention to whether there was anyone else coming to hand me another note.

Shortly thereafter, a loud noise sounded from nearby as Marge whose face was flushed ran into the garden.

“Gosh, I was wondering where you had gone off to again this time! You should’ve told me where you were going!”

“What is it?”

“The master has returned! He seemed to think that you’d be out instead of in the garden though?”

 “!”

“Since master has finally returned to the mansion after a few months, shouldn’t you hurry up and go see him?”

“…Did he ask to see me?”

“What do you mean? You should still go, even if he didn’t ask to see you. That’s what a married couple is normally like!”

Right, that’s the way it is.

The things I had to do as someone’s wife were still unfamiliar to me.

Count Acacia, who had been away from the mansion, had finally returned after several months…

After hesitating for a while, I nodded and followed Marge to the office on the 3rd floor.

Although the sudden appearance of a new husband was had made me slightly flustered, it might not be such a bad thing.

After all, if you think about it differently, he’s the person who can give me the most information about Blair Acacia right now.

[ / / / ]

Knock knock-.

The door was already open wide enough for it to be embarrassing to knock.

The office was monotonous.

A desolate space with no paintings or vases.

It greatly contrasted with Blair’s bedroom, which was filled with all kinds of beautiful things.

Leaving Marge outside, I cautiously stepped in and saw Count Acacia leaning against a large window next to the desk in the office.

He was standing by the window and looking outside.

Since it was my first time facing Count Acacia ever since I had entered Blair’s body, I was slightly nervous.

“Count.”

“…Countess.”

“You’re back.”

I bowed my head slightly towards the Count who turned his head at the sound of my footsteps.

The feeble Count Acacia bowed slightly to me with a hunched posture.

Then, he sat down naturally on the sofa and beckoned for me to sit down as well.

It was then, when I had let down my guard and relaxed due to the friendly appearance he had shown me.

“Have you met the Grand Duke?”

In an instant, there was silence.

My heart was pounding quickly and cold sweat was seeping out of my hands.

I didn’t answer at once.

Without neither affirming or denying it, I just stared at the Count.

As I was trying to figure out what I should say, his amber eyes which seemed to be looking at a disobedient daughter, swept over me.

The fact that a vassal’s face could be so calm, despite it seeming as though his wife had gone out without even a single maid, and in addition, could even ask if she had gone to meet his master, was extremely bizarre.

“…No.”

I, who had been stiff with confusion and nerves, finally managed to open my mouth.

Then, a short sigh of a voice came from the opposite side.

“Are you not going to keep your promise to the Grand Duke…?”

I felt my heart drop to the floor with a thud.

My whole body stiffened as I sat with a straightened back.

There was no sign of contempt or anger on the face of the Count whom I had just met.

As expected, he asks me about Novian and whether I’ve met him or not.

Badump! Badump! Badump! Badump!

My heart that felt like it had dropped started beating faster.

Blair, who was from a lowly family and may have been a commoner.

And Count Acacia who respects her like that.

A conversation that doesn’t feel as if it were between a couple at all.

And if I’m not mistaken, his face is slightly pale and tired.

‘Like a man who’s scared to death.’

“…What promise?”

Just what was that promise?

Did Novian, who was so careful he didn’t even leave behind his name on the note, tell this vassal know about the promise as well?

The Count looked startled at my words.

And whilst clutching his heart, he stood up feebly and walked to stand in front of me.

Although it was only a short distance, even that much seemed to make him out of breath for a while.

The old vassal whose body was weak, soon knelt in front of me.

“…Count!”

Startled, I tried to help him up, but he opened his mouth faster.

The Count grabbed my knee with his old hand and said desperately.

“Please. Please spare me, Countess!”

 “…!”

“Please, keep your promise. Countess. I don’t want to die a dog’s death when I’m already nearing the end of my life! Please…”

“Please get up, Count!”

“Enough of your delaying, this is the limit already. At my age, other people play poker leisurely, while I’m still struggling to go back and forth between the Grand Duke’s estate and the capital!”

I fell into confusion once again..

A man who begs for his wife to spare his life.

I was just asking what him what that promise was.

It wasn’t that strange of a question.

“Aren’t you aware of the lack of mercy the Grand Duke has? With the Grand Duchess ending up like that, now even the Grand Duke is pressuring me with every passing day. It’s to the extent that even I, with this old body, can clearly see what he wants.”

“I…I’m just curious about what that promise is.”

“If I were to tell that to the Grand Duke, would my neck still remain intact?”

He said as he wrapped his trembling hands around his neck.

Eyes that were filled with fear, as if his neck would be cut off at any moment.

Pale lips that said that his neck was hanging on a single promise.

It wasn’t a light promise such as meeting once to have tea.

I hid my trembling hands and stared at the Count that remained kneeling.

The inside of my mouth was so dry that even saliva couldn’t pass.

“I don’t want to be involved in this anymore. I don’t want to be stuck like this between the two of you. Wasn’t the reason why we had that nonsensical wedding between you and I in the first place, just so you could legally become the Grand Duke’s mistress?”

“!”

My stiff body, as if wondering when it had stiffened up, suddenly relaxed.

At the same time, it felt as if someone had pushed me down a cliff!

Within the chilling feeling that seemed as if the ground beneath my feet had suddenly caved in, the sound of the Count’s constant murmuring couldn’t reach me.

I didn’t have to find Novian in order to confirm what sort of promise we had made.

The figure of my husband, who was grieving in front of my body, passed by me swiftly like a kaleidoscope.

My heart…it hurts.

But then, then…

‘…Yes, that’s right. I, no, Blair is… This Blair is…’

To borrow the words of his vassal, Count Acacia…

This Countess Blair Acacia, was my husband, Novian Trovica’s mistress.

SMCS Ch 2 — I’m a Main Character Candidate?!

「Miss Lorella Mayred.
Congratulations on being nominated as the main character.
Please sell more and more shares, beat the other candidates and become the real hero.
An absolute character who will enjoy eternal happiness in a world that will never go wrong.
That seat is yours!」

A dark hallway with no one in it. A sound that seemed to resemble a scream suddenly resounded from a place no soul could pass.

“…What the hell is this!”

Of course, that scream was mine.

Did the shock make me hallucinate for a moment? Or did the pieces of paper that bastard ripped up earlier get into my eyes?

I rubbed my eyes with the long lace curtains that hung from the window, but nothing changed.

「Total shares sold: 300 shares.」

Unknown characters that were sparkling brightly were fixed at the top of the status window. No matter where I looked, the window continued to follow my gaze.

I went into a state of complete panic and said in a voice of astonishment.

“What the hell do you mean by shares? Why isn’t this window disappearing…!”

It was at that moment.

Suddenly, there was a shuffling sound, then the window disappeared.

“Huh?”

I just stood there and blinked both my eyes. Even then, I rubbed my eyes with both hands as hard as I could in disbelief.

It’s weird if the window remains in front of me, but it’s even weirder if it suddenly disappears. I didn’t know what the hell was going on.

It was only after I had calmed down to some extent that the view of the hallway finally entered my field of vision. Decorative cabinets and luxurious paintings filled the hallway. It was a hallway that wasn’t too far from Periot’s study.

Seeing as I couldn’t even remember walking out of there with my own two feet, it seems as if I was forced out of there by him whilst I was in my panicked state.

However, even when I finally came to my senses, I still had no choice but to stand as if I was nailed to the spot and stare blankly out the window. It was due to the constant dinging that filled my head.

Just what the hell going on earlier?

It was a phenomenon that I had never experienced before, from possessing this body and ending up in this place until now. I’ve never seen a system window appear in a romance fantasy with the Northern Grand Duke!

Since that’s the case, then the last thing I can think of is…

“No way, did this crazy bastard perhaps cast black magic on me?!”

Since that’s the case, then the last thing I can think of is…

“No way, did that crazy bastard perhaps cast black magic on me?!”

Yes, this could be the correct answer.

Since all of this happened the moment I met him.

“I have no intention of getting a divorce. Of course, you’ll never be able to escape from here either.”

A grim voice echoed in my ears.

I got chills down to my spine.

“H-How did he do it?”

I scanned my surroundings first, then turned around in a hurry. Then, I began to scramble down the hallway.

An urgent breath escaped from my gaping mouth.

‘I have to run away quickly…!’

Jesus, this bastard must be a complete psycho!

[ / / / ]

“Hurry, hurry..!”

I urgently searched the closet and took out my bag. It was a relatively generous size as I had bought it when I was contemplating over when I should run away after get married.

But why is the lock so stiff today?

After struggling for a long time, I finally loosened the ring of the bag that was tightly intertwined, and shoved a few clothes into it.

Now the only thing left is…

“Money!”

I hurriedly took out the large storage box I had hidden and placed it on the desk.

Then, the moment I opened it.

“…Just what were you doing just now?”

A cold voice rang in my ears. Both of my hands stopped, as if I was frozen.

“…”

I swallowed my saliva dryly and slowly lifted my head.

Duke Periot was standing in front of the door.

With a stiff face.

“Hic…!”

I was so startled that the breath I was about to let out was suddenly sucked back inside. His expression was so hideous that even his handsome face was buried in his mood.

He looked down at me with no change in his expression and spoke coldly.

“How dare you put something like this in front of me again.”

It was none other than divorce papers that had left Periot’s hand and fluttered to the floor.

“I clearly warned you not to even dream of this.”

What the hell is this? The papers I gave you were already torn to shreds and scattered on the floor. Where did that come from, and why did you come to find me all of a sudden?

My questions didn’t last very long. As soon as his growl was finished, someone outside the room came in behind him.

It was my mother-in-law, Emma, who was currently hanging off his arms and wiping away her tears.

“I, I did everything I could to draw it out, but Lorella is earnestly asking for it…”

…I beg your pardon?

I was confused for a while, but I soon came to understand the situation.

Anyhow, Emma must have gone to find him with the divorce papers after I left Periot’s study.

But since her son is so angry, she must be thinking of throwing all the blame to me for now.

I stared at Emma in bewilderment, but she was desperately avoiding my gaze and pretended not to notice. I secretly stomped my feet.

At that moment, Periot, who had a blue tendon protruding from his temple, suddenly made a declaration out of the blue.

“As of today, this room will be closed.”

“W-What did you say?”

“Since we don’t have any sense of living a married life, it seems like we’re not on the same wavelength. Let’s move into the couple bedroom then.”

Jesus, this guy must be crazy!

“I don’t want to!”

I instinctively stepped back and shouted loudly. I was terrified that he would come into the room at any moment and drag me away.

Unsurprisingly, he trudged inside, disregarding my desperation. His steps were rough, as if he was angry.

Periot pushed the chair in front of me, hard. He had used so much strength that the shaking of the chair’s handle even reached the desk, and it was at that moment.

The storage box that was on the desk suddenly fell to the floor.

Thud!

The lid flew off with a heavy sound. At the same time, something poured out of the sack inside.

It was none other than a shiny gold coin.

“What’s this?”

The light in Periot’s eyes changed in an instant.

“…Did I ever give you this sort of thing?”

His sharp gaze shifted from the gold coin to me, like a veil. His pupils which were as black as obsidian gleamed fiercely. I panicked and stepped back.

It was practically impossible for an ordinary person to own this amount of gold coins. This also included me, who was only a duchess in name.

It was a situation where people who weren’t aware of the context could easily misunderstand it as someone stealing the Duke’s property whilst he was away.

I opened my mouth as quickly as possible before the misunderstanding escalated.

“I’ll explain, I can explain everything! The truth is, the source of this money is…”

That was the moment my gaze met Emma’s.

“It must’ve been the money that was given by the man she met with secretly!”

Suddenly, she uttered an absurd remark.

“What?!”

Although I let out a surprised shout, Emma didn’t care and continued with her blatant lie.

“Periot! I’ll be honest, it happened like this. While you were away, Lorella enjoyed many secret encounters with another man. She even met some man last night in the dark and remote garden.”

Wait, what sort of bullshit is this old fart spouting?!

Whether or not my jaw dropped, she continued to grab her son’s arm and continued speaking in a trembling voice, attempting to be pitiful.

“I can’t tolerate such a dirty woman like that being your wife any longer. H-Hurry up and get divorced before you defile the Chambers name any further!”

Even in the midst of her babbling, she stutters for a moment when our eyes meet. Seeing as she kept looking at me, she seemed to be afraid for it to be known that she was the one that had given me money in order to quietly get divorced.

However,  I couldn’t stand listening to such nonsensical slander any longer either.

“Just what are you talking about? When did I?!”

It sounded so absurd that I almost ran away. I shouted in a loud voice, pointing to the gold coins lying on the floor.

“You personally handed me this sack yesterday, have you gone senile?! You’re talking nonsense!”

“S-Senile?!”

It was at that moment.

Thud!

I turned my head, startled by the sudden loud noise, and saw him with a chair split in half and a shiny long sword in his hand.

The one on the receiving end of the long sword was the suitcase.

The clothes inside it fell to the floor.

“…so you really did try to run away?”

His gaze which was already brutal, was now bright enough to stab someone to death.

While I was nervous and swallowed my saliva dryly, Emma stepped forward and let out a pretentious exclamation.

“Oh my god, Lorella…”

Then, pretending to shed tears, she added one more remark.

“Don’t tell me, you meant to run away with him?”

Although she was pretending to be pitiful, the corners of her lips were slightly raised.

How disadvantageous was this situation? A cold sweat ran down my back unconsciously.

I quickly stepped forward to respond.

“Mother was clearly the one who called me to the study and gave me the money in order for me to leave quietly! T-That’s right! The servant who took me to the study that time can be my witness… Kya!

However, I wasn’t able to finish my sentence.

It was because he had wrapped an arm around my waist and started dragging me off to somewhere recklessly.

“W-What the hell! Let go of me!”

“…another man?”

Although I struggled to get free, he didn’t budge. He just continued to move forward with a stiff face, as if he couldn’t even hear me.

“While I’m away struggling on the battlefield, you’re with another man?”

A voice as cold as ice fell into my ear. It was to the extent that the anger that was clearly conveyed through it gave me goosebumps.

No, wait. No way, don’t tell me you’re seriously believing this right now, Northern Duke?”

It was unbelievable that he would he easily be swayed into believing in that nonsense, but I decided to push that to the back of my mind first.

Since revealing that I’m innocent right now is more urgent than that.

“It’s all a blatant lie!”

“Stay still. Before you get hurt.”

Far from explaining, I was interrupted as soon as I spoke up.

Grrrrk, the sound of grinding teeth was heard. I could feel the heat from his hand as he hugged me to the point of pain.

“Heok!”

“D-Duke…!”

We ran into several people along the way. Not only were there the employees of the mansion, but also some nobles who were about to go home after the banquet had ended.

However, no one was able to stop Periot, who was in a hurry. When they noticed the long sword he was holding firmly, they all just trembled and closed their eyes tightly.

I wonder how long I’ve been dragged like this for. His footsteps finally stopped. Then, I was pushed roughly like I was a burden into the dark space.

“Ah…!”

The sound of the iron door closing with a thud slammed into my ears.

Surprised, I looked around and saw a small room with a single palm-sized window on the wall. Equipped with a bed and a soft sofa.

According to the location, this is clearly the tower behind the mansion, but was there always a room like this here? Why are there… leather straps all over the place? W-What’s with those handcuffs!?

A pair of cold eyes could be seen through the small window in the tightly closed thick iron door.

“Is that why you begged for a divorce like that? Did you want to take the Dukedom’s money and elope with another man?”

The sound of a short laugh, as if he was lost for words could be heard.

“I told you, it’s not! That money was given to me by your mother to ask me to divorce you, and I’ve never met any other man!”

Although I didn’t get goosebumps, I felt a chill and shuddered. I pounded on the iron door and shouted, disregarding the pain my fists were going through.

“Get me out of here! Then we’ll find out who lied!”

“That bastard, where is he hiding right now?”

He’s driving me crazy!

“Hiding, who the hell is hiding?!”

Bam bam!

No matter how many times I hit the iron door, it didn’t budge. I was so frustrated that I even tried kicking it with my feet, but I didn’t stand a chance.

“It won’t be a problem, even if you don’t tell me. Since I will definitely be able to find him.”

“No, can you just…!”

“I’ll cut off that bastard’s head and throw him in here.”

Although his face which had stiffened, had a rare smile on it, he didn’t look happy. Rather, it looked colder than when he was expressionless.

“That will be the only time this door opens.”

It ended with that sentence that was thrown in a gloomy voice. Periot quickly walked away.

“Periot…! I’m telling you to just listen to me for a second!”

I yelled until my throat threatened to burst, but there was no answer. The sound of footsteps gradually faded away, and in the end, only silence came to find me.

“Ugh.”

A groan erupted from my mouth.

Trapped.

I’m really trapped!

“Open the door, I said hurry up and open this door!”

I screamed and slammed the iron gate again with my fist and then with my foot.

Of course, the sturdy door didn’t budge, and all that remained for me was a sharp pain that brought tears to my eyes.

It was so noisy that it would’ve been enough for anyone to come, but not even a single rat could be seen through the small window.

“Hey, you crazy fucker!”

It was at that moment, when a thud resounded once again and I spat out another string of curse words.

Ding-dong!

A clear and bright sound came to my ears.

「Mr ‘…right?’ has bought your shares again.
100.
200.
300…」

The characters began to rise so quickly I didn’t even have time to read them.

“W-What?”

I blinked both eyes quickly and shouted.

“It’s too fast!”

Then, the numbers that were rising crazily stopped for a moment, then again, ding-dong! A message appeared with the sound.

「Mr ‘That bastard isn’t the male lead, right?’ is furious and is throwing you all the coins.」

「The sale of 700 shares has been completed. Accumulated a total of 1000 weeks.」

 「New record!」

Again. This window popped up again!

I read every single letter with my eyes wide open, lest the screen disappear before I finished reading.

「As a reward, two bonus cookies have been baked. Would you like to receive your first cookie?
1. Yes.
2. No.」

A cookie you say? What sort of cookie did you suddenly bake?

“What the hell is that!”

I shouted into the air, but instead of an answer, only the same message continued to flash.

「Would you like to receive your first cookie?
1. Yes.
2. No.」

Although I don’t know what it is, first of all, it’s a bonus, right? I nodded my head vigorously.

“I want to get it! I’ll take it!”

Then, a shining stick appeared along with the words ‘cookie payment completed’.

“Huh…?”

Despite not knowing what it was, there seemed to be a time limit. The golden gauge that filled the inside was decreasing rapidly.

“H-How am I supposed to use this?”

Momentarily flustered, I turned around and scanned my surroundings. Then, I accidentally stumbled and instinctively grabbed onto the iron door with both hands.

It was at that moment.

With a pop! my body suddenly swung forward.

“Ack!”

Thud!

With a loud groan, the iron door fell to the floor like a piece of paper.

An iron door that didn’t even budge, no matter how many times I hit it.

「The first cookie has been used.」

Whilst I staggered and fell to the floor, a different message was added before my eyes.

「Escape from the Northern Duke’s confinement.」

Unlike the others, the frame for this one was shining as bright as a Christmas tree.

IBOMLEW Ch 3 — Weren’t You Prepared For This? (2)

The preparations for the cultural festival that would be held in three days were almost complete.

I also sent invitations to various noble households, but fortunately, everyone said they were willing to come.

And even the Emperor and Empress had said that they would attend, so what could be better than this!

I will show the whole world that Irwen Carlisle is an amiable person, not a malicious wife..

I was busy writing a thank-you letter in the room when several servants filtered in and announced something.

“Madam, we have finished setting up the stage in the banquet hall. The piano was covered with a large cloth earlier in order to prevent the dust from settling on it.”

“Alright. I’m grateful towards you all.”

Although I was only saying it because I was truly grateful, the servants were still startled and all left the room.

It seemed as if they were still not used to my changed persona.

Mrs Tilly ran in hastily.

“Madam, the dress you ordered a few days ago has arrived. Should I bring it to your room?”

“Yes, then please do so.”

“Then, please wait for me in your undergarments. You’ll be able to try it on soon. I’ll fix it for you right away if it happens to be too tight or too loose.”

“Thank you, Mrs Tilly.”

“…I should be more thankful, madam.”

Although I think I’ve already said the words ‘thank you’ more than 300 times so far, it seems like Mrs Tilly still isn’t used to it.

Mrs Tilly bowed her head as if she was bewildered, easily helping me take off my dress and left.

Mrs Tilly bowed her head as if she was bewildered, easily helping me take off my dress and left.

As soon as she left, I began to take off my clothes.

I had already gotten used to waiting to be served without any clothes on.

Before I knew it, there was only a white camisole remaining on my body.

I looked at myself in front of the large mirror with my back to the door.

Although it’s embarrassing to say, I’ll never get tired of seeing my reflection, no matter how many times I do it.

This beauty with white skin that contrasted even more with her wavy black hair that stretched to her waist.

A perfect figure that had curves in all the right places.

It’s absolutely perfect.

As I was mesmerised by my reflection in the mirror, someone knocked on the door.

“Come in.” I said without taking my eyes off the mirror.

Creak

A seemingly large figure appeared in the mirror.

The door opened as Fervin came into my room.

“Irwen.”

I turned around.

In his hand was the simple white dress I ordered.

Fervin had just returned from the imperial palace, wearing the same black uniform he had worn in the morning.

My gaze moved to his pale face.

I wasn’t sure how many weeks it had been since I had seen his face.

His face, which I had not seen in a long time, had become even more handsome.

His cheeks that were slightly sharper, a tall nose, and his even more piercing green eyes.

He stared blankly at my attire. No, rather he was probably just looking at my bare skin that was exposed in the thin camisole.

His gaze slowly descended downwards, from my face to my neckline, collarbone, then breasts.

I was so flustered that I didn’t even realize that his own face was gradually turning redder and he was even coughing slightly.

I hurriedly covered my body with both arms and pointed towards the door with my chin.

“Isn’t it impolite for you to come in before I’m appropriately dressed?”

“As your husband, I think it’s alright for me to break this level of courtesy.”

“Even if you’re my husband, etiquette is still etiquette regardless.”

“Since Mrs Tilly is always by your side, this was the only time for us to be alone. I can’t grab you whilst you’re sleeping and talk to you either.”

I had no choice but to agree with Fervin’s words.

After waking up, it’s true that Mrs Tilly was always by my side whilst I was still getting used to and learning about the mansion’s various duties.

Fervin licked his red lips as he nodded, as if to continue speaking.

“It’s been years since the Carlisle Dukedom was thrown into a frenzy due to an event. However, there’s something I’m curious about.”

He draped the white dress he was holding over the chair next to the dressing table.

He placed his hand on the chair and ran a hand through the hair that was falling onto his forehead.

The only colour on his pale face was on his lips which were red as if he had bitten an apple.

With his tall body which was over 180 centimeters leaning on the chair, he turned his head to the window.

As the setting sun fell languidly on his face, it was as if color had returned to his sculpted face.

Truly, a masterpiece is a masterpiece.

In the original story, he wasn’t called the most handsome man in the empire for nothing.

Being alone in a room with him was so nerve wracking that I felt like dying, but the moment I set my eyes on his handsome face, I found that I couldn’t take my eyes off him.

He, who was constantly biting his lip.

As if it was stuffy, he neatly unbuttoned the button that had been covering his neck.

The wind revealed his collarbone, which was trembling due to his intense emotions.

“What the hell are you…”

After licking his lips for a moment, Fervin came one step closer to me.

I unconsciously gulped, my throat dry.

“Irwen, why are you doing something you don’t normally do? Is this because you want to get along with me?”

“I’m not, getting along with you, rather than that kind of nonsense…”

“That kind of nonsense?”

He suddenly fixed his piercing eyes on me, as if he was angry.

Before I could properly grasp the situation, he intercepted my words before I could speak.

“I just don’t know why you are doing this. There was simply no need for you to host the cultural festival. I could just push it onto the Marchioness of Celestine like before…”

“I said that I would fulfil my official duties as the Duchess. I’m just upholding my own responsibilities, so I’m not sure why you’re talking like this. By any chance, did you perhaps prefer for me to go back to the old days, not working and just acting like an idiot? You have extremely weird tastes.”

After speaking so confidently, I slowly stepped backwards.

I saw Fervin wipe his face, as if he was shocked by my words.

I thought that it would be safe for me to hide myself in the bed with a large veil, so I quickly took a step back.

As I quickly backed away to avoid him approaching me, suddenly, my leg was caught on the edge of the bed.

At the same time, as Fervin reached out towards me as I fell backwards, my field of view was suddenly reversed in an instant.

“Ah!”

The moment I collapsed with my back on a cozy bed.

A large shadow was cast over my body as Fervin reached out towards me.

I could feel a man’s warmth and weight on my body.

His face suddenly came closer to mine.

His gaze flickered as if wandering, and then  met my eyes, as if he had made a decision.

“I think you’ve misunderstood. I don’t have weird preferences.”

“You like heavy makeup more than a bare face, I told you I was going to fulfill my duties as a Duchess but you told me not to. And get up, you’re heavy.”

Fervin got up as soon as I gently pushed his chest.

Although it wasn’t as if he was was putting pressure on my body, it was still a posture that used both his arms and legs to cage me in.

When I looked at him with a gaze that seemed to ask why he was doing this, his eyes shook wildly.

“If I don’t do this, you’ll avoid me, just like before.”

Seeing as his own face was burning red, it seemed as if he had unconsciously said it without meaning to.

The waves lurched, as if a stone had been thrown into a still pond.

Why are you making that sort of face, you hate me anyways.

I swallowed my trembling voice and responded calmly.

“Well, I don’t have any expectations, so I don’t think it’ll be a problem if I avoid you.”

He let out a heavy sigh.

“You really don’t know anything. It’s troublesome, to I think that I’ve been hiding my heart yet you have no expectations.”

“That’s why I’m going to live up to your expectations. I have no idea why you’re dissatisfied with how I’ve acted as the Duchess.”

“You really don’t know me. Do you really not know what I expect from you?”

His eyes that seemed to say, ‘Of course you wouldn’t know’, stared into mine fiercely as he let out a languid breath.

At that moment, he buried his lips deeply into my neck.

As if he was biting an apple he rubbed his lips against my neck, then slowly raised his face.

For a moment, I almost fell for him as he looked seductively at me with his sculpted face. I frowned, grabbing his collar and meeting his eyes.

I could see that the neat uniform that was wrinkled from my grasp.

“Why are you doing this all of a sudden?”

Fervin, who was staring at me.

An enchanting scent grazed his nose as he lowered his head.

As I met those green eyes that were staring at me, my heart started to pound even more uncontrollably.

As my gaze descended from his eyes to his lips, a low and deep voice suddenly came out.

“You’re fulfilling the official duties of the Duchess. Wasn’t this what you were ultimately trying to achieve under the pretext of your duties?”
