IBOMLEW Ch 3 — Weren’t You Prepared For This? (1)

In the following days, I sent news to Marquis Celestine, who was going to hold the cultural festival on my behalf, that I would be holding the festival this time.

Marianne, who had delivered my letter to her herself, had said that she had asked her if what she had delivered was really true, almost ten times.

Marianne’s face, which conveyed her response, was flushed to the core.

“Everyone is very interested in madam’s sudden transformation. It’s not a bad feeling, rather, is this the feeling of having everyone’s innocent curiosity?”

“But they don’t have to be curious to that extent, it’s burdensome.”

“All of high society already has their eyes on you, madam.”

As expected, my sudden change had become a point of interest within high society.

Everyone must have become curious after hearing that the Duchess, who only hid within the mansion and had never made an appearance, was finally involving herself in social affairs.

And whether or not it was because the servants in our mansion were aware of my sudden change and had spread rumours, numerous party invitations from aristocrats I wasn’t familiar with came flying in.

It seemed that my reputation outside was gradually rising, not to mention the good response of the servants in the mansion.

I was suddenly curious about what Fervin thought about my sudden change.

Has my change elicited a positive response from him? Does he see me in a more positive light now?

However, in order to see his response, we had to meet each other first.

I was completely unable to see Fervin at home.

As the Emperor’s right-hand man, he was always called to the palace when something important came up, and after the last dinner I had with him, he did not even have his dinner at home.

Even though I took a lot of afternoon naps, I would always open my eyes to find myself in my bed, even if I dozed off in front of the porch, trying to wait for him.

Last night, although I squatted down on the stairs in front of the front door and waited for him until late into the night, I eventually fell asleep without even seeing him.

In the cozy bed, as soon as I opened my eyes in the late morning, only a sigh of ‘I failed again’ came out of my mouth.

“Madam, please stop waiting at the front door all night. It isn’t good for your body.”

Mrs Tilly, who comes to wake me up as soon as its morning, says this every time.

Under her care, I started to busily prepare to get up and asked her.

“How is his mood these days? Does it seem as if he still hates me?”

Under her care, I started to busily prepare to get up and asked her.

“How is his mood these days? Does it seem as if he still hates me?”

Mrs. Tilly’s lip curled with a strange expression on her face.

As if her head was filled with words she wanted to say, all kinds of expressions flashed across her face.

Thus, she carefully spoke up.

“I think…he said to stop trying since it would all be in vain…”

I bit my lip when I heard what Mrs Tilly reported, acting as if it was a shame.

“Looks like I’ll have to try harder.”

“Madam, in my opinion, it’ll still work out, even if we don’t use this sort of method. I’m sure the master has already… “

As soon as her eyes met mine, Mrs Tilly gasped and closed her mouth.

Although she had an expression that looked as if she was trying to swallow the words she wanted to say, as if she had just received an order from someone, she did not seem to have any intention of revealing it.

But I guess I can still ask a few leading questions. 1

“I understand. Well, then please let him know that I won’t linger around in front of him anymore. He won’t see me around him like before.”

“I don’t think that’s what he meant, madam.”

“He told me to stop trying since it would all be in vain.”

Mrs Tilly’s face seemed to get paler and paler the more she heard my words.

In the end, she brought up another subject, as if she couldn’t win.

“Since he’ll be coming back late all week this week, it’ll be no use, no matter how long you wait for him.”

“Then, it seems like all my hard work thus far was of no use.”

“Madam, do you really not know the reason why you’re able to fall asleep outside, then wake up in your bed the next morning?”

Mrs. Tilly interrupted me like she was frustrated, when I replied, “The butler, Alfred, must have moved me.”

“It was the master who held madam in his arms and put you in bed every time. He said that madam couldn’t be left on the cold floor for too long, and couldn’t leave madam in the hands of other people, even if he always got off work late at night.”

The unexpected report that I never could have thought to be true made me suspicious and wonder whether Mrs Tilly was lying or not.

But it didn’t seem as if Mrs Tilly, who was looking at me with such a clear conscience, was lying.

Even if it was true, it was truly strange.

In the first place, didn’t Fervin hate me?

You didn’t want to get involved with me, did you?

Then why are you treating me like this behind my back?

[ / / / ]

The luxurious Imperial Palace.

Fervin and the Emperor, who were busy handling various documents on the marble table, sat face to face.

The Emperor, who was supporting his chin with his hand and staring at him, made a snapping sound with his fingers.

Pervin didn’t pay him any attention and kept playing with his quill pen.

In the end, the Emperor was the first to open his mouth and speak.

“I heard that there’s been an interesting rumour going around recently. It’s the first time that the Duchess of Carlisle’s name has been heard so much within high society. Did you know about it?”

“Since they’ve already made such an uproar about it, is it possible for me not to know?”

Fervin recalled the countless times people had been talking behind their backs over the past few days.

Rumours of ‘Irwen’ that came from various social gatherings had long been spread throughout the Imperial Palace.

“Have you heard the news about the Duchess of Carlisle? Up until now, the cultural festival had been handed over to the Marquis of Celestine to host, but this time, the Duchess said that she’d be the one hosting the cultural festival herself this time!”

“That’s not the only thing. According to the servants working in the Duke’s residence, the Duchess’ terrible swearing has stopped, and most important of all, the harsh attitude that was akin to a stab has changed to an elegant and graceful one.”

“Although I did hear that she woke up after falling, what’s gone wrong with her head since then?”

“Rumour has it that there’s been a change in appearance as well. They say that her face itself has changed, but what sort of nonsense, what does that even mean…?”

“If it’s this sort of change, I’d gladly welcome it. I can’t wait to hurry up and attend the cultural festival the Duke of Carlisle is hosting this time. Since then, I’ll be able to see the Duchess in person with my own two eyes.”

“Above all, I’m curious about what her husband, His Highness the Duke of Carlisle, thinks of all this. When I saw him at the palace last time, although I asked him, he didn’t even say anything.”

The rumours about Irwen’s transformation always ended with the question of what her husband, the Duke of Carlisle, thought of all this.

Every time that happened, Fervin would think like this.

Why were they curious about how he felt? He himself didn’t even know what his true feelings were.

No, to be precise, he didn’t want to reveal his own true feelings that were shaking.

“Fervin. The situation regarding the Esteemed Young Lady of Verma has changed quite a bit, right? Should I call her a loving wife instead of a wicked one now? I heard that the swearing has stopped too now? And I also heard that she waits at the front door every night just for you?”

The Emperor tilted his head, full of laughter.

Fervin unconsciously fiddled with his wedding ring that was on his left ring finger.

What a strange woman.

His wife, Irwen, seems to have completely changed ever since she woke up.

Although those cherry-like lips had only uttered vicious curses in the past, now flowery words started to spill forth from them.

She, who always exuded an ugly aura and wore heavy makeup whilst shouting a ferocious “I’ll kill you if you touch me!”, was now dozing off at the front door every night.

It was always her, sitting on the stairs in front of the mansion entrance, dozing off with her mouth slightly open.

So every time, he would personally pick Irwen up and move her to her bedroom.

Somehow, unbeknownst to him, when did it become not alright for a servant to move her with their own hands?

When it got busy at work, why did he bother to ride a horse back to the mansion just to repeat the tiring act of carrying her to bed and then going back to the palace again?

Perhaps it’s because he doesn’t want others to see the way she looks when she’s dead asleep in his embrace, pouting as she chews her lips.

Or maybe it’s because he doesn’t want to show anyone her disheveled appearance and her seductive lips that open slightly whenever she lies on the bed.

Fervin’s face gradually becomes redder once he recalls Irwen’s past actions.

He didn’t know why he was acting like this.

Is this a new type of method you thought of to torment me? Or is it really… the person itself that has changed?

The Emperor who was watching him from the side, stuck out his tongue, as if he was in disbelief.

“Your expressions are changing very drastically. Seriously, it’s not like you’re a boy in love.”

Although they had been together for many years already, it was still surprising to see Fervin, who was like his own sibling, display such rarely seen behaviour.

However, it was neither a strange nor new face that he was seeing for the first time.

A few years ago, the Emperor had seen this sort of face on Fervin.

Even on the day he first met the Esteemed Young Lady of Verma, Fervin also looked as if he was at a loss like this.

Embarrassed by his own disconcertingly skinny build, the Emperor spoke lightly to him.

“I heard that the cultural festival that was going to be hosted at the residence of Marquess Celestine was going to be held at your house this time.”

“So you’ve heard.”

“That’s why…”

The Emperor spoke, acting as if what he had said was nothing important, but his eyes were fixed on him with a particularly fervent look.

“I’ve also decided to attend. Of course, the Empress will also be accompanying me.”

“Your Majesty!”

An unscheduled visit by the Emperor.

In particular, it is a great honor and courtesy for the Emperor to visit somewhere other than the Imperial Palace.

Of course, to the Emperor, who regarded Fervin as a friend who was closer to that of a brother, this situation was not beyond him.

The Emperor, who often visited the Duke of Carlisle’s residence when he was still a bachelor prince, had never frequented the residence after Fervin’s marriage.

He was worried that he might interfere with Fervin’s marriage, and upset his wife, Irwen’s, unusual temper, which he had heard so much about.

Fervin’s sharp green eyes met the Emperor’s ones which were filled with mischief.

The Emperor merely shrugged his shoulders and replied back.

“What discourtesy, I’m just curious about how that Esteemed Young Lady of Verma has changed. More specifically, isn’t this cultural festival going to be her first time organising an event herself?”

“Irwen could be discourteous. She was born and raised in a foreign country, didn’t participate in any high society events after marriage and only stayed within our mansion, so she might not have appropriate palace etiquette and may show discourtesy.”

“Well, I think I’ll be able to look forward to it. It’s standard practice to hire the best pianist, but apparently she’s also prepared the best song as well.”

“….”

Fervin had a strange expression on his face that seemed to say it was impossible.

And before long, he started to resent the fact that he knew less of this information than the Emperor.

Why didn’t Mrs Tilly tell him these things? No way, did she perhaps already swear her allegiance to Irwen?

The light in the Emperor’s eyes sparkled as he looked at Fervin, as if he were a strange being.

“Wait, don’t tell me the husband who lives in the same house as her knows less than the general public?”

“…Sorry.”

“What sorry, you should apologise to your wife instead!”

“It doesn’t seem like that. Although I’m not sure why Irwen is doing this now, she is definitely fickle.”

“Hey, Fervin! Surely that’s not it.”

The Emperor, who is a self-proclaimed expert on a woman’s feelings, proudly gives out bold advice.

“This is your wife trying to treat you better from now on and trying to reconcile with you. How fortunate is it that she’s finally settled down and not swearing and spitting venomous words out all the time? God has heard your prayers.”

“…”

The Emperor shows him a smile full of anticipation.

“Then, good luck, Fervin. Did you perhaps know? If a child with blood from both the House of Verma and House of Carlisle. It’ll be a blessing, both nationally and diplomatically. Of course our ties will be further cemented and strengthened…”

Fervin, who was quietly listening to the Emperor’s excited words, blinked silently.

He was fiddling with the wedding ring on his left hand.

Although he felt anxious, he felt complicated on the inside at the same time.

He was still contemplating over how to accept his wife’s attempt at opening his tightly locked heart wide open.

TVPWTLGH Ch 6

“Putting the bell directly on the oven is better than putting the hourglass on it. Adding a function that can stop the oven automatically when the time runs out is also good.”

“No, you can’t. It takes a lot of money to turn the oven on again. That’s why we keep the oven running constantly all year for 24 hours a day at the palace.”

“Aha.”

“You don’t have to pretend you understand what I’m saying when you don’t.”

Although Pavel said it on purpose, the girl just laughs.

As if she understood but just couldn’t be bothered to deal with it.

Pavel’s expression became slightly distorted.

In the meantime, the sound of the hourglass announcing the end of the eight minutes sounded.

Pavel, who had been nervous about the sweet smell that had been constantly rising from the oven for a while, hurriedly took out the dough he had put in the oven earlier.

The pitch black cake inside the white ceramic bowl was nicely split and revealed a crack.

A sweet and bitter scent tickled the tip of his nose.

“W-Wow…”

Fortunately, before Pavel could let out a small exclamation unconsciously, the girl exhaled a gasp of surprise, saving his reputation.

A sweet and bitter scent tickled the tip of his nose.

“W-Wow…”

Fortunately, before Pavel could let out a small exclamation unconsciously, the girl exhaled a gasp of surprise, saving his reputation.

“What…what is it, you chestnut sized brat? Why am you so surprised when you’re the one who made it?”

“It’s my first time making it.”

“…your first time?”

The girl replied excitedly to Pavel’s question, unable to take her eyes off the finished cake.

“My family’s extremely poor, so…I’ve never seen sugar or cream in real life before.”

At that moment, Pavel suddenly forgot what he was about to say.

The clothes the girl was wearing were very expensive, so he didn’t think that she would have that sort of background.

However, once you entered the palace, those sort of clothes could be obtained with something as small as a trick.

Regardless of how you lived before that.

But at the same time, another fact came to mind .

‘If this is your first time seeing sugar or cream, how are you able to make such plausible snacks in one go…?’

Then the girl suddenly stepped down from the stool and ran further into the kitchen.

“H-Hey…where are you going?”

“This!”

What the girl had found from the corner was the stalk of a herb with green leaves, around the size of a child’s fingernail.

“What is that, what are you going to do with it?”

The girl cut off the leaves and placed them one by one on top of the finished fondant au chocolat.1

The sight of a dark coloured cake in a white ceramic bowl with a light green leaf on top was already extremely pleasing to the eye.

A groan flowed out of Pavel’s mouth as he tried to swallow his admiration.

Now that it had been baked and decorated nicely, it was time to try it.

Both the girl and Pavel quickly grabbed their spoons.

“Pavel’s also trying it?”

“Everything that comes out of my kitchen has to go through my mouth.”

“Pavel, no one is taking anything from the kitchen. You don’t have to be so vigilant.”

The silent Pavel waited a little while for the hot bowl to cool down before inserting his spoon into the cake.

Although the outside was crispy enough to crack a little, the spoon gently shoved through the gap, pushing out a sauce that flowed out thickly.

“What, has it not finished cooking?”

“Haa, it’s supposed to be creamy like this.”

The girl didn’t sound like she was lying.

Not waiting for Pavel’s response, the girl took a short breath and pushed the spoon into her mouth.

“Mmm…”

Asha closed her eyes and immersed herself in her emotions for a moment.

It has been a long time since she has last eaten sweets with such generous amounts of sugar and butter.

Even before she was reincarnated, she had hardly ever made sweets properly. She didn’t have the time to make them, nor the money to buy them either.

Asha made a face, as if she was falling apart for a moment before quickly adding another spoonful into her mouth.

‘If only I had one cup of coffee with this, then it’d be perfect.’

She wondered whether it was because it had been made with the palace’s quality ingredients, since despite being made with her clumsy skills, the cake made her feel as if she was melting after taking just one bite of it.

It was way too delicious.

‘Was the flavour a little stimulating because of my extremely poor diet? Also, I should’ve added a little more cream.’

This time, the portion of chocolate used had a higher content of cacao and a stronger bitter flavour, but the bitter taste turned out extremely well in the finished product.

But it also wouldn’t be a bad idea to make it a little more subtle and sweeter.

And when she looked up after emptying out half of her fondant au chocolat that she had made for the first time, Pavel was wearing a completely shocked expression on his face.

The teaspoon and fondant au chocolat in his large hand made him almost like a stuffed toy, with orange particles fluttering behind him like a halo.

Asha rubbed her eyes.

‘W-What, what is that?’

“This…What did you say this was called?”

 “Huh? Oh, that… “

Asha who was hesitating for a while, decided that she’d go out shamelessly since he was someone who she would never see again anyways.

“Okay! Let’s call it Pavel Chocolate.”

“What did you say, you chestnut sized thing?”

“Anyways, I was the one who made it in the first place so I’ll call it whatever I want to. Since Pavel helped me make it, I’ll give it the name Pavel.”

“Don’t just slap the name of the imperial head chef anywhere!”

Asha acted as if she couldn’t hear him and took another bite of the cake.

Her heart, which had been wandering all day today, was warmed by the warm fondant au chocolat which she had just shoved into her mouth.

Asha, whose cheeks were still red from the residual heat of the oven, and had eaten half the cake, looked at Pavel with a desperate expression.

Pavel stepped back with a huff.

“What now?”

“Milk, or something cold.”

“Ah…”

Hot chocolate cake and cold white milk.

As if he could imagine the harmony between them just from her words, Pavel silently poured the milk into the glass.

There were two glasses.

Asha cleanly emptied the bowl of chocolate cake without saying a word, and was momentarily drunk on the taste of it.

“…but do you not have any fruit?”

“This is the kitchen of His Highness, the Crown Prince. How could there not be such a thing? Of course it’s in the fruits and vegetables storage room.”

“Is there an orange in there?”

“Of course there is. What are you going to do with that…”

Pavel, who had been talking up to that point, quickly shut his mouth.

As he recalled the fruity taste of the bittersweet chocolate cake with the right balance of sweetness and acidity, his mouth immediately started watering.

“…what are you going to do?”

“Wouldn’t it be even more delicious if we made this cake with sugar that had been soaked in orange peels for a little while?”

“…!”

Pavel and Asha made eye contact and simultaneously ran towards the cold storage room.

“Chef Marka! I need to take snacks to His Majesty the Emperor right now…Head Chef?”

The servant who had run so much he was out of breath, stood in the empty kitchen where a sweet smell drifted out from the open oven and looked around.

There was an urgent order from the top to bring a snack right away, but the chef was nowhere to be found, and only four finished cupcakes were laid out neatly.

It seemed like it had just been baked, the steam still rising from it.

“Wow, Head Chef. You’ve already prepared it, haven’t you? Thank goodness.”

There were even green leaves on top of the brown cake that was dark enough to look black, acting as a garnish.

As he got closer and smelled the fragrance, a sweet, and somehow bitter and antique scent came up.

Although it was the first cake he had ever seen such a cake, the servant still put two cakes onto his tray without a trace of suspicion.

The servant, who was agonising over what to bring for a drink, saw two empty cake bowls and half a jug of milk, and immediately filled the glass with milk.

And that’s how the servant left the kitchen faster than he came.

[ / / / ]

Alexei’s grandfather, Emperor Mikhail, skimmed through the report with a noble gesture that showed the traces of time on him.

In the meantime, Alexei, who had finished answering the Emperor’s question, was silently awaiting his evaluation.

“The war against the Noctis Elves is about to end. Karnov Neustadter has worked hard.”

The Emperor recalled the boy who was now fifteen years old, yet he remembered the cold purple eyes which he had thought could not possibly belong to a boy of his age.

When that boy had signed a contract with the Spirit of Death, he had also taken on a huge weight in order to maintain the balance.

And that balancing complementary weight was now with the grandson in front of him.

“But, I do recall there being a slave amongst the people Karnov saved. And you’ve asked me to absolve that slave’s sins.”

The Emperor tilted his head and asked.

Alexei answered in a soft and unwavering voice.

“He is only a child who has just turned ten years old. Although the sins of his parents are severe, as a servant of Igor Akinfeev, all he did was embroider as he was ordered.”

“Are you saying it is not a sin to be ignorant of the fact that what he was told to embroider were sentences that were calling for ‘darkness’?”

“…But ignorance is not the business of the common people, but the business of the ruler, right?”

“That ignorance created embroidery that caused the death of three hundred of my people. Who is going to pay for that?”

“The thing that kills is not a sword but the will of a man. Please punish that person.”

“An animal that bites a person is slaughtered, and a knife that pierces a person is broken and melted in a furnace.”

Alexei’s smile remained undisturbed, however, there were also no words that came out of his mouth.

The old emperor who watched on silently, suddenly opened his mouth, as if he was going to laugh.

“Even if you save that lowlife, do you think they will show you any gratitude or succumb to your mercy?”

“I didn’t think of that sort of thing. That lowlife’s parents have already died for their ignorance, and you’ve already killed Igor Akinfeev, who was the one who ordered it, and torn off his limbs.”

“So what are you going to achieve by saving that little one?”

“Pardon?”

The Emperor tilted his chin.

“The parents are the ones who were sentenced to death for bringing ‘darkness’ and secretly communicating with the Noctis Elves. That child will no longer be able to live in the North since none of the government officials would want to use him as a slave either.”

“…!”

“Even if you put him in an orphanage, the orphans would stone him to death, and there would be no parents anywhere in the world who would accept him for adoption, so what if you save him? He’ll starve to death on the street regardless.”

“…”

The words of the old Emperor were too apathetic, and came to be sour.

Whilst Alexei was silent for a moment, the old Emperor merely shrugged and continued.

“Alright. Wasn’t that slave ten years old? Yuriel’s daughter is also ten years old now. Since they’re the same age, it’ll be easy for them to get along.”

“…Grandfa…Your Majesty.”

“Although Yuriel’s daughter looked small and weak, she looked clever, so we’l leave that child in the Imperial Palace, and give the slave to Yuriel’s daughter to raise. That lowlife said he would especially determined to become a villain and take revenge, so he might even kill Yuriel’s daughter.”

For the first time, that smile that seemed as if were a mask faded from Alexei’s face, and his blue eyes froze.

With a sparkle of light in his eyes that resembled his grandson’s, the old Emperor met his grandson’s gaze.

IWBMTL Ch 208

A sharp silence that seemed as if it were about to explode pierced the room.

Sushou remained calm, even in front of Lavini’s face that was gradually becoming colder.

He lifted his teacup which he had put down again and even drank a few more sips of the tea.

Although the body that filled the chair was large, the handling of the teacup was quite delicate.

“Just what…are you saying?”

Lavini’s voice trembled.

She was furious.

The face that was smiling beautifully, like a smooth porcelain mask, was gradually cracking due her anger.

“It’s exactly like I’ve said.”

The Sushou Patriarch answered while slowly lowering his hand down onto his bad knee.

It was a hand that belonged to a knight who had many scars.

“The deadline for the funds lent out to the Angenas by Sushou has already passed. So, if you aren’t able to return that money right away, we’ll have to seize the collateral.”

“Hey, Patriarch Sushou!”

Eventually, a loud shout burst out from the Empress.

The smile that tried hard to seem calm finally collapsed with a crash.

“You want me to return the money right now?! Aren’t you also aware of how impossible your condition is?”

“Have I said anything that was incorrect, Your Majesty the Empress?”

Chanton Sushou had an odd look on his face.

His twisted mouth made it hard to determine whether he was angry or smiling.

Seeing the face he had made, Lavini’s anger within her exploded.

“Are you pretending to be me right now?”

“Of course not.”

“If not, then what? What are you trying to do, getting me to suddenly repay you such a large sum of money at a time like this?!”

“I know. Borrowing such a large amount of money yet feeling so at ease, how strange.”

Finally, the Patriarch of Sushou let out a dry laugh and smirked.

But the gaze in his eyes was as thin as the surface of ice.

“Since you’ve borrowed the money, it’s natural that you now have to pay it back.”

Empress Lavini glared at the Chanton in front of her.

She was so angry that she had reached the point where her shoulders were shaking every time she took a breath.

However, she couldn’t even scream according to her personality.

Because it was true that the Angenas had borrowed money from Sushou using their estates and land as the collateral, and subsequently, the hilt of the sword was rightfully held by Sushou.

The Empress, who had been glaring at Chanton Sushou for a long time, finally opened her mouth.

“Is the South so insufficient for you to covet the West as well? Representing both regions isn’t allowed, so the West will still be under the jurisdiction of Angenas.”

“I’m already aware of that.”

“And yet you’re still greedy for our land. Aren’t you being overly ambitious right now?”

“That could be possible.”

The Patriarch of Sushou said languidly, as if he was stretching.

“But, of course, I wouldn’t be the only one who has a lot of greed. Wouldn’t the Angenas, the ones who seized someone else’s property, also have a lot of greed?”

“Patriarch Sushou!”

Her body trembled at the insults that were thrown directly in her face.

Her nails dug painfully into her palm as she clenched her fists.

However, thanks to the pain, Lavini regained her rationality.

Then, she took a deep breath whilst calmly grasping the situation.

“Patriarch Sushou.”

“Yes, please continue.”

“If you’re trying to pretend to be me, you’ll regret it.”

“I’ve already said it a while earlier, Your Majesty the Empress. Sushou is not trying to replace Angenas. I’m just claiming the accumulated debt.”

“…then I’ll arrange for the funds to be repaid within this month. If we’re not able to by then, I’ll hand over the deeds to the land.”

Empress Lavini put down all of her pride and suggested.

However, Patriarch Sushou shook his head.

“I’m sorry. Actually, the deadline stated in the contract is already three days overdue. I’ve already waited for the past three days, so I came here in order to get the deeds to the land today.”

“There’s no such law…!”

“Or should we ask His Majesty the Emperor to mediate?”

Sushou interrupted the Empress and asked.

It was a method that was occasionally used when conflicts between nobles escalated.

Just like it did with Angenas and Brown, a long time ago.

It was normally a suggestion that was welcomed with open arms.

But Empress Lavini’s complexion was still as dark as it was before.

Because it was the excessively fickle Emperor Yovanes.

She did not know what kind of ruling he would make if he was asked to solve such a problem, especially in a situation where because of Astana, he was in such a foul temper.

Perhaps he might have asked Angenas to spit out something else on top of their fief as collateral.

Clenching her teeth together, Empress Lavini rose from her seat and opened the safe.

It contained the deeds to the various areas under the jurisdiction of Angenas.

Lavini’s fingertips trembled as she pulled out the deeds from among the pile to the places that were stated in the contract.

However, when she returned to her seat with the deeds to the land, her expression had already returned to normal.

Before she handed over the deeds, Empress Lavini spoke.

“You already said you wouldn’t pretend to be me.”

“That’s right.”

“Then, please make sure you attend tomorrow’s noble meeting. And what we’ve done today is not to leave your mouth. Don’t tell anyone.”

Now, it was more important than ever for Angenas to show an unshakeable and solid appearance.

“Hmm.”

Patriarch Sushou, who seemed to agonise over her request for a while, nodded shortly after.

“I’ll do that then.”

“Also, you’ll return the deeds to our fief if we repay the amount of money we borrowed, right?”

“That’s quite difficult. We’ve already made plans for the estates in the west.”

“You’d better put aside those plans, since we’ll get that money as soon as possible.”

Empress Lavini’s words and scornful laughter elicited a rare laugh from Patriarch Sushou, who seldom did so.

Then, while accepting the bundle of documents that the Empress was offering to him, he told her.

“Then you’ll have to hurry, Your Majesty the Empress.”

The day of the aristocratic meeting dawned.

In no time, my carriage was already approaching the venue where the noble meeting would take place.

Of course, it was the carriage that my Grandfather always used, the carriage for the head of the Lombardys.

I swept my hand over the interior of the carriage which was beautifully decorated in gold, like the black silk dress I was wearing.

“The feeling of riding on this carriage, I missed it.”

This unshakable sense of security that seems to be put into this moving carriage!

The Patriarch of Lombardy’s carriage.

Of course, I had also ridden in this carriage in my previous life.

However, I was only accompanying my grandfather everywhere as a secretary to assist him.

“Now, it’s mine.”

Now it’s for me, Florentia Lombardy, the Acting Patriarch Lombardy, and no one else.

And just like that, I felt as if I had an unspoken connection with the carriage, and soon arrived in front of the place that the aristocratic council was to be held.

I patted the ornament of the World Tree and whispered.

“Just wait here for a while, alright? I’ll be right back after finishing this task.”

Those words weren’t just said for no reason.

The aristocratic meeting this time wouldn’t be too long.

I walked softly, taking leisurely steps.

As soon as I entered the conference room, countless pairs of eyes focused on me.

“Oh it’s young miss?” 1

An old nobleman who was talking to another nobleman by the door asked me.

It was a man who belonged to the faction that sided with Angenas.

“Are you sure you haven’t come to the wrong place, young miss?”

“Is there perhaps a book club taking place near here?”

The sound of several people talking in whispers could be heard.

As I slowly glanced at their faces, one by one, the information regarding them floated in front of them.

That fat man who offered a bribe to his father and was turned down.

That grumpy looking man was competing with Shananae in the mining industry.

And the person who sent me a teddy bear for my 8th birthday.

There were very few people who were completely new to me in here.

Then, someone approached me.

“Oh, isn’t this Lombardy’s young miss?”

He was a nobleman I had seen several times before at a banquet.

He was a member of a household who was quite close to Lombardy and was always stuck right next to either my grandfather or Viege.

“Hello.”

Since I don’t remember his name, let’s just omit it completely.

Instead, I gave him a bright smile and asked.

“This is the conference room that will be used for the upcoming noble meeting, right?”

“That’s right, but…”

“Could you please let me know which seat my grandfather sits in when he normally attends the meeting?”

“Where the Patriarch Lombardy sits?”

The nobleman tilted his head for a while before telling me to follow him for now.

As I started to walk, numerous pairs of eyes also moved with me.

Curiosity, disapproval, vigilance.

All sorts of things stung the back of my head.

I gradually became more and more convinced by the fact that if I were not a Lombardy, I would not have been allowed into the conference room.

“Patriarch Lombardy hasn’t arrived yet.”

“Yes, I know.”

Right now, Grandfather is recuperating in bed.

“Aha, then did you perhaps come here to see Patriarch Lombardy?”

“No, nothing like that.”

The nobleman who guided me to my seat constantly chattered on without stopping.

Fortunately, my grandfather’s seat was not too far from the entrance.

Exactly to the right of the chairman’s chair.

The seat that was in the row furthest to the front and right in the centre.

It was a chair that didn’t look particularly stable or firm.

However, I was well aware of what such a position meant in this place.

“It’s here. However, as you can see, Patriarch Lombardi hasn’t arrived yet…”

Flop.

I ignored the nobleman who was talking about some other nonsense again and sat my butt down onto the empty chair.

I saw the Angenas faction on the other side glance over.

“What an ideal spot.”

I laughed when I thought of my grandfather sitting in this chair and glaring at the nobles on the other side.

“What…exactly are you doing right now?”

The eyes of the nobleman who guided me to my seat were wide open with astonishment.

The responses of the others in the conference room were no different.

“Ahem. Lady Lombardi.”

Then, I heard a courteous voice calling me.

It was the chairman.

“Yes, Chairman Killian. It’s been a while since I saw you. You came to my coming of age ceremony, didn’t you?”

“Yes, I did…do that.” 2

I could see the complex emotions flit past the chairman’s face.

He probably won’t be able to understand the situation any further since the appearance of me, sitting in the conference room probably overlaps with the one of me, having my coming of age ceremony only a few years ago.

“Ahem, Lady Lombardi. That seat is the seat of your grandfather, Patriarch Lombardy. the seat of my grandfather, the Lord Lombardi. If you’d like to watch the noble meeting, there’s a spot at the back over there…”

“I’ve come here to attend the meeting, not spectate it.”

“Attend…?”

“Yes, Sir Speaker.”

The chairman looked at me, dumbfounded.

The nobles who were waiting to attend the meeting started to talk as a crowd.

However, it was all like joyous music to my ears.

“If you’re attending…”

I’m sure you understand what I’m saying by now.

I repeated it once again, one word at a time in a clear and articulate voice to the chairman in order to confirm it with him again.

“Florentia Lombardy. The Acting Patriarch of Lombardy.”

[1] 자네: it’s a pronoun used to refer to someone who is a friend or younger than the speaker but can also be an endearment between friends, e.g. buddy, mate, old sport. since the dude is talking to tia, i just tled it as miss because i doubt that dude would refer to her as buddy or mate, especially if he’s in the angenas faction lmao

[2] “그랬…소.”: chairman killian switches from what we assume to be informal speech to semi-informal speech suitable for someone older addressing the younger in a somewhat respectful manner as tia is now both of age and at a conference meeting that only the heads of the family can attend (not to mention her extremely noble family status). bit hard to tl informal formal speech but you get the idea hehehe

AHHHH THAT ENDING literally while i was tling that last bit all i could hear was girlboss music hASDLKFDF #thatsmygirl u tell em bestie !!

yeah but was loki pissed when they were all doubting her bc think abt it, if a guy or a grandson walked into the meeting, they’d probably automatically assume they were acting patriarch, esp with a grandfather as old as tia’s, right? idk i might be reading too into it but i felt so satisfied when they all finally realised hASDLFKJ

SMCS Ch 1 — That Bastard isn’t the Male Lead, Right?

The year of 812 in the Cecillica Empire.

Duke Periot Chambers, who was ruling the northern part of Cecilica, was known for his coldness and cruelty.

He was so famous that there was no one who didn’t know the rumours of how it was possible for just his gaze to cut them and that their necks could disappear just from meeting his eyes.

Then, he earned another nickname two years ago, namely, ‘the groom who fled to the battlefield as soon as the wedding was consummated’.

Then, after the long war was finally over, the news of Duke Periot Chambers returning triumphantly and loaded with honours shook the northern estates that were but bare forests and frozen lakes like never before.

And it was an even happier event for me.

The very next day after taking possession of the body, with no where to escape to, I married him, and was left to rot in this prison without bars for two years after that.

And that was at the promising age of twenty-one as well!

Two years was really; excessively long and passed by extremely slow.

However, the time to put an end to this has come.

That is to say, with a divorce, of course.

And that was at the promising age of twenty-one as well!

Two years was really; excessively long and passed by extremely slow.

However, the time to put an end to this has come.

That is to say, with a divorce, of course.

[ / / / ]

Exactly 24 hours before the Northern Duke arrives at the mansion

“Duchess, the madam is calling for you.”

I stood up without saying a word once I heard the news that I had been waiting for.

Because I had expected that ‘she’ would call for me around this time.

As I followed the servant into the study, it was just as I had expected. Emma Chambers, Duke Periot’s mother, was already there waiting for me.

“Mother, I heard you were looking for me.”

I examined the look in her eyes as I gave her a polite greeting.

The old lady with white hair put down the teacup she was holding in her hand with a cold expression as soon as she heard me speak.

Then, without even responding with a yes or a no, she took out a sack that was about the size of a baby’s head.

Thud!

A fairly heavy sound resounded the moment it was set down onto the table.

“Lorella, I’ll speak bluntly. Divorce my son as soon as he gets back.”

“…Pardon?”

As expected! I was waiting for this moment!

I opened my eyes wide and quickly raised my head to stare at the blue sky outside of the window, biting my lip.

The tears would come out soon if I did this.

After doing this for a while, my eyes quickly started to ache.

I opened my mouth quickly in order not to miss the opportunity. My voice was already trembling slightly without even having to try due to the tingling pain in my eyes.

“J-Just, what in the world…what are you talking about…?”

“He is now the hero who has saved the Empire. He is also a person who was promised a sizeable reward by the Imperial Family due to his meritorious deeds! There’s going to be a bright future ahead of him, are you really going to block him from that?”

“But…”

She continued to speak, completely ignoring me.

“I would appreciate it if you could stop dragging my son down and leave now. Think of this as your payment.”

A golden light flickered through the cracks of the slightly loosened sack. No doubt it was gold. My heart started to race as soon as I saw it.

I bit my lip as hard as I could while trying to suppress my emotions that were overwhelming me.

Because otherwise, it was very likely for me to involuntarily shout out, ‘Even if you didn’t, I would have definitely still asked for a divorce, but thank you!’

“You were always a very obedient and docile child. That’s why I believe that you’ll listen to me this time too.”

“…Mother.”

“Should I be even more honest? You didn’t even fit into our family in the first place.”

Heuk…”

I quickly covered my face with both hands when I heard the cold words she had said.

I tried to squeeze out more tears, but it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.

It was because I was pissed.

‘Oi, this old hag really has no conscience!’

The reason she didn’t kick me out, even whilst finding me unsatisfactory was because she was worried that if by some chance, her son died on the battlefield, she would lose her means of living.

But now that her son is back, she doesn’t need me anymore, right?

But, Grandma. It seems like you aren’t aware of it, but the Northern Duke clearly wasn’t someone who would die that easily?

Because coming back alive, even if it’s from hell, is one of the prerequisites of being the Northern Duke!

Even though I’m angry enough to want to shoot her dead, I’ll still have to put up with her for now.

Emma clicked her tongue as I covered my face and shook my shoulders to make it seem as if I was crying.

I secretly looked between the cracks of my fingers to see her slowly turning her head away from me.

“I’ll leave it to you to talk to him. It would be better for you to clean this up neatly.”

I bent my waist in a deep bow.

“Thank you…for everything so far, really.”

And then I surged backwards quickly.

Quickly reaching out to grab the bag of gold coins and holding it tightly in my arms.

[ / / / ]

— Twelve hours before the Northern Duke arrives at the mansion —

Inside a dimly lit room, I grinned to myself like a madman.

“Good, very good.”

Exactly 10 towers of gold coins had filled up the top of the table.

Whilst looking at the blanket of shining golden light, I somewhat understood what the saying of being full without even eating meant.

I had imagined this sort of scene to some extent in my head, but I had not expected for it to move me this much.

A mother-in-law who asks her son’s wife to divorce him once he returns after making a big contribution. A kind wife who returns in tears without even being able to say a thing.

How many comics, books, and games with this sort of scene did I buy before I possessed this body? There would have been at least dozens, no, hundreds.

But no matter how many times I had indirectly experienced it, experiencing that sort of scene directly yourself, was a completely different feeling, as expected.

Kyaa!

So thrilling! It’s the best!

Looking at the mountain of gold coins, I would not have felt wronged if I had died quietly in this cold and old mansion during this time.

Of course, it wasn’t as if I had never thought of running away at night during these two years when he had been gone.

However, the surveillance of Emma Chambers and her hired servants was indeed brutal.

It was no exaggeration to say that she was no different to a prison guard.

However, this time, my mother-in-law just gave me money for a divorce. How can I not be excited?

Thank you, mother. I’ll put this money to good use.

After saluting sincerely in the direction of her room, I unfolded the piece of paper I had placed on the table with the gold coins.

It was full of the research I had done in advance, when I had dreamed of the freedom that would come someday.

“As expected, it would be better to go to Hotel Delphino first. For long-term guests, they offer a 30% discount on lodging rates. They also have the Gerard restaurant next to them which makes regular meals that renew every three months.”

At this rate, it would be sufficient for two and a half years, no, even three years would be fine.

It would be the best if this amount of money could last for three years, even whilst playing and eating like it’s a vacation everyday!

…Of course, I had no intention of spending so heavily like that.

“I can’t just play and eat comfortably without doing anything.”

In contrast to my red hair and red eyes now, I was originally an ordinary Korean before I took possession of this body. So even if I’m in a game, I’ll become anxious if I don’t do any work…!

I’ll use these gold coins as the starting amount to increase my wealth after enjoying my freedom for a while. I’ll make it happen at any cost.

I laid down on the bed with a light heart after putting the money back into the pouch, one by one.

“It’ll finally be tomorrow.”

After I sleep and wake up, I’ll be able to escape from this damn mansion.

Just thinking about it brought a smile to my lips. As soon as my mind had calmed down, my eyes also started to close by themselves.

[ / / / ]

— Ten seconds before the arrival of the Northern Duke Periot —

As the large carriage stopped in front of the mansion, the countless faces of the servants that were waiting stiffened with tension.

And it was the same with me.

Perhaps there was some kind of tension since it was the first time in two years we had seen each other since the wedding.

When the carriage had come to a complete stop, one of the escorting knights approached to open the door in a disciplined manner. I caught a glimpse of seat wrapped in a lavish purple velvet through the cracks in the door.

Then, someone immediately came out from within the carriage.

He was an attractive and tall man with pale skin, and soft looking black hair that neatly spilled over his forehead.

‘You’d immediately know he was the Northern Duke, even if you saw him whilst passing by on a jet.’

Watching him walk down the path as the escort knights stood on either side of it made me realise how the formula of ‘the Northern Duke = black hair’ had come about.

Because it matched extremely well with the cold atmosphere around him.

On top of that, with such a sculpted appearance, I wondered how that face had never popped up in my head during these two years. Had it not been for this sort of situation, my jaw would have dropped.

Just by the way he walked, exactly like the Northern Grand Duke, gave off a strange feeling of danger.

Perhaps because of the chilly gaze in his eyes, the servants gradually lowered their heads toward the ground, as if they had committed a crime.

I bit my lip hard.

The thought of having to talk about divorce in front of a man like that made me even more nervous.

“Quickly, come in. My son that I’m so proud of…!”

It was his mother, Emma, who broke the suffocating atmosphere. She suddenly took a step forward and hugged the Duke’s shoulder.

He merely bowed to his mother, who was crying profusely, with an expressionless face.

And then, he took a step towards me.

The clanking sound of the long sword that was wrapped around his waist was gradually getting closer and closer.

“…You’ve come back.”

First off, I gave my ‘husband’ a polite greeting. I must have seemed like an even weaker and more introverted wife to him, even if my voice was quite dull.

‘Now, you’ll look at me like I’m just a stone you found by the road, right?’

Peek.

Unsurprisingly, a cold gaze scanned my face indifferently.

“I’m glad you came back safely.”

Although I already knew what his reaction would be, I still added one more sentence, conscious of the gazes of the people surrounding us.

‘But of course you won’t reply whatsoever.’

“…”

Again, as expected, his mouth that was tightly closed did not open.

Our indifferent gazes intertwined for a moment.

The heavy tension between the couple was unimaginable. The servants, of course, and even Emma, were not able to speak rashly.

Periot, who finally took his gaze away from me, passed by without saying a word.

“Haa…”

I untied the scarf’s knot and finally let out a sigh.

“Well, there’s no character that’s as easy to understand as the Northern Duke.”

“Pardon? Duchess, what did you just say?”

One of the maid’s ears perked up upon hearing me talking to myself. However, I just pretended not to know and shook my head.

“It was nothing.”

Although it didn’t feel good to be ignored by someone like this, it was still nice for me to know that he hated me as much as he did now.

Wouldn’t the story start from here if this was a novel that actually existed somewhere?

A husband who regards his wife who is linked to him by an arranged marriage as less than a rock, and a mother-in-law who regards her daughter-in-law who puts up with her until the end despite her request for a divorce as a pain in the eye.

And a kind and gentle female lead who foolishly endures it all.

But in the end, she is exhausted, and leaves without a word one day, and only then will the man regret it.

Unable to accept the fact that the existence that has always been silently staying by his side has disappeared, he will gradually become stained with obsession and madness.

That’s right, as expected, an obsessive and regretful man in the Rofan 1 genre is the best.

The things I had seen in the past and put in my cart just by seeing the keyword, ‘regretful man’ were still vivid in my mind.

But apart from that, I absolutely refused to become the victim of that sort of trope.

“Those things are only amusing when you read them in novels.”

It’s not like I can live relying on my face for my whole life.

Although the maid cast a suspicious gaze at me, who continued to mumble to myself, I hurriedly followed Duke Periot’s heavy footsteps without any hesitation.

[ / / / ]

The inside of the Duke’s mansion, which was always quiet enough to be desolate was full of energy and life.

This was because a banquet was being held in order welcome Duke Periot, who returned from making big achievements in the war.

The banquet hall was decorated in a luxurious way like never before, and the tables were full of delicious food.

Although countless amounts of nobles came to see him with all sorts of gifts in order to be seen in a good light by him, today’s protagonist didn’t seem to have any interest in the party.

Even after his mother, Emma, had caught him several times, he only bluntly greeted the crowd before going straight to the study.

Because of that, people flocked to Emma and I.

They all seemed to want to curry favour, even if it was with a chicken instead of a pheasant.

I adequately dealt with the people around me before taking a break and sneaking out of the banquet. Then I passed the quiet hallway and climbed up the staircase.

The gorgeous dress that I was wearing, which Emma had chosen herself, saying that we had to keep up appearances before getting divorced, was only uncomfortable because it was tightly squeezing my whole body.

The second floor was extremely tranquil.

There was only the sound of my footsteps echoing through the hallway.

At the end of the hallway was a large, heavy wooden door.

Don’t be nervous.

I took a deep breath before knocking on the door.

“Come in.”

The sound of the door creaking open broke the tranquil silence.

As soon as I entered the room, I saw a man sitting upright, like a painting leaning over the desk.

He had such a neat and scholarly appearance that it was hard to believe that he was a person that had wielded a sword on the rough battlefield not too long ago.

A face without a single thing out of place suited the neat study where nothing was placed carelessly extremely well.

Of course, apart from that, the eyes that looked at me had not changed and were still cold.

The look that glanced at my face to check who I was as soon as I entered the study went straight back to the paperwork.

And then I heard his voice, which was as cold as the look in his eyes.

“What’s the matter?”

“I, that’s…”

“There’s no way you came here just because you wanted to see me.”

Wow, a voice full of chills that was cold like the Siberian wind, and an aggressive attitude that was thrown at me without any context.

It was the Northern Duke, perfect to the bone.

Although I had a desire to savour this very much of a cliche textbook character a little more, unfortunately, I didn’t come here to do that.

“I have something to tell you.”

I deliberately made my hand tremble slightly and held the paper out in front of him.

Although I wanted to do as my heart said and fiercely throw it all away and just run, I knew that if I did so, I wouldn’t be able to secure true freedom.

After I took a few deep breaths…

“Please give me a divorce.”

I finally said it.

“A divorce?”

Periot looked at me while slowly setting down the paperwork he was holding in his hand.

Unsurprisingly, I couldn’t read any emotion in his gaze.

I didn’t give up and continued to speak.

“Yes, I want a divorce.”

“…how come?”

“Because I don’t love the Duke, and the Duke doesn’t love me either.”

Silence flowed between us for a while.

I swallowed the dry saliva that was stuck at the back of my throat amidst the subtle tension.

“Lorella.”

Then, a voice so cold that it gave me goosebumps from just hearing it leaked out from between his lips.

Eyes as sharp as his jawline were staring at me.

“Your household, Count Mayred…”

He slowly got up and sighed as he continued to speak.

“Amongst the thirty two households that supported the military in the war this time, you won’t be able to find their name anywhere.”

His pitch black hair swayed gently, following Periot’s movements.

“They won’t have any chance at getting a seat amongst the 100 seats of the chamber room either next year, since the taxes that they pay to the Imperial Family are in those of the lower ranks.”

There was still no warmth in the eyes that ran down my face.

“Nevertheless, do you know why you’re still in the position of this mansion’s mistress?”

“…”

“It’s because I allowed it.”

He raised his head with a brazenly arrogant expression on his face.

“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear the bullshit you just said.”

I was speechless for a moment, stunned by the overbearing attitude that seemed to look down on me, as if I was inferior to him.

Bullshit? Bullshittt?!

I calmly opened my mouth again.

“What I mean is… I hope you’ll be able to match with a family that will be of more help to you.”

Don’t you hate me anyways?

To the extent that I can’t even find any trace of you asking about how I am in any of the letters that were sent to the Duke’s residence during the two years you were on the battlefield.

“Now that you have become the hero of the empire, there will definitely be a good marriage partner, one that will be incomparable to the Mayred family.”

As soon as I finished speaking, he hurriedly approached me and took the divorce papers without saying a word.

His eyes that were black like obsidian, slowly scanned the paper.

His expression gradually grew darker and darker as time went on.

tl/n: forget the ml i want the fl hasldkfjdf mf so fineeeee

It was then, when I had unconsciously taken a step back in response to the somewhat threatening atmosphere.

The sound of his teeth grinding together came from inside his rightly clenched jaw.

Then immediately, with a crackling sound, torn pieces of paper were scattered in the air.

“Huh…?”

Things that seemed like snow-white butterfly wings fell flutteringly in front of my eyes.

At the same time, the sound of a low voice sneering struck my ears.

“I have no intention of getting a divorce. Of course, you’ll never be able to escape from here either.”

I could feel the heat rush all the way to the tip of my head the moment one corner of his mouth curled up, as if he was ignoring me.

It had been an exciting scene when I had only read it in a novel, but when I had directly experienced it myself, I was so angry that my whole body was shaking in anger.

“What do you think you’re doing right now…!”

It was at that time when I was about to step forward to question him again.

Ding-dong, ding-dong!

The sound of a loud bell from who knows where rang in my ears, and a dazzling window that I had never seen before, only the size of a palm, suddenly appeared before my eyes.

Behind it, the face of my husband who had hardened his expression into a cold one again, was clearly reflected.

“Heok!”

I screamed unconsciously and took a step back.

At the same time, unfamiliar letters began to appear quickly in the transparent window that was in the shape of a rectangle.

「Sir ‘That bastard isn’t the male lead, right?’ has opened your shares account.」

「50 shares, 100 shares, 200 shares… In an instant, it breaks through 300 shares!」

“W-What is this!?”

I stopped screaming in surprise and flopped down on the sofa in the study.

No matter how hard I blinked or rubbed my eyes, even enough for it to hurt, the window still didn’t disappear.

“Now you’re even pretending to be crazy. There’s no point in acting. It won’t happen, no matter what you do, even if you die.”

Periot grabbed my arm and forced me to stand up before roaring out in a grim voice.

“So go back to your room obediently.”

「Sir ‘That bastard isn’t the male lead, right?’ is enraged and starts to swear.」

The window which moved according to my gaze, launched a short and concise message whilst covering Periot’s face completely.

「Don’t be so mean, you rotten bastard!」

RMHM Ch 6 — Always Beautiful, Always Crazy

“Madam, madam!”

Although the shock had not left me yet, another maid urgently rushed into the drawing room.

“There’s someone outside that came to ask for the person who attended the Grand Duchess’ funeral ceremony!”

“What?”

“Madam! What else is going on outside?”

Marge’s eyes looked straight at me without any doubt, as if it was clear that this all stemmed from an accident I had made.

“How did you reply to them?”

“Yes? Oh, They said that they weren’t just looking for madam but everyone who had attended the funeral so I told them that I’d go confirm it with you and came in right away!”

“I’ll go out myself.”

“Sorry? What…! Who would it be at this hour at night? You can check who it is with the butler and go to the guest room on the first floor to…”

Marge’s meddling just went in one ear and out the other.

“No, I think I should go out and confirm it for myself.”

I hurriedly rearranged my clothes.

It’s Noah.

It’s obviously Noah.

[ / / / ]

Vincento swallowed his saliva dryly as he looked at the sensual lips which had turned white in front of him.

It wasn’t simply just because his lips were beautiful, but rather the harsh words that would normally pour out of those lips and made him not even dare to move.

“Your Highness?”

“…”

A faint ray of light brushed the tip of the man’s arrogant nose as he stared silently out of the carriage.

However, his expression was always dark.

The nervousness that didn’t match the beautiful injured man’s face not only stiffened, but also turned deathly pale.

It was strange for his face to turn pale like a corpse, considering his track record of not even batting an eye to the corpses or evil things that he had seen, no matter how many there were.

Vincento also naturally turned his eyes to the place his eyes were facing.

A woman with black hair, so beautiful it was rare to see.

And in front of her was another lieutenant, Neil, who was saying something to her while scratching his head.

While the woman who had been wary of Neil went back into Count Acacia’s estate again, Neil returned to his master, who couldn’t take his eyes off the doorway to the Count’s estate.

“…her name, what is it?”

The man whose face was still deathly pale after checking the woman’s face, Roadnez, finally opened his mouth after a while.

Roadnez was so distracted that he didn’t even hear Neil come back to them and knock on the carriage door.

Vincento just sighed deeply and opened the carriage door instead of answering.

Neil, who had a flushed face, promptly came into the carriage and sat down, words pouring out in a mumble.

“The maid’s name is Marge. She just came back from the Grand Duke Trovica’s cemetery. The Countess Acacia suddenly disappeared without saying a word, so she stayed out until late to look for her. She doesn’t remember seeing Your Highness.

“…Your Highness!”

Vincento and Neil desperately blocked him as he tried to sprint out of the carriage door.

Even though he was seriously injured, he was so strong that their hands that were holding onto his broad shoulders and arms were trembling.

“What are you going to do after you go outside?”

“Please, I’d rather you just say you’re in love with her!”

As Neil, whose face was still red like before, said that, the carriage descended into a chilly atmosphere.

“…are you crazy?”

The craziest person in here right now is clearly you, Your Highness!

Neil barely managed to hold back what he was about to say and opened his mouth with difficulty.

“How scared would a young lady be if a man who was covered with bandages all over his body asked if you were the ghost he had met in the cemetery?”

“Young lady?”

“She was a beautiful and timid young lady! She’s not the ghost Your Highness is looking for.”

Neil answered in reply to Vincento’s question.

And as soon as Neil saw Roadnez’s cold expression on his face, he quickly sucked in a breath and hiccuped.

Before he could even protest, Neil was kicked out of the carriage.

“Ack!”

“You dare say it was a ghost?”

“Your Highness! Your Highness!”

Although he had known that his master had always been a little bit crazy.

Roadnez’s eyes had been in a crazy state ever since hearing the news of the Grand Duchess’ passing at dawn today.

Although he would act as if his reasoning had completely collapsed if he wasn’t able to get what he wanted, if he asked with that face, anyone would run away and he wouldn’t even be able to stop them.

“Just who are you looking for?”

“…I don’t know.”

“Your Highness! I’m sorry, but…”

Vincento spoke in a low voice as he blocked Roadnez with his whole body.

“If she sees the state that Your Highness is in right now…”

He wasn’t just talking about the pathetic state of the man who had an injury that had pierced his abdomen.

The problem with Roadnez, who was wearing a cast that Vincento had hastily put on one arm and was only wearing a jacket on his bare body on top of the bandages that had been wrapped loosely by Neil on his abdomen, were his eyes.

“She would be really, extremely scared. It wouldn’t be good if your face isn’t presentable. Besides, she’s only a normal person, so she won’t be able to accept it even more.

“Yes, how scared was that young lady, even when she saw me! What should we do if her entire body stiffens the moment she sees your red eyes…”

“Neil!”

At Vincento’s low shout, Neil clutched his kicked shin and straightened his curled up body into a salute.

On the contrary, Roadnez, who he had thought would curse at him and kick him as usual, was quiet.

Neil sneaked out of the carriage and looked up at his master who was looking down at him.

‘Ah…’

The red eyes that were glistening beautifully were not looking in his direction.

Rather, he was merely staring at Count Acacia’s estate with a gaze full of regret.

With a face in a state that was so pale it would not have been odd for him to die soon.

“Let’s go for the time being, Your Highness.”

“My apologies. It was a slip of the tongue…”

“…you punks are right. ”

The burning emotions that were reflected in Roadnez’s eyes was not the anger that was directed at Neil.

Vincento hit Neil’s head as he watched Roadnez walk back into the carriage without saying a word.

The Second Prince, Roadnez, who had both brilliant blonde hair and ominous red eyes.

Although he was famous for his beauty and strength, he was merely an object of fear to the general public.

Seeing as if he had said too much out of a sense of duty to protect the lady, Neil raised Vincento’s hand and slapped it over his mouth this time.

Creak.

At that moment, like a lie, the window was opened.

Neil moved closer to that place in order to apologise properly and gave a disciplined salute.

“That woman who just went in, look into her properly.”

Damn it, can’t you just let it go?

Seeing Neil who had become frozen stiff, Vincento shook his head and opened the carriage door to examine the body of Roadnez, who had already been given first aid, again.

Then…

“Your Highness!”

The scene of his beautiful master tensing his chiseled jaw to endure the pain, then finally collapsing in the end, appeared before his eyes.

“Your Highness!”

“Neil! You carry out His Highness’ orders. I’ll bring him back to the palace.”

Vincento violently closed the carriage door and urgently pressed the coachman to leave.

Neil was so shocked that he stared blankly at them as they disappeared, leaving a cloud of dust in their wake.

Then, he remembered his master, who had been in distress since dawn.

[ / / / ]

Roadnez Cozma de Ronta had always been beautiful, and had always been crazy.

He fought like a man who was not interested in anything but stabbing, cutting, and killing, and despite knowing that no one could keep up with his physical strength, demanded his subordinates to surpass such abnormalities.

At the same time, it was no exaggeration to say that he was the Empire’s best looking man, who had the most delicate yet manly features, that seemed to have been carved out of jewels.

However, as the Lord God did not give humans everything, he was extremely ruthless and cold-hearted in contrast to his beautiful face, and was unable to say a single nice word.

They used to spitefully call him the crazy ‘Mad Dog Prince’ amongst themselves in secret.

The Empire’s prodigal son who would tell the women from every direction who lifted their skirts and stuck to him to ‘Do more’ with a calm expression.

Everyone said that he was so beautiful that countless famous beauties would approach him, yet he remained indifferent.

Furthermore, Roadnez was a prince who was still single, and was someone who could receive a high title in the future.

No matter what fief he went to defend, there were countless women who wanted to be in his bedroom.

It was the same today.

For the past two years or so, although his crazy master had been acting more and more insane, he was seriously injured while killing a monster that was the size of a house that had suddenly appeared at dawn.

Because his master was adept at living as if there was no tomorrow, he was worried about the barely sufficient medical treatment that had been administered on him, but when he entered the bedroom, he saw a trembling woman who was almost naked.

Upon looking closer, it was the daughter of the manor’s lord who had just greeted them.

“Y-Your Highness, the Prince…!”

The woman was trembling, but could not hide her blushing face and glanced at the prince.

However, Roadnez held a sword which still had blood that had not been wiped of it yet, and pointed it at her.

“Get lost.” he spat out from between his teeth, trying to endure.

t/n: hE’S SO MF FINEEEEEE

No matter who saw, the manor lord’s daughter was obviously a beauty that was alluring enough to turn heads!

Neil, who swallowed his saliva in vain, looked at the woman who was not leaving and merely standing still.

“Are your ears blocked?”

“I-I’m just…trying to give the newspaper to Your Highness.”

Roadnez did not speak twice.

The atmosphere was as thin as ice until the woman’s hair was cut off in the blink of an eye, the woman letting out a scream before fleeing.

“…the newspaper is innocent. Your Highness.”

Wondering if he would be implicated in this to no avail, Neil picked up the Empire Daily that the manor lord’s daughter brought in as an excuse and handed it over to him.

Roadnez, who would have normally cut you down with his sword and make you disappear as well in his rage, remained rooted in place, frozen stiff.

“Your Highness?”

In an instant the newspaper was taken out of his own hands.

The prince, who exuded a chill as if he had been washed in ice water, suddenly distorted his handsome face.

“…what sort of bullshit is this?”

“What is it?”

Roadnez spat out a low profanity before he quickly scanned the crumpled newspaper and brought his uniform that had barely dried, giving up the idea of trying to leave without wearing proper clothes.

“!”

“Breaking! Grand Duchess Trovica dies of chronic illness at dawn!”

Did His Highness always have such a close relationship with Grand Duchess Trovica?

Whilst Neil was agonising over this, he suddenly heard the sound of horseshoes violently cutting through the air as he opened the window in confusion.

“This crazy…Your Highness! Your Highness?!”

Early in the morning, when dawn broke, he looked at the back of the mad prince who was already far away, his cape flapping in the wind as he rode his horse.

[ / / / ]

When the carriage that was carrying Roadnez was so far away he couldn’t even see the back of it anymore, only then did Neil finally relax his stiff body as his lips curled up.

He didn’t know if he was deluding himself or not, but tears seemed to have flowed down the cheek of his master who had just collapsed.

‘I must have seen wrong. The Mad Dog Prince crying?’

Neil got on the horse, overwhelmed with the feeling of needing to find out about this woman named Marge, even though he didn’t think his crazy master would cry just because someone had died.

[ / / / ]

It wasn’t Noah.

Noah didn’t come to find me.

At least it wasn’t his aide, Sir Jimsker.

“Madam, was that perhaps His Highness the Grand Duke…?”

“No.”

I turned my face away from Marge’s disappointed face.

The one who was more disappointed was me.

But I didn’t blame her.

‘I’m Marge, the maid who works in this house.’

“I’m sorry, Marge.”

“Pardon…? What for?”

Marge was staring intently at my lips that were apologising, her eyes wide open.

“Just because.”

Marge stiffened, as if she had seen a ghost.

I said that that with sincerity and cast my gaze outside the window.

The knight called ‘Neil’ who had come to find me had already disappeared.

My hands trembled slightly.

‘I had no other choice but to lie. So, don’t be scared.’

I didn’t want to contact anyone until I had met with Novian properly.

“Yona, bring me some medicine!”

“What for? What kind of medicine, Marge?”

“…clearly madam has made an extremely big mistake somewhere.”

And Marge, who was still dumbfounded, started to look for medicine to give me.

IWBMTL Ch 207

“I’ll have to stop him.”

Empress Lavini said to Duigi.

Duigi Angenas was more frightened by Lavini’s calm appearance.

Ever since she was a child, Lavini was someone who had a fiery personality and smashed things when she was angry.

However, now, she looked very calm.

But Duigi thought he’d rather her be angry.

It was because he felt as if a calm Lavini further proved that the situation was not good.

Perhaps even worse than Duigi could even imagine.

Lavini, who had taken all the real power and left a puppet in the Patriarch’s seat, was resentful, but now was time to leave those sort of feelings behind.

“What should I do, sister?”

Duigi asked seriously.

“Didn’t I tell you? We have to stop him.”

A blue blood vessel throbbed on the back of Lavini’s clenched fists.

“That lowly thing…”

Lavini gritted her teeth when she thought of Perez.

She had thought it was quiet for a the time being, but couldn’t believe that he had actually secretly planned this sort of scheme behind their backs during this time.

“It’s clear that the Second Prince, Brown, and Lombardy, all had a part in this, Duigi.”

The one who had held a hunting competition and attracted them to Madman’s Forest was none other than Florentia Lombardy.

“Although I’d very much like to cut off the head of that disgraceful thing.”

Empress Lavini said to Duigi.

She was still the Patriarch Lombardy’s granddaughter, and the daughter of Gallahan Lombardy.

She didn’t know how Lombardy would react if she touched her recklessly.

Besides, the Imperial Army was not allowed to step foot into the Lombardy’s mansion.

Lavini, whose thoughts had spread to the imperial knights, asked Duigi.

“How is the issue with the Knights coming along?”

“There’s a division of them within the Imperial Knights.”

Angenas occupied the west, expanding their influence, and the Empress who was originally from Angenas would give birth to a legitimate heir.

The 40 years that Angenas had spent building up their power were enough for them to spread their people throughout the empire.

And the Imperial Knights was one of them.

“According to the report, they’re saying it’s split in half.”

“Half?”

Lavini raised her eyebrows.

“We’ve put so much money into the Imperial Knights during this time, and you’re telling me we only have half?!”

Thwack!

Lavini punched the table.

“The thing is… It should be the current Knight Commander. Tollian Buckton. It seems that the Second Prince and the Brown family are united around him.”

“If we had a little more time, we could have replaced the Knight Commander’s position with our own men.”

If only there was a little more time.

Empress Lavini kept muttering these words.

Something was strange.

It was hard for words to describe it, but the things that were definitely going to go to plan were all being dislocated.

It was a great sense of incongruity.

She kept having a strange premonition that she might have been toying with one person for too long, which was ridiculous, but she couldn’t ignore it.

The one who had found the dying Second Prince and became his guardian.

Then the one who had sent him to the Academy beyond the influence of the Empress.

The man who gave the returned Second Prince a chance to grab a position in politics under the pretext of the northern landslide, and even gave his granddaughter a boost.

And finally, the one who had set up the spectacular stage for the Brown family to draw everyone’s attention.

“Lombardy, that old man.”

In the meantime, if you looked at everything that had been in the way of Lavini and the Angenas, Lombardy was the one behind it, every single time.

Lavini tried to cool her head when she recalled dealing with Rulac.

One had to keep their head above water in order to successfully deal with him.

“I’ll leave the noble meeting up to you and Patriarch Sushou, Duigi. No matter what happens, the Browns must not be put back onto the aristocratic register.”

“Of course.”

Duigi Angenas answered quickly.

It would have been very difficult to deal with Rulac Lombardy alone, but the odds were stacked against the Lombardy if they were acting together with Sushou.

In fact, the power of the Angenas became stronger at noble meetings after it was revealed to the public that Sushou was standing on the same side as the First Prince.

“But how do I explain what happened to the First Prince?”

In the meantime, Duigi has been spreading rumours about how Astana ‘Didn’t do it on his own, he was just high on drugs.’

Thanks to this, the ones who supported Angenas and feared that the First Prince would be dethroned and lead to something big happening had subsided, but further measures needed to be added.

“He’s being falsely accused. Someone drugged Astana. Put it that way.”

“If they ask me who drugged him…”

Of course the correct answer was Perez.

But that was not something Empress Lavini nor Duigi could say.

Perez was the investigator who was in charge of the investigation.

“Right now, our top priority is to turn the arrow away from Astana. So…”

Empress Lavini’s eyes shone ruthlessly.

“You said Bellesac was still in custody, right?”

“You’re not possibly saying…”

Duigi Angenas’ jaw dropped.

It was because Empress Lavini was clearly showing him what she intended to do.

“You can’t possibly be thinking of pinning all this on that child, right?”

“Then is there a better way, Duigi?”

Lavini snorted.

“According to the knights’ investigation that you brought in, Astana clearly says, ‘Bellesac brought the canteen.'”

“But isn’t Bellesac the son of Serral?”

Serral was a cousin of Lavini and Duigi.

Empress Lavini frowned when she saw Duigi’s shocked face.

It was an extremely unpleasant face.

So she snapped back.

“Duigi. Bellesac, that kid isn’t an Angenas. He’s a Lombardy, isn’t he?”

Duigi Angenas had nothing else to say, and couldn’t do anything but stare blankly at the Empress.

[ / / / ]

At the same time.

Perez was entering the room where Bellesac Lombardy was detained with a few Imperial Knights.

Amidst the tense atmosphere, Bellesac asked.

“When can I go back to the Lombardy mansion?”

“Hmm, I’m not sure. So far, Lombardy hasn’t pleaded for you yet.”

“There’s no way…”

Bellesac’s voice stopped.

His father, Viege, had pretty much been ousted from the Lombardy family while his mother, Serral, was an Angenas and the Empress’ cousin.

He finally realised that there was no one left to pull him out of this situation.

Flop.

Bellesac sank into a chair, grabbing his hair.

“I didn’t do anything wrong, so why…”

He had had a faint strand of hope earlier.

By now, the Angenas’ faction should have already taken him out, by the request of either Lombardy, or his mother, Serral.

However, the ones who came to find him were instead, Perez and the Imperial Knights.

There was no place left for him to put his hopes on.

Perez spoke to the knights whilst looking down at Bellesac’s figure.

“Give us a moment.”

“…yes, Your Highness.”

The knights hesitated for a moment, but soon followed through and moved according to his orders.

A knight, who had remained in the room until the end, alternated his gaze between Perez and Bellesac with look of suspicion, but couldn’t do anything else.

There was no other way.

The Imperial Knights had to obey the orders of those surnamed Durelli.

Click.

With a quiet thud, the door closed as Perez sat himself across from Bellesac.

The way he leaned languidly against the backrest and crossed his legs differed greatly from his behaviour and atmosphere with the knights earlier.

Bellesac looked at Perez with wary eyes.

“Hey.”

Perez called out to Bellesac.

“Do you want to die like this?”

“W-What the hell are you…!”

Whilst he was with Astana, it had become a habit to mock and ridicule the Second Prince, so Bellesac, who had unconsciously spoke informally to Perez, shut his mouth hurriedly.

Perez, who seemed to understand why Bellesac was like this, replied in a calm voice.

“So far, there still isn’t anyone that will save you. I think you’re starting to get pretty desperate.”

Perez opened one of the boxes that were left at the table by the knights and showed him the canteen that was inside before saying.

“During the investigation, Astana said that ‘Bellesac was the one who handed me the canteen.'”

Bellesac’s brown eyes shook wildly.

Perez opened the second box.

“And this dagger that was used in the Emperor’s assassination also belongs to you, doesn’t it?”

“T-That’s…!”

“How do you think this would like to other people if the Angenas faction blamed this crime all on you?”

Perez continued as he looked at Bellesac’s face, which was gradually turning white.

“The Empress will accuse you as the main culprit, Bellesac Lombardy. You also know full well that she is the type of person to do that.”

Bellesac bit his lip.

It was exactly as Perez said.

Bellesac himself knew how cruel Empress Lavini was.

“I, who was the original owner of the water bottle and you, who stole it and gave it to Astana. However, I’m the investigator who’s in charge of this assassination case, so I can’t be accused. The only person left to blame is you, whose last name is Lombardy.”

At Perez’s words, Bellesac closed his eyes tightly.

Then Perez asked.

“Do you want to live?”

Bellesac lifted his head up.

His dull brain worked quickly in order to understand the current situation.

“Do you want to live?”

Perez asked once more.

“…y-yes! I, I want to live!”

Bellesac seemed to cling onto Perez’s legs.

Perez looked at Bellesac with a cold gaze for a moment, before taking out a piece of paper from his breast pocket.

It was a blank sheet of paper with nothing written on it.

“What…what is this?”

Bellesac was puzzled, as Perez tossed the piece of paper onto the table and said.

“Write a letter to your mother, Serral.”

[ / / / ]

The Empress had called the Sushou Patriarch to the Imperial Palace.

“I can only count on the Patriarch Sushou.”

Lavini said directly to Chanton Sushou.

Last time, Empress Lavini’s request for him to assassinate Perez was like a test.

It was in order for her to see whether or not she could trust the character of Chanton Sushou.

Eventually, Empress Lavini began to fully trust the former Imperial Knights Commander, Chanton Sushou, who had left evidence of his attempt to kill the prince.

“Aren’t Sushou and Angenas on the same boat right now?”

Empress Lavini poured tea for Patriarch Sushou with a beguiling smile.

“I can take care of Astana’s side, so please take care of the noble meeting’s side of things, Patriarch Sushou.”

“You mean the Browns.”

Chanton Sushou asked in a peculiar monotonous tone.

“That’s correct. It’s an extremely important issue.”

The Empress replied whilst continuing to smile.

But that smile didn’t last long.

It was because of what Chanton Sushou had said whilst putting down his tea cup.

“Then you should give us the estates belonging to Angenas.”

the way lavini’s mind works is sort of insane but i have to give it up to her, she’s rlly formidable.

IBOMLEW Ch 2 — The Reborn Duchess

Meanwhile Fervin, who had arrived at the dining room first, folded the documents in his hand and laid them aside.

He squinted his eyes at the food that didn’t come out, no matter how long he looked at the documents.

When he called the butler, Alfred, and asked what was going on, he was delivered some surprising news.

“Madam said that she would have dinner together with you. How about waiting a little longer?”

“What nonsense, why would someone who has never eaten with me…”

Before he could even find out what had happened, the dining room door was pushed wide open.

Irwen, who was dressed nicely in a fluttering red dress, came in with her long curly hair, ruffled in the air.

She lifted her head up to look at him as she sat down at the table, opposite to him with the guidance of a maid.

A pleasant and rich voice came out of her mouth.

“I wanted us to eat together. Is that alright with you?”

Instead of answering, Fervin just stared at her.

He was surprised and astounded, so stunned that it was as if someone had hit his head and given him a concussion.

She, who normally always had on thick makeup like a ghost, appeared in front of him with a bare face.

That bright smile that was on her milky white face, the one that seemed as if it was specifically meant for him, was so beautiful that it seemed to be engraved in his heart.

The bolt that had been firmly locked for the past four years wriggled wildly, as if it was trying to free itself.

‘I’m really going crazy.’

He turned his gaze away from Irwen’s face with difficulty and buried his face in both hands.

He rubbed his eyes, as if he was tired, and quickly organised his thoughts.

The sudden change of his wife, who had no interest in him, but rather only had hatred, could only be interpreted as this.

“Are you perhaps still sick? Doctor Doppari originally said that you were fine already but…”

Irwen had a confused expression on her face in reply to Fervin’s serious question.

“I’m not sick anymore. It went away as soon as I woke up.”

“Then why aren’t you acting like before? And why aren’t you wearing any makeup?”

“I feel like the heavy makeup was bad for my skin. Why, does it look weird?”

Her candid tone without a single hint of poison aimed at him, tickled him.

Fervin stared intently at Irwen.

It was the first time he had seen Irwen’s bare face after getting married.

Irwen’s face that was normally covered with thick makeup which was worse than not wearing makeup, was so beautiful that it put him in a daze.

Irwen tilted her head slightly, as if to ask why he was looking at her like that, but he couldn’t stop looking at his own wife.

‘Was this woman…was she always…so pretty?’

He hadn’t seen her in such a long time that now, he had almost forgot her lively face.

He had never seen her bare face after their horrible first night together.

However, he had heard the conversations of the maids who helped her get dressed.

“Madam is much prettier without makeup. I really don’t know why she bothers to do such ghost-like makeup.”

That’s right, he also wasn’t sure why she was always in such atrocious makeup.

She was much prettier when she wasn’t.

Eyebrows that drooped down slightly, curving like a crescent moon, and clear glass-like skin.

Not to mention those big eyes that were currently staring at him.

Fervin shook his head violently at Irwen’s face that was shimmering right in front of him.

As the ticklish feeling in his heart that he had sealed away for years already began to rise again, he vigilantly pushed it down.

No, he didn’t know what sort of scheme that villainess had come up with to torture him.

He decided that he would no longer be lead by the nose by Irwen and made up his mind.

Fervin coughed before spitting out in a cold voice.

“Yeah, it looks weird.”

“Don’t you think my bare face looks better than that sort of heavy makeup?”

“No, I’d rather your old style of makeup.”

He spoke in a firm voice, yet he could feel his face burning due to the lie he had just spit out.

His face grew redder when he heard Irwen mumble, “Your taste is quite unique…” as if she found him absurd.

His heart, which had been firmly locked away, started to beat again.

Fervin clenched his teeth and looked away from Irwen.

He thought about whether he should leave his seat, but then decided against it.

Although the Irwen who had suddenly changed made him flustered, she also at the same time evoked his curiosity.

For several days, it had been reported that Irwen had been kind to the servants rather than hurling verbal insults toward them.

It wasn’t just Irwen’s way of speaking that had changed.

When she had appeared at dinner today, she had done so without her previous makeup which was so thick it seemed as if she was wearing a mask.

Her attitude, which had always been aggressive, had become much more docile.

She had also stopped secretly sending specialty products back to her parents in the Verma Duchy.

Everything about his wife had changed.

Whether she was acting or truthfully repentant remained yet to be dug out by Fervin, but at the same time, he was afraid.

He was afraid that his sincerity would be betrayed by her again.

However, at the same time, he had a strong desire to stay with her and see it to the end.

‘Don’t you still get excited just from looking at her face? Can you really go all the way? Won’t you fall for her first?’

He heard the voice of his conscience that was sealed deep within him, provoking him.

Fervin tried to push it down as much as possible.

[ / / / ]

Dinner passed under a heavy atmosphere.

Although I wasn’t expecting a heartwarming or lively dinner, I still wasn’t expecting a dinner so silent it stifled my breathing.

Although Fervin did not avoid my sudden attendance, he was still eating with a stiff face.

I tried to initiate conversations with him several times, but each time, Fervin simply looked at me instead of answering, and often avoided my gaze, as if he didn’t want to see me.

How was I supposed to have a conversation with someone who was avoiding me?

We just quietly cut our steaks.

Amidst the silent atmosphere that seemed to weigh down on my entire body, I wasn’t even sure whether the meat was going into my mouth or my nose.

However, Fervin, who sat across from me, was extremely pleasing to the eye, that was what I had ascertained while watching him.

The movement of him cutting steak was elegant, so much so that all he needed to do was sit there, and it would be a masterpiece of art.

He was dazzlingly beautiful.

Looking back on the novel, everyone praised the appearance of Duke Shivelom, who was the Emperor’s younger brother, but in the end, none of them could compare to Duke Carlisle’s beauty.

Before Fervin got married, he was by far the Empire’s most outstanding bachelor, and even after his marriage, was still voted as the best man.

Even as a married man, there were many noblewomen who were waiting for him at social gatherings, and it was exactly for the following reason.

Everyone had foreseen that he would divorce the Duchess after their five year contract was up, and then afterwards, Fervin would return to the social world as a bachelor.

As a reader who knew the backstory, I was also only aiming for that moment.

I couldn’t break an agreement between two countries, so for now, I would spend the rest of the remaining year and live quietly, then peacefully accept the divorce in order to stay alive.

But first, I had to at least attempt to live peacefully with my husband if I wanted to spend the rest of the year without any problems.

My plan had already gotten off on the wrong foot from the beginning.

I glanced at him while pondering whether or not to give him a piece of steak.

Would feeding him a piece of steak make his mood get any better?

No, it wouldn’t, after all, weren’t we a couple that had a different kind of relationship compared to other couples?

I glanced at him who was reading the document next to him.

He stuck out his fork, as if to pierce the steak, then did it again.

He stuck out his fork several more times in order to reach the food.

I looked up when my head tingled from his gaze, seeing Fervin staring at me with a strange look.

He was observing me without even knowing that his brilliant platinum hair had fallen down onto his forehead, and when our eyes met, he coughed in embarrassment.

“Ahem.”

His pale green eyes trembled slightly as he turned his head away.

He spoke to me in a voice that sounded like a wounded beast.

“I’m asking you honestly. Just what the hell are you up to?”

“I’m trying to get along with you now.”

“Irwen. It’s already been four years since I’ve been with you. You think I don’t know all about your shallow tricks?”

“A trick? I’m just trying to do my duty that I wasn’t able to do before and cleanly cut off our loose ends after spending the rest of the year peacefully.”

“Duty…duty you say…”

Fervin rubbed his chin languidly.

He seemed to be thinking carefully about something before spitting out in a muffled, low voice.

“Then, are you going to carry out that duty now?”

“What duty…”

He pursed his lips and hesitated for a moment.

You’re the one who’s speaking, so why are you making such a flustered expression?

“Our duty to have a child. After all, the elders in the house have been insisting for years already.”

“A child…you say?”

I tried to hide my embarrassment.

What are you talking about, you’re talking about our duty to bear children?

Of course, the most effective way for Princess Irwen who was from a defeated country to preserve her name would be to give birth to the Duke’s child, the heir to the Carlisle Duchy in order to solidify her position.

But I had no intention of doing that.

Because I couldn’t bear to sleep with someone I didn’t love.

So I had planned to quietly complete the rest of our marriage and divorce as planned, but what? Our duty to bear children?

This was not the Fervin I knew.

In the original story, Irwen and Fervin had both tacitly agreed not to have children.

He let out a dry laugh the moment I clenched my fists under the table.

“Actually, what could I have expected from the woman who said she didn’t want to taint her blood with the blood of the invaders on our first night?”

“…”

“Forget I said anything.”

Fervin got up.

As I tried to follow him and get up too, he waved his hand as he looked at me.

“Don’t mind me, continue your meal.”

“I already stopped eating in the middle since I felt uncomfortable.”

“Just act like you usually do, Irwen. Don’t act like this and do what you’ve never done before.”

Fervin approached me from the front.

It seemed as if I couldn’t overcome my own temper, but when I looked into his eyes, I was embarrassed again.

I was angry, but now I was stammering again.

Why are you doing this?

He growled in a deep voice to me, whose mind was still in chaos.

“Don’t show up in front of me again. Don’t shake my heart.”

He hurriedly turned around and left.

The plate of food, which was not even half eaten, was still steaming.

I sat down and thought as I ate the chicken.

You seem to hate me quite a bit, don’t you?

What the hell did Irwen do to you before to become such an object of hatred?

“Madam, don’t worry too much. The master must have also clearly felt the changes in madam’s appearance.”

Mrs Tilly, who brought me a clean towel, spoke as if she was comforting me.

After I woke up, she had supported me with her warm words and trustworthy demeanour, so I complained to her in a coquettish voice.

“Of course, I know what he’s been through so far is too much. But still, shouldn’t he at least give me a chance? I’ve already put in this much effort, but in the end, all he did was just get angry.”

“Don’t be agitated, the master has already noticed the changes in madam’s personality.”

“…really?”

Mrs Tilly nodded in response to my question.

“He’s just tired of the several years of waiting and patience he’s gone through so it’s hard for him to accept this as the truth.”

[ / / / ]

The next day.

I had tea with Mrs Tilly in the garden which was full of flowers.

“I wish I had spent my time like this earlier, Mrs Tilly.”

“I just wanted to thank you since you take care of me so well, even when you’re busy.”

“Not at all, in fact, I should be more grateful. You were the one who even nursed me when I was sick, taught me about a lot of things, and supported me even when I couldn’t remember everything. Seriously, thank you so much.”

I faced Mrs Tilly whilst enjoying my favourite hot chocolate.

Mrs Tilly smiled meaningfully, her eyes full of the years of wisdom she had lived through.

She had not even touched the luxurious early grey tea that was in front of her.

Although she seemed somewhat wary of me, her gaze toward me was still filled with curiosity.

She was a friendly-looking middle aged woman with gray hair that was sparsely scattered throughout.

She was the second generation of her family to serve the former Duchess, and continued to serve as a housekeeper in the Carlisle Dukedom.

She had come here when she was young, and was now a gentle woman with traces of the years she had experienced etched onto her face.

After having tea time and asking about this and that, the subject flowed on to the cultural festival which would be held next week.

“Ah, you mean the cultural festival that the Marchioness Celestine is holding next week. Wasn’t it originally my turn to hold it?”

“Yes, it was, but madam refused it every year, so the Marchioness Celestine took over instead. It will probably be the same again this year.”

The cultural festival was a kind of party that was organised by the aristocratic wives to show off how cultured they were.

Although it is said that it is a place of cultural exchange that gets rotated around to different people within a certain period of time, it was actually more so about who spent the most money in order show off the best performance.

Many nobles, who seemed to be overflowing with money, invited the best actors or singers to hold a grand feast in their mansion.

However, the performance that was more precious than a performance decorated by the best artists, was a performance that was decorated by the noble ladies themselves.

Although the noble ladies were usually quiet, they would still personally step out on stage and get together with other noble guests while helping their husband’s social standing rise.

Dance, drama, or singing were skills they had all been honing since they young, but fortunately, it was a field in which I was confident in.

No doubt many people would attend if the Duchess Carlisle, who had been inactive from social activities, would personally grace the stage.

I decided to take this opportunity to change my image.

From a princess of a foreign country who was reputed to be an evil woman to an intelligent woman who had already adapted to this place.

I looked directly at Mrs Tilly and declared.

“I’m going to host this cultural festival.”

“Sorry…?”

“I’m going to sing, so first, find the best band to accompany me.”

As a former idol trainee and aspiring singer, I had to show off my skills and show a perfect performance.

Mrs Tilly looked at me in disbelief and bravely opened her mouth.

“Surely we don’t also need to sing the chorus, right madam? If by any chance the key is too uncomfortable to sing, it might be better if we hired several people.”

“But I can still do it on my own. Would you like to hear it?”

In front of Mrs Tilly, who nodded, I tensed my stomach and sang.

I could see servants eavesdropping from the open windows throughout the mansion.

There was even the sound of a window opening on the second floor.

I had only sang a short verse, but Mrs Tilly’s face was full of joy.

“My word, you did really well! Have you perhaps been hiding your talent this whole time?”

“I mean, well…anyways, it was fine, right?”

“It’s not just fine, it was outstanding, madam! It would have been nice if the master could have listened to this with us as well. I can still call him from the study right now…”

“No, it would be better if he heard it on the day of the cultural festival, not now.”

I immediately got up and grabbed Mrs Tilly, who was about to enter the mansion.

I had no intention of singing a song in front of my prickly husband.

He wouldn’t even like it.

The moment I looked at the second floor of the mansion to no avail whilst drinking my tea.

Some sort of large body that was hidden behind the curtain.

The dazzling platinum hair that seemed to have flashed past.

ok but surely she doesn’t think it’s that easy for her to earn his trust ???? like, let’s be fair girlie, you’ve acted like an asshole for four years, and just with a few days, you expect him to act nice ??? bestie that’s like four years of betrayal and waiting the past irwen has put him through give mans a break !!!!!

in this case tho i do sympathise with fervin bc imagine the woman you literally LOVE HIS MF FIRST LOVE has been hating him, verbally abusing him, and has probably pulled one of these i’m going to pretend to love you but backstab you, for FOUR MF YEARS LIKE AHHHH also that one comment she made abt not wanting to mix blood with the invaders like OUCH that must’ve hurt him so bad but i’m looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops!

RMHM Ch 5 — A Crazy Woman and Handsome Crying Man

A cemetery full of silence and chaos.

The name that I had hoped for someone to call this body throughout the entire funeral had come out of the mouth of a man I had never even seen before.

I stiffened when I saw the man turn his head toward me.

It was a soaked face that was distorted and messed up enough for me to feel sorry for him.

Swollen eyelids that were sunk in, his deep red eyes glowed strangely under the light of the moon and gas light.

In an instant, the feeling of my heart pounding and free falling as well as goosebumps breaking out suddenly rushed through me.

It wasn’t just because of those unfamiliar red eyes.

Like a wild animal that was deprived of its prey, a beast who was robbed of its cub, the contorted face of the man made me confused.

The man who had cried so much that his entire face had been distorted shouldn’t have been a man that I had seen for the first time, but Novian.

The one who should’ve called my name should have been my husband, not a stranger.

As expected, the person I should face right now…

‘I should go and meat Novian first.’

Although I didn’t even know who this was, I couldn’t afford to meet anyone else who knew my face.

It was like an animal’s instinct.

“Adrienne…!”

A cemetery full of silence and chaos.

‘I should go and meat Novian first.’

Although I didn’t even know who this was, I couldn’t afford to meet anyone else who knew my face.

It was like an animal’s instinct.

“Adrienne…!”

The man stopped moving, as if he was frozen, then suddenly got up.

At the same time, his broad shoulders shook greatly.

Looking at him in a slightly brighter place, he looked like a person whose body was suffering from serious injuries.

The front part of his jacket which was full of badges and medals of honour had been stained red by the blood.

The man staggered, blocking his injury with his large hand.

I managed to move my stiff body and ran back the way I came, as if this was my last chance.

Fortunately or unfortunately, my newly acquired body of Blair was so healthy that I was able to run with ease.

“Adrienne, Adrienne…!”

A pathetic voice that I never would have thought to have heard unless someone knew me immediately pierced the back of my head.

I ran desperately like a madman.

After that, I no longer remembered how I got out of that place.

Perhaps the voice that was calling me was the voice of that stranger with red eyes, or the guard who was standing at the entrance.

Panting and grabbing at my thundering heart, I got into the Count’s carriage which was waiting for me on the side of the road.

Ignoring the bewilderment of the coachman’s shouting, I frantically knocked on the carriage door, as if I was crazy.

The coachman who had hesitated yelled out a ‘Giddy up!’ before immediately setting out with the carriage.

Outside the window of the fast carriage, the dimly lit lights flashed past.

Once the lights that illuminated the darkness outside started to form a line and my rough breathing had calmed down.

“Huh?”

I double checked my feet that were somehow bare.

My torn white silk stockings were a mess of dirt and grass, with my two toes sticking out of it.

The black shoes I had been wearing to match my clothes had simultaneously come off while I was running.

“Ha…”

I curled up, resting my elbows on my knees and wrapping my hands that were still trembling around my head.

I vaguely remembered nearly falling over and maintaining my balance with much difficulty whilst I was running.

At that time, it seems as if the heel of my shoe had sunk slightly into a small pile of mud.

The eyes of the man I had met in front of my tombstone were half round.

Sort of like a lunatic.

So I had desperately run away.

The red eyes that had gleamed under the moonlight were definitely like that of a lunatic.

He had tried to catch up to me whilst blocking the blood that was flowing out from his injury, staggering as if he was about to fall right then and there.

I let out a deep breath, brushing aside the small pebbles from my feet that had become muddy.

“Just who…the hell are you…”

I looked back again over the situation that I had not been able to reflect on due to my desperate fleeing.

At the same time, I grabbed my suddenly aching head, and tried to recall the man’s face in more detail.

Who could that man be?

After my debutante, I had only attended two parties.

The man who appeared in the empty graveyard was a handsome man who had flashed past like the sun on a winter night, beautiful enough to even for a moment, enrapture one in enlightenment.

Even though there was no way I wouldn’t have remembered a man that was that good looking, I still had no clue who he was.

[ / / / ]

Even after I had arrived, I remained sitting in the carriage for a long time, lost in thought before finally coming to my senses after much difficulty and entered the Count’s mansion.

“Madam! You’ve come back?”

“Madam, your feet…!”

Marge and Yona who were worried about me, who had set out without the accompaniment of a single servant, quickly followed to catch up to me.

I took off my hat before laying myself on the sofa in the living room, as if I was collapsing.

Both my body and heart were tired and confused.

Situations that were too daunting to handle in one day seemed to burst open in my head.

My death.

A newly acquired body.

The people who had said that I was my husband’s mistress.

My funeral.

And a man who I didn’t even know, sobbing in front of my tombstone.

Taking off the solemn black hat that was worn at funerals, Yona rubbed my legs diligently, and carefully removed the torn stockings before washing my feet.

The water that was brought in to wash my hands quickly turned into water used for a foot bath.

My feet started to sting in pain as soon as the hot water touched my wound.

Marge who was at her wit’s end, stood in front of me frantically, knowing exactly what had occurred for me to end up like this once she had seen my condition.

“D-Did you end up trying to meet the Grand Duke, madam?”

Ah.

Right, Novian.

When I heard his name, I came back to reality as I was reminded of something I had forgotten whilst running away.

I wasn’t able to wait for Novian until the end due to the sudden appearance of the man who had the roguish beauty of a beast.

Upon realising that fact, an unfamiliar apprehension surged over me.

The twisted face of the man I had seen for the first time today, which was all I could think of, was quickly erased from my mind in an instant.

‘What…am I supposed to do now?’

Then I remembered Novian’s face at the funeral.

Until the last moment I had seen Novian, he had quietly endured the first day of my funeral without even sparing me a single glance.

“Madam?”

“…”

I nodded quietly without answering.

Because I had seen Novian.

After examining my face again, Marge looked at me with tears in her eyes, and for a moment, lost her words and stopped her clutter.

“And the corpse of the Grand Duchess?”

“…Mm.”

I barely answered in a hoarse voice.

I saw it.

I saw it clearly.

I, who was decorated even more beautifully than the days when I was staying in bed as a sick person in the Grand Duke’s estate.

The reality was that now, even the body to return to was gone.

Novian would have to display my corpse and welcome the guests who came to pay their respects, like an owner who brings out their precious antiques whenever an important guest was coming.

It was ridiculous.

Novian, had found it hard to even stay for more than two days in the capital and was treated like a dog by the imperial family during our last two years of marriage.

Now he inevitably had to stay in the capital for 100 days without leaving.

Only after I died.

That was also one of the duties of the imperial family.

“…I thought you would swoon in joy because you liked it, so how come you’re crying instead?”

I just kept crying.

Even though Marge had spoke harshly, she still handed me a handkerchief.

I buried my face in the handkerchief and swallowed my tears quietly on the sofa.

‘You are still young.’

The voice of Novian, who had always hugged and comforted me, buzzed in my head.

That’s right, I was still young and ignorant, even this morning, when I had instantly become happy with the healthy body that I was given.

Because it was the body that I had been wishing for my whole life.

It was so shameful.

My body was healthy.

But on the other hand, I had lost everything else.

My husband was no longer the beautiful Novian, and my name was no longer Adrienne Trovica nor Adrienne Piretta.

How great would it have been if this situation had been something straight out of a fairytale or a novel?

Then I wouldn’t have been the wife of Count Acacia.

As soon as our eyes met, as if it were fated, Novian would have immediately known that Adrienne had possessed this body.

Then, I would have run up to Novian and kissed him, ecstatic that I had shaken off my weak and sickly body and had been reborn.

As I screamed happily that God had finally granted my wish.

However, I clearly remembered the gazes of some of the ladies and young women who were expressing their condolences at the funeral and the looks they had thrown toward Novian.

They had all looked healthy and beautiful.

That wasn’t a scene from a fairytale. It was the reality I had to live with.

If my soul had actually left this world, I would have smiled vaguely whilst watching his figure from heaven and said, ‘Find happiness without me, Noah’, but when I had seen his state in front of me, my stomach had been turned inside out.

‘Ha—. How ridiculous.’

Contrary to the burning emotions, amazing laughter continued to burst forth with my tears.

I was dead and had even entered someone else’s body.

It couldn’t get worse than that.

Marge, who was restless as she watched me sob continuously with my face buried in her handkerchief, finally took a deep breath before sending Yona out to ask for a cup of soothing tea.

‘It was the first time Noah had cried.’

It was a huge shock to me, who had never even once seen him look so weak.

I wanted to hit myself hard on the head, me, who had even doubted him for a moment.

‘How could I have been so stupid?’

The person who would be having the most difficult time would have been Novian, who was still struggling with a sense of loss after losing me, and would have to greet the guests who came to express their condolences with my corpse by his side.

My shallow suspicions of Novian, who had sent someone to invite a vassal’s wife to the funeral, had been swept away without a trace.

An expression that could not have appeared if he didn’t love me. I had seen it clearly with my own two eyes

“Madam! Madam!”

And then my emotions, which had been engulfed in sadness, changed in an instant due to one mysterious card.

“Madam, this thing was left at the front of the house!”

That’s right, Yona, who had gone to prepare chamomile tea, had run in, panting, once she had seen the handwriting on the card and brought it in.

[ Keep your promise, B. ]

The handwriting of the person who calls for B, which was clearly the initials for Blair, and asks for her to keep her promise…

…was clearly the exact same handwriting as that of my husband, Novian.

IWBMTL Ch 206

“W-What sort of bullshit are you spouting?! Assassinating the Emperor…you’re saying I committed treason?!”

Astana couldn’t bring himself to say his own crime and turned a ghastly white.

He struggled until his cloth-bound ankles were all peeled and red, until the bandage on his severed right arm which was tied by the palace unraveled.

No one could beat his dirty temper.

But Perez’s face whilst looking down at Astana’s figure, remained expressionless.

“Do you perhaps want to claim that you don’t remember anything now?”

Perez asked in a dry tone.

“Don’t be ridiculous! Why would I ever try to kill His Majesty…”

Astana murmured, still looking confused.

The next moment, he raised his eyes and shouted at Perez.

“Wait, is that why I’m tied up here right now? Because I tried to assassinate the Emperor?

“That’s right.”

“Ha! Then that’s fine! Ha ha!”

Astana burst into a fit of laughter.

His sweaty and matted hair, disheveled clothes, and bloodshot eyes made his deranged smile seem as if it belonged to an insane madman.

“There must have been a misunderstanding! The one I was trying to kill wasn’t His Majesty but rather, it was you! So let this go, now!”

“There must have been a misunderstanding! The one I was trying to kill wasn’t the Emperor but rather, it was you! So let this go, now!”

The faces of the knights became ambiguous.

How were they meant to explain it?

At the same time, they looked toward Perez.

Perez snorted and stared at Astana before replying.

“The one you rushed toward to kill wasn’t me, rather it was the Emperor instead.”

Perez said whilst he opened a sturdy chest.

“You used this dagger that Bellesac Lombardy had, didn’t you?”

Astana’s gaze arrived at the sharp dagger.

Fine, he remembered holding that dagger in his hand.

However.

“What a load of bullshit. It was clearly aimed at you, you lowly thing. I didn’t succeed because of the imperial knights that were next to you, but…”

Astana’s voice gradually faded away into silence.

His pupils trembled as if there was an earthquake.

With eyes that gradually showed his genuine horror, Astana checked the expressions of the knights with a nervous expression.

“N-No way…”

Eventually, a sound that seemed to be half a breath came out of Astana’s mouth.

“D-Did I really?”

Astana asked Lord Sloan.

Lord Sloan looked at Perez with a glum face, as if to get permission from him, before he replied to Astana.

“In Madman’s Forest, Your Highness, the First Prince attacked His Majesty the Emperor, not His Highness the Second Prince.”

“B-But he was clearly wearing the red armour, and that bitch from Lombardy was next to him…”

“Watch your words, Astana.”

Perez had already picked up Bellesac’s dagger and pointed it at Astana’s neck before speaking lowly.

It was not just a threat.

The exceptionally sharp tip of the dagger was already pressed against Astana’s Adam’s apple.

With just a little more force, it’d cut through his flesh and stab into him.

“U-Understood.”

Astana answered quickly.

“As I was saying, the young lady from Lombardy was also clearly next to him, I mean.”

“Florentia was taking care of His Majesty and looking around in the woods.”

Perez continued to speak without lowering the dagger.

“Therefore, you are a sinner who attempted to commit treason, Astana.”

“Treason you say?! Why would I? Even if I stay still and do nothing, I’m still a prince who will succeed His Majesty as the emperor in the future! Why would I commit treason?”

“Hard to say. That’s what I’ll need to figure out in the future.”

Perez flipped the dagger in his hand and thrust it in front of Astana’s eyes.

“Astana Nerempe Durelli. You attempted to assassinate His Majesty the Emperor with this dagger in Madman’s Forest. Furthermore.”

At Perez’s order, the knight held out a canteen made of black leather.

“The investigation revealed that this canteen contained a drug.”

“…a drug?”

“It’s a drug that absorbs magic at a rapid rate, causing visual hallucinations, auditory hallucinations, and so on.”

“Y-Yes, that’s right!”

Astana immediately jumped up from his spot and shouted.

“That’s right, clearly someone must have given me a drug! Otherwise, I couldn’t have mistaken His Majesty for you…”

“Are you saying that you didn’t choose to take this drug on your own?”

Lord Sloan asked Astana.

Magic boosts the human power by leaps and bounds.

That’s why Astana had the strength and stamina to push himself to his limits during those few days.

“Am I crazy enough to want to deliberately absorb magic?!”

“Then this is a very important piece of information”

Then, Lord Sloan asked Astana with an extremely solemn face.

“Is there anyone else who had access to this canteen?”

“How am I supposed to know that? That canteen wasn’t even mine in the first place!”

“It didn’t belong to Your Highness? Then why did you continue carrying this canteen in your possession?”

“That’s because Bellesac…Bellesac…”

Astana’s voice gradually became quieter again.

At that moment, Astana’s gaze turned to Perez.

“That canteen…”

“When I ran into the Second Prince’s group in the forest, I swiped one of the canteens they had drunk while they were talking about magic.”

Astana couldn’t find it in himself to speak.

“You, you…”

He felt goosebumps rise all over his body.

When he came to his senses, only then did he realise that he was already in the beast’s mouth.

At that moment, Perez, who was standing at the back, said.

“Tell me, Astana.”

His voice was as monotonous as before, but to Astana it seemed exactly as if he was laughing.

“For it is His Majesty’s command to find all those who were involved, including you.”

Perez’s red eyes were smiling.

Rulac breathed out a long sigh as he sat within a carriage that was entering the Lombardy mansion, watching the view outside the carriage’s window.

All of a sudden, he felt increasingly fatigued.

“Seems like I’ve grown older too.”

Rulac smiled in vain.

It had already been a long time since he found the work of the Patriarch overwhelming.

However, he had still held on until now.

It was because Doctor Estira, the Lombardy’s family doctor, was extremely skilled, and Rulac himself had lived in her care ever since he had collapsed a few years ago.

But now, he felt as if he was at his limit.

‘Hmm.’

Rulac sighed once again, rubbing his face.

“Patriarch, we’ve arrived at the mansion.”

The coachman’s voice was heard from outside.

“You’ve done well.”

Rulac said as he tried to hide his fatigue as much as he could.

Then the carriage door opened.

Rulac, who had just thought it was the coachman, widened his eyes.

“Grandfather, you’re back!”

“Tia…”

Although she had now become an adult, his granddaughter, who was smiling widely, still acted like a child.

“You must have been tired from the long trip, right? Let’s have a nice dinner together, Grandfather!”

“Were you waiting for outside just for this grandfather? It’s cold today though…”

Rulac asked anxiously when he saw his granddaughter’s nose that had turned red due to the cold.

“It hasn’t been long since I came out! My dad is also waiting for you at the restaurant. Grandfather, come with me!”

Tia said, walking arm in arm with Rulac affectionately.

“Gallahan as well…alright, alright.”

Rulac patted Tia’s hand.

Although this hand still felt small and tender, this hand couldn’t be more reliable.

The affectionate grandfather and granddaughter walked up the steps of the entrance, one by one whilst talking.

“The Brown household’s reinstatement is going to be discussed properly at the noble meeting.”

“Really? The Patriarch of the Brown family and Lady Ramona would like that a lot.”

Rulac looked at his granddaughter when he heard Tia’s words.

“What are you going to do, Tia? It was you who showed them to the world.”

“That’s…”

Tia smiled, crinkling her eyes finely.

It was a smile that resembled her father, Gallahan.

“Of course it’s good. It was a task that Grandfather had assigned to me.”

What a smart and resolute child.

Rulac patted Tia on the head.

“When did you grow up to be this big?”

His granddaughter had suddenly grown up to be such a strong support for the family.

He had been supportive of her becoming his successor.

The Durelli Family, which was already overflowing with blood, was different to the Lombardy household.

Lombardy had a promising younger generation that was ready to emerge.

‘Tia is still young, so I’ll teach her everything one by one. Then, after a few years…’

It happened when Rulac was having these sort of thoughts.

Stagger.

Rulac’s body collapsed and fell down.

It was the exact same situation as when the still-young Tia had hugged Rulac in order to cushion his fall and rolled down the stairs.

Rulac already knew what to do in this sort of situation.

Wouldn’t he injure her as badly as last time if the same thing happened twice?

Instinctively leaning to the opposite side of Tia, Rulac collapsed on the stairs.

“Grandfather!”

He heard Tia’s shocked voice.

He could feel his granddaughter clutching his shoulder, as if she was still trying to protect Rulac somehow.

In his gradually fading consciousness, Rulac patted the back of his granddaughter’s, just like he did a while ago.

‘Don’t be too surprised. I’m fine.’

However, failing to say all that, Rulac eventually lost his consciousness on the steps in front of the entrance.

[ / / / ]

“Estira, what’s going on?”

My voice was so cold that it was unfamiliar.

As Grandfather was safely taken to the bedroom, Estira immediately ran over right away.

“He’ll regain consciousness in no time. He’ll be alright.”

“How bad is Grandfather’s condition? If you had told me earlier…”

I would have been more careful.

I wouldn’t have let you go all alone on such a long journey to the palace.

Various thoughts were rushing through my mind.

“Don’t scold Doctor Estira too much. I was the one who told her not to tell anyone.”

My grandfather was slowly lifting himself up.

“Grandfather.”

My grandfather smiled as I approached him.

“In the end, isn’t this all because of my old age? No matter how effective the medicine is, it still can’t fool time.”

What grandfather said was correct.

In my previous life, my grandfather was already gradually struggling to move and always needed someone’s help to walk.

Unlike right now, he wouldn’t even have been able to imagine being able to get up from the bed himself or visiting the palace freely by himself.

I apologized to Estira.

“I’m sorry, Estira. I spoke out of turn there.”

“It’s fine. Miss Florentia was also very shocked.”

Estira gave me a warm smile as she handed the medicine to my grandfather.

“I think it’s because I was very fatigued today. Should I take my medicine more often?”

“I’d advise you to rest properly for a few days and observe your progress, Patriarch.”

“Hmm. I see.”

Grandfather shook his head as if he knew it would be so.

“This has become extremely troubling.”

“There’s nothing to worry about. You have to rest completely, Grandfather.”

My grandfather burst into laughter at my words.

“But shouldn’t someone go to the noble meeting and preside over the Brown family’s reinstatement?”

“Don’t worry about that. Perez already knows about that and will take care of it…”

“Alright, Tia, it’ll be find if you go.”

“What…?”

I doubted my ears for a moment.

I tried to scratch my ear with my little finger since I thought I had heard wrong as my grandfather smiled and said to me.

“Tia, you go to the noble meeting instead of me.”

“But, Grandfather. That’s…”

“That’s right, it’s something only an acting head can do.”

I nearly forgot to breathe as I looked at my grandfather.

Grandfather smiled kindly and said again, as if to confirm with me.

“You’ll attend the noble meeting as Lombardy’s Acting Patriarch, Tia.”

damn they rlly all fell into perez’s perfect trap huh. the moment astana realises this is so satisfying.

IBOMLEW Ch 1 — Becoming the Obsessive Male Lead’s Ex-Wife (II)

After a few days of feeling faint, I barely managed to wake up.

I got up as the dazzling sunlight came in, one hand clasping my messy hair.

This time as well, I was in the same bedroom again, but instead of that man, there were people who appeared to be servants surrounding me.

With their help, I was examined by Doctor Doppari and was diagnosed with, ‘there is nothing wrong with Duchess Carlisle’s body’.

The people next to me breathed a sigh of relief and examined my body once again, but did not approach me recklessly anymore.

They bowed their heads when I looked at them, as if they wouldn’t know what to do if they met my eyes.

“Have you already sent word to the Imperial Palace? When is the master coming?”

“He is on his way right now.”

As I listened to the echo of their voices surrounding me, I tried to organise my thoughts several times.

The man I saw before I fainted earlier called me ‘Irwen’, and the doctor called me ‘Duchess Carlisle’.

No matter which way I looked at it, it became apparent that this wasn’t a dream, nor reality, but a situation within a novel.

I could’ve never imagined this situation.

I, who was just a trainee and struggling hard to become a singer, would suddenly become a character in a story.

The body I possessed was the body of ‘Irwen Lillias’, a villainous wife who appeared at the beginning of a popular romance fantasy novel, ‘Fervin and Stella’, and disappeared when she died.

As a princess of a defeated country, she was the sacrifice that was offered to the Theresia Empire’s imperial family.

After the five year war with the Theresia Empire, the defeated Verma Duchy sent the illegitimate and only daughter of the Grand Duke Verma as a peace offering to the Theresia Empire.

Grand Duke Verma’s surname, ‘Lillias’, and her age, was also only given to her a few years ago, thanks to the push of her half brother who had found her.

However, since she was the only daughter who had the blood of Grand Duke Verma, the Imperial Family of Theresia accepted her as a reconciliation gift and married her to Duke Carlisle.

Fervin Carlisle, a ruthless desperado who pushed the Verma Duchy to the brink of destruction, the Emperor’s right hand man and an influential figure of the empire.

As the marriage between Duke Carlisle and Irwen was pushed forward strongly, everything ended up progressing extremely fast.

In the novel, it is briefly stated that Irwen hated Fervin almost as much as he hated her.

However, in the sense of reconciliation with the Verma Duchy, the couple had to remain married for at least five years.

Their marriage, which had been creaking from the beginning of their marriage, creaked on for four more years.

Of course, news of the extremely valued successor had not been heard, and rumours quickly spread of Irwen who was not fulfilling the minimal duties of a duchess.

It was common for Irwen to lash out at the servants of the household, not make an appearance at any social gatherings, and even send the finest specialties of the Carlisle estate back to the Verma Duchy illegally.

Then one day, when not much of their married life remained.

Duke Carlisle, the Emperor’s right hand who was called the Conqueror, suddenly collapsed while drinking wine in his bedroom.

Then the Duchess, Irwen, was named as the mastermind behind the plot.

Although she protested the injustice, she was still ultimately arrested as the prime suspect soon after that.

The fact that she had illegally robbed the Carlisle estates, offered goods to the Verma Duchy and always slandered her husband, made her into a prime suspect.

The Empire concluded that she had colluded with the Verma Duchy to kill Duke Carlisle and steal his properties.

It was only a matter of time before Irwen Lillias was executed for trying to kill Fervin Carlisle, a relative of the Imperial Family and hero of the Theresia Empire.

Naturally, no one believed her words, as she trembled with injustice.

Even her husband, Duke Carlisle, whom she had a relationship with due to her contractual marriage.

In the end, Irwen was ruined and met her death, while Fervin Carlisle remarried the esteemed daughter of the Count, Stella Bell, who devoted herself and cared for him with the utmost care.

Why did I have to possess Irwen’s body, I resented and resented this fact countless times.

The body of such a foolish evildoer, and even one that was destined to die!

However, since I entered Irwen’s body, I vowed not to live like this.

According to the servants, we had already been married for four years.

So, first off, my goal is to live quietly for the remaining year, divorce, then receive a villa as the alimony payment.

Alright, I’ll just remain as Duke Carlisle’s ex-wife in order to preserve my life.

After taking the first step, the next plan was swiftly made..

My top priority was to urgently figure out the current situation I was in as ‘Irwen’, and make a plan to ensure that I survive.

After much thought, I came to one conclusion.

First, I had to start accumulating virtue, kindness and benevolence and change the gazes of fear of those around me.

At that moment, the sound of the door opening was heard, and a man entered.

Everyone bowed their heads except for me, who was still staring at him.

“Duke.”

“How are you feeling?”

The man came up to me and met my surprised gaze.

A man whose coat was worn in such a hurry that he hadn’t even buttoned it all up yet, and hair that was blowing wildly in the wind.

Dazzling platinum blonde hair, a tall stature, slender body and alluring green eyes.

It was clear that this was Irwen’s husband, and now my husband, Duke Fervin Carlisle.

When I first opened my eyes, was this the man who stayed by my side on the side of the bed?

Still looking at him, I saw Fervin’s face stiffening.

It was evident that he felt uncomfortable with the eye contact we were making.

It was then that I remembered Irwen’s perilous position in the novel.

Wasn’t I a character who eventually died after being suspected of being behind the poisoning case due to my bad relationship with my husband?

I had just barely survived, I didn’t possibly want to die again.

I didn’t want to experience such a horrible feeling again.

So first, it’s important for me to build the notoriety and reputation of ‘a woman who can’t possibly kill her husband’.

As if he could see my calculative thoughts, Fervin averted his eyes, seemingly uncomfortable with my staring.

“Since you seem fine now, I should probably go.”

“Um…”

Without realising it, I grabbed his sleeve and pulled him closer.

The surrounding silent gazes that seemed as if they were watching a horror movie, and Fervin’s cold gaze, as if asking me, ‘What’s wrong with you?’.

Where did the face that had appeared earlier when you opened the door to come in go?

Now all I could see were cold eyes that were facing me, as if I was the enemy.

My heart pounded from his frosty gaze.

“What?”

To him, who had barely responded with a concise reply in his low voice, I opened my mouth with a sense of ‘oh, who cares’.

I had to try and live.

“Thank you, for coming here to see me.”

I gathered my courage and spit out the following words, hearing several people around me fall down in surprise.

The servants started saying things like, ‘How could madam say such a thing…’, and ‘Oh my god, I never would’ve thought to hear such a sentence come out from madam’s lips…’.

Fervin was no exception, as he stood frozen on the spot with an absurd expression on his face.

He looked at me with bewildered eyes, as if I was crazy, his eyes trembling violently.

He opened his mouth slightly, as if to say something, but then closed them.

He then turned around and left the room in a hurry.

[ / / / ]

Fervin arrived at the study and rubbed his face with both hands.

He never imagined that after she fell, he would sneak up to see her at night and whisper to her countless times, hoping for her to wake up.

Even if people change, her change had simply been too big.

He immediately asked Mrs Tilly, who had followed him into the study.

“Did she lose her memory?”

“The doctor said it was too early to make a decision yet, but she is definitely acting as if she was someone else right now. The fact that her personality has changed and become more positive is evidence of that.”

“Why would you change now?”

Fervin bit his lip nervously.

He asked Mrs Tilly, the maid who took care of Irwen from the moment she had collapsed until she woke up, about her condition again.

He wasn’t the only one who was wondering about the Duchess’ changed personality.

Everyone else in the mansion did as well.

Irwen, who always seemed to be shrouded in an angry aura, as if she had a thorn in her body, suddenly became kind, so it was only to be expected.

Besides, she, who had never even dealt with her husband directly before, saw Duke Carlisle and even said ‘Thank you, for coming here to see me’.

Seeing her master lingering around the window, as if he was anxious, Mrs Tilly made a cautious suggestion.

“Maybe madam has finally thought it through and decided to repent? You know the saying, when a person gets sick, they become a different person. In the meantime, she may have grown tired of her resentful and prickly life and may be trying to restore her relationship with you, master.”

“Don’t give me any false hope.”

The light of the sunset coming through the window dyed Fervin’s beautiful face a hue of red.

Thanks to this, he was able to conceal his pounding heart that had caused the blood to involuntarily rush up and stain his face red.

He had fallen in love with her, proposed to her, and started off his married life with a determined mindset, but in the end his heart had hardened due to her coldness.

He thought it had already been frozen solid for four years, and had promised himself that he wouldn’t allow himself to get hurt anymore.

However, it seemed as if a single crack had appeared in his frozen heart.

The heart that had betrayed his rational reasoning and started to beat again.

From the time Irwen had stared blankly at him with those big blue eyes.

Although he had been flustered and wanted to push her away in a panic, it couldn’t be blocked.

As if a chaotic heart had suddenly taken over his whole body, he muttered involuntarily.

“…I’m going crazy.”

[ / / / ]

The next few days were peaceful, but busy.

Although I was resting, I still learned various things about the mansion from Mrs Tilly, the housekeeper, and tried to make a friendly impression with the servants by acquainting myself with them and calling them by their names.

Of course initially, they had been repeatedly surprised and shocked by my changed appearance, but they didn’t shun me like the first time.

I wanted to show Fervin a different side of me too, but didn’t get a chance to these days.

Then, in the evening, after Duke Carlisle had been swarmed by people for a long time.

The kitchen was busily preparing as Duke Carlisle, who usually ate outside with the exception of breakfast, had said he would eat at home today.

It was said that in order to become friends, one must share a meal together, so I decided to have dinner with him.

“Madam.”

A young maid came in with a basket full of freshly picked flowers.

The first day I entered Irwen’s body, I, who had memorised the names of all the maids, stared at her.

So this was the head maid, Mrs Tilly’s niece, Marianne.

As I smiled at her, Marianne avoided my eyes anxiously and hurriedly said what she had to say.

“Dinner is ready to be served. Since the master is here today, dinner will be served in here, as usual.”

“No. Tell them that we’ll eat together.”

“Yes…yes?!”

“What, is it strange for us to eat together?”

“No, that’s not what I meant, but…just that it’s been a long time since the two of you have eaten together. No, actually, it might even be the first time.”

Marianne wrung her hands nervously without realising it.

Although I was worried as well, I got up from my seat and prepared to get dressed first.

I was rummaging through the clothes in my closet as my hand caught on a bright red dress.

Since it was our first dinner together, I concluded that there was nothing wrong with leaving a good impression on him.

I looked at Marianne whilst holding a red V-neck dress.

She was still staring at me blankly.

“Can you help me get dressed?”

“Ah…yes!”

With Marianne’s help, I put on the dress and observed her expressions.

Ever since I had opened my eyes in this place, I had already seen quite a few shocked expressions afterwards, but Marianne had a very confusing expression on her face.

I asked her as gently as possible.

“By any chance, are you afraid of me?”

“No…I’m not. It’s not that, just that madam normally wears a black dress, but today, you chose a different colour…by any chance, madam, if you don’t like us, please don’t express it through your clothes and just tell us directly.”

I took a deep breath as I watched Marianne speak out bravely in the midst of confused expressions.

No matter how many times I said so, the servants were still terrified of my changed appearance.

In the future, I would have no choice but to prove my changes with my actions.

Finally, it was time for me to put on makeup, as I sat down facing the dressing table and let my long black hair hang loose.

Marianne carefully applied the powder.

However, once, twice, three times…it was strange for her to pat so much powder on my face, to the point of applying it ten times.

Furthermore, my eyebrows were reapplied thickly with the charcoal soot ten times as well.

And she might as well have covered my lips with blood instead.

“Why are you applying it until I’m so white?”

“Madam normally wears her makeup like this.”

“And the eyebrows too, I mean, the charcoal soot. I think it’s too dark.”

“This is how you always did it though…”

Marianne’s voice began to tremble, as if she thought I was testing her.

I was horrified with Irwen’s ghastly makeup tastes, which were never described in the novel.

I would rather not wear any makeup at all.

In the end, I removed all my makeup with water mixed with flour.

Meanwhile, Marianne brought the flowers from the basket and held them out to me.

“Madam, please choose flowers for your hair.”

“…flowers?”

I slowly examined the flowers.

These were the many flowers that had bloomed in the garden.

I hesitated for a moment due to the sheer volume of flowers that were all displaying their beauty.

Marianne looked at me and picked up a bright red rose.

“How about I put in a rose?”

“Hmm…that’s good too, but…oh! It’s my favourite flower.”

A lily of the valley placed in the corner caught my eye.

lily of the valley

Lily of the valley, which had a subtle fragrance that suited my tastes exactly, was my favourite flower, ever since I was a child.

Marianne picked up a bunch of lily of the valleys and put them in my hair that was tied half up half down in a ponytail.

My reflection in the mirror seemed to be alright.

At least a bare face was better than that sort of makeup level.

I grabbed the hem of my long dress and went down to the drawing room.

I could hear Marianne muttering strangely about my bare face next to me.

“Should I send word for the master to make sure he properly prepares his heart, or not…”
